Overview

Limeuil House Rental Photos and Description

Bedroom, sitting room, kitchen/dining room, shower room, garden, sleeps two

A 16th century traditional stone house providing total peace and calm, high up above the Dordogne river in the extraordinary medieval village of Limeuil, one of the 'Plus Beaux Villages de France'. The house has immense character, and is very comfortably furnished and equipped for all your needs - all you need bring with you is your toothbrush! This is the ideal holiday home for two (the spacious beamed bedroom can be arranged either as a King size double or twin beds). The private garden is perfect for outdoor summer living - with sun, shade, and views to the Dordogne river valley. This historic house was originally the local Court House - the arms of the Kings of France are carved into the Renaissance fireplace, and the cellar was used as the village prison!

The village and region: Limeuil is a virtually unchanged medieval walled village, without any through traffic. It rises above the Dordogne river, and is within easy driving distance of Sarlat, Bergerac, the caves at Les Eyzies and Lascaux, the Chateaux of Beynac and Castelnaud, Domme, Belves and all the other picturesque and historic sites of the region. Fresh produce markets, a notable feature of this area, abound in every village and town.

Additional benefits: We will be pleased to reserve you a table for supper on your first night at the local restaurant, a stroll away from the house.

A full range of quality linen and towels, including all bed linen, bath and hand towels, kitchen tea towels, towel and napkins, is also available for £25 per week.

Free internet wi-fi is available in the house, and an ipod dock. Complimentary unlimited phone calls to all English speaking countries worldwide and all European countries is included (to landline phones only - not mobiles)

We can provide you with a route from Bergerac, Bordeaux or other local airports, or the Channel ports.

Un gite magnifique!

  • 5 of 5

Having stayed in many gites over the past 25 years this must rank as one of the best, if not the best. The gite itself was extremely comfortable and well equipped. It was very clean and maintained to the highest standard. The proximity to superb restaurants made it very special. The location was ideal for seeing the local area which is full of beautiful villages often with fantastic markets. We also visited a number of gardens locally. The fact that the house features on the Limeuil tourist trail only adds to its uniqueness. The owners, Belinda and Michael, were very welcoming without being obtrusive and the information they provided in the gite was absolutely wonderful and so useful. A truly exceptional gite!

La maison de la Justice - Just Great - Magnifique

  • 5 of 5

We spent 2 weeks in the Dordogne and stayed at this beautiful old property which has a great History just like the Dordogne and surrounding Regions. We enjoyed this house so much and it has everything in it that you need to enjoy a wonderful holiday. Its location was perfect in Limeuil and close to the many attractions and old Medieval Villages of the Dordogne. Such beautiful places of Sarlat, Beyenac, Domme, Monpazier, Rocamadour, La Roque, Padirac Caves are things that you should definitely visit along with the many Prehistoric places in the Les Eyzies. The Castles/Chateaus at Beyenac, Castelnaud, Commarque, Biron and Chateau des Milandes are also a must see, just amazing places. Each of the rooms are of a very good size and to be able to come home at the end of the day and sit on the small balcony outside sipping a fine Wine & Cheese was great. To be able to sit in the lounge which is big and relax was also a bonus. Limeuil being on the Dordogne and Vezere Rivers where they meet gives a real peaceful setting and one of relaxation. You can even go Canoeing on the rivers if you are so inclined which would give you another different view of the Dordogne. To have a Washing Machine available also was very handy. An option is a Laundromat in Le Buge as well not far from the Intermarche Supermarket. We really enjoyed our time at La Maison de la Justice and would highly recomment it to everyone. It was a pleasure to meet Michael and Belinda who are very pleasant and so helpful. Michael has prepared a File in which there is so much information about the House and also the many attractions and Villages that he recommends to visit and this does save you some time if you are wondering what and where to go. He also gives recommendations on Restaurants as well and we can highly recommend Julien's at Paunat, Cadoiun Abbey restaurant and if you want a nice Pizzeria try Tremolat which is only a few kms away. To Michael and Belinda, thank you so much for allowing us to share your beautiful old House and making our holiday in the Dordogne such a great experience. John & Claire Perth Australia

Owner's Response: Many thanks for taking the trouble to post such a comprehensive Review, John & Claire - and we are very pleased that you found the Old Courthouse such a good location for exploring the Dordogne region (and it's wines! Renewed thanks for the excellent bottle of Pécharmant that you left for us!)

