Nestled on the edge of a redwood canyon, with a view of the ocean to the west and the mountains to the east, this romantic Big Sur hideaway welcomes you to retreat and renew your spirit in the beauty of Big Sur. The cabin is private and isolated, yet minutes from the highway, accessible by dirt road. There is a separate bath house with a view of the ocean from the tub. The cabin has a queen size bed and down comforter, a small refrigerator, gas burner and wood burning stove, with glass doors that open on the a deck that surrounds it. We are located 25 miles north of Cambria and 70 miles south of Carmel.
I really can't say enough good things about Peggy and Richard's cottage. We've been home for a few weeks now, and almost daily I think to myself "I miss our little cottage!". We arrived at dusk after a rather nerve wracking drive up the rough mountain road in our wimpy little rental car (heed Peggy's warning to have a car with decent pep and ground clearance - but if ours could make it, i'm confidant that just about anything could!) and were absolutely blown away the utter perfection that is this property! From the organically beautiful landscaping of succulents and lavender, to the deep claw footed tub in the bath house, the very comfortable bed, to the family of cats (mum, dad and kitten) and horse that kept us company - everything was was just idyllic. The best part was the feeling we had being here - it was almost like pressing re-set. We napped and read and hiked and were reminded as to what really matters in life. We will definitely be returning - and next time for longer. Oh! and make sure you go to Treebone for a meal - one of our favorite from the whole trip!
My husband and I celebrated our 28th Anniversary driving the coast and staying in various places along the way. This place was by far our favorite. Only regret is that we only stayed 3 nights. The property was secluded, quit, beautiful, and perfect to chill and unwind. The view from ever where you sat was stunning. The redwoods, ocean, and garden surrounded the property. We also loved the horse and cats. Made it easier to not miss our furry kids at home. We can't get back quick enough!!! Peggy was a wonderful host!
We had the best time here. The scenery was absolutly amazing and the photos doesn't make it justice. Both the bathroom house and the main cottage was soo thoughthrough and very beautiful in all it's little details. Hummingbirds, beautiful flowers and redwoodtrees outside the window. We adored this place and truly recommend it!
We had a very quick trip to Big Sur for our anniversary. It was interesting booking a place in South Big Sur and checking out the Southernmost parts. The topography is less wooded near the sea in this area, but still gorgeous. We loved the clean lil' cabin and it was stocked with everything that we needed. It was nice to see natural cleaning supplies and yummy Big Sur local made soap. Most of all we loved all the candles, the great Big Sur hiking and history guides, the grotto bathroom, the bathtub, and the view. The curious and cute cats greeted us at the gate and we marveled at the divine atmosphere as we sauntered down the cobbled steps. Peggy was quite lovely and recommended some perfect local hikes and a scrumptious restaurant for us. Treebones is close by and very delicious! They have spotty internet there--but if you need to check in with your peeps, it is the closest place to go in this area . The internet there only works for about 30 min., but it is better than nothing. Going to this mountain retreat is all about unplugging--there is no signal of any sort here for your phone. There is a landline for emergencies--but it is a noisy line so don't rely on that either.
We expected to have a lot of bugs out there amidst the redwoods, but it wasn't a problem at all. I put on bug spray every night out of old habit--but honestly I didn't see any mosquitoes, which was very nice. We didn't go on the trails outside of the cabin because Peggy said it was a bad tick yr. Almost everything was perfect at this shangri-la except for the overgrowth of poison oak (it is all over big sur) and the scary road to get there. We have an Element so it was ok to drive there--but if you come--be prepared for a steep and bumpy ride. We drove slowly in first gear--but I wouldn't recommend timid drivers arriving to cabin after dark.
Here are some things that I would recommend to bring or to have Peggy keep in the cabin for the future:
1. A pair of binoculars/telescope. There is such excellent birdwatching here. We saw so many friendly singing birds. We were also always on the lookout for some whales (we didn't see any--but there is always next time)
2. A local phone book. We had to call and bother Peggy to get the number for some restaurants for reservations.
3. A good book
4. A deck of cards
Thank you for everything Peggy! We didn't get to leave a note in your guest book but really appreciated your darling little getaway retreat.
If only we had known about the absolute beauty, peace, and tranquility this place offered, we may have chosen to only stay here on our trip to California. What an absolutely perfect place. Untouched by commercialization, it's a true step back into the beauty of nature and a perfect place to regroup and revitalize. My wife and I loved it here. From the woodburning stove to the friendly horses and house cats there to greet you upon arrival and from the mammoth redwood tress surrounding the cabin to the breathtaking ocean views from the bathhouse, I can't imagine a better place to stay in Big Sur...especially for the value. We'd recommend this place and this area to anyone. It really is one of the "must sees" and we can't wait to make it back one day.
We had the fortune of spending our honeymoon at the Big Sur Mountain Retreat the first week of April, 2013. I cannot even begin to describe the wonderful stay we had. This cabin is in the most beautiful setting, and we enjoyed every moment we shared there. The bathhouse is incredible, and I am already missing my evening soaks. Thank you so much Peggy and Richard for being such gracious hosts. We couldn’t have imagined a better way to start our marriage. We truly hope to be able to visit again in the future.
There are beaches and hiking trails within a few minutes driving. We are a breathtaking hour drive to the heart of Big Sur, where there are wonderful restaurants and galleries, beaches and hiking trails. Surfing is a few minutes drive away. Massage and special meals may be available by special arrangement.