Paradise in the Doydoyne

  • 5 of 5

We were so lucky to find such a beautiful house in the Dordoyne. It was like home from home, actually the photos on the website do not do the house justice! Kitchen fully equipped

A really nice retreat with quiet surroundings. Lovely wet room style shower and the most comfortable bed. Lovely outside space for relaxing in the garden.

Unfortunately we did not get to meet the owners but they were very helpful with all our questions!.

Highly recommended (and Im very hard to please!)

hope to return in the not so distant future

Perfect

  • 5 of 5

We stayed over the summer of 2010 and had a wonderful time. The village is beautiful and our best night was spent down by the river mingling with locals.

The house was excellently kept and the garden was shady and comfortable.

As school teachers, we were impressed that the rates didn't rise excessively over the summer holidays.

Thanks to the owners!

Michael and Katie.

Owner's Response: Thank you for commmenting on our pricing policy, Mike & Katie - with all six houses that we have available we only charge one price throughout the whole season, no nasty peaks at holiday times, which we think is very unfair!

Owner's Response: We were so delighted to see you raiding the markets for the deliciously fresh & incredibly tasty local farm produce - and even bringing your own copy of Stephanie Alexander's fab book of recipes of South-west France with you all the way from South Africa! Never seen the kitchen so well stocked!

A special place

  • 5 of 5

We spent a week at La maison de la Justice last year and thought it not long enough so we returned this year for two weeks. The little house is lovely and definitely only for two. It is beautifully decorated and very well equipt and an added bonus is the private garden for eating, sunbathing and generally relaxing. The information provided by Michael and Belinda is very good, whether giving backgrounfd information on the local wine or suggesting good, but not arduous, walks. Limeuil is beautiul with views at almost every turn. The jardin at the chateau is worth a visit, and only a few steps from the house and the view from l'Ancre de Salut over the confluence of the two rivers while enjoying a pre dinner kir is one of the best anywhere.

We like to have a bar and a restaurant near by and Limeuil ticks these boxes. The nearest shopping is in either Le Bugue, 6 Km (great market on Tuesdays) or Le Buisson, 3 Km. The best market is on Sundays in St Cyprien.

The many small towns in the area are worth exploring, particularly those along the Dordogne between Limeuil and Sarlat and the bastide towns of Monpazier, Belves and Domme where there is a particularly fine resturant, l'esplanade, with stunning views over the Dordogne, which is hard to beat. The trip along the Vezere valley is also lovely with stunning rock formations and many interesting caves with prehistoric paintings, or long histories of habitation. Although Lascaux 2 gets the star billing the Ruffingnac cave is particularly good and there are many others worth visiting. Don't be put off by the look of Les Eyzies. The prehistoric musem there is excellent. St Leon, further along the river, is a lovely village where it is possible to picnic on the banks of the Vezere. The nearby Chateau de Losse is beautiful.

We preferred to have dinner at the house, enjoying cooking the local produce and found that for lunch the Menu de Midi offered by many restaurants for 12 -15 euros is generally very good value. The house is relaxing and easy to manage and clean when leaving. We were attracted to it because it is only for two and is certainly different to any of the other many houses we have rented in France. Abeautiful house in a beautiful place.

The village of Limeuil is officially listed as 'Un des Plus Beaux Villages de France' - one of the most beautiful villages of France - a stone-built medieval fortified village clinging to the hillside which rises up from the spectacular confluence of the rivers Dordogne and Vézère. Still known as the 'Port', this great expanse of water presents one of the loveliest settings in the whole of the incredible Dordogne valley region. The village has three excellent restaurants - two of which are only a few minutes stroll from the house - a riverside bar, and a daily market stall. The village is ideally placed for easy access to all the historic attractions - including the prehistoric caves, medieval chateaux, the renaissance city of Sarlat, the bustling centres of Bergerac and Perigueux - and the golden-stoned villages and farms whose produce is sold at the numerous producer's markets that are such a feature of this region.
