Hale Alealea Beach House, TVNC #1006, is one house back from Kepuhi Beach. Our house is situated on a large private street-to-street lot in Haena's prime neighborhood made up of unique, well manicured beach front/adjacent homes. Our 15000 sq' yard is fully fenced, and mature plumeria trees grace the entrance to the house. The professionally landscaped garden is full of flowering tropical plants, swaying coconut palms and banana trees. The beach is easily accessed by several walking easements, just a moments' stroll from the house along our gravel lane. Tunnels beach is only a 15 minute walk away. Fully renovated in 2014.

This bright and airy house offers two queen bedroom suites, plus two additional bedrooms with two twin beds each, making it a great house for one or two families or a vacation shared by friends. The main level of the house house is upstairs and enjoys leafy framed views of the ocean and the trade breezes. The kitchen is modern and fully appointed. The spacious wrap-around lanai features gas grill and provides plenty of additional dining and lounging space. The Shama Thrush and geckos serenade every evening.

At Kepuhi beach, look to the left to see the kite boarders setting up at the point. You will love watching their colorful kites and daring acrobatics in the surf. To the right, find a calm lagoon with spectacular snorkeling and shelling. Continue your stroll to find the nearby Hanalei Colony Resort for morning coffee, or the terrific Mediterranean Gourmet Restaurant for a sunset cocktail or a beachside massage at the Hanalei Day Spa. About Joanna Gardner

We are a family of four and live in Southern California. While we enjoy the benefits of the city we enjoy getting away from it all when we go on vacation. We have been enjoying the splendors of the North Shore for over a decade. We joke that we bought our house in Kauai as an insurance policy so our kids will always want to vacation with us -- even when they are teenagers! They love being so close to the beach and go there every day when we're on island. We love snorkeling, boogie boarding, stand up paddle boarding, surfing, hiking and running. The kids also love to play in the large private yard. And we all love having plenty of room to invite our friends and family to come share our corner of paradise. It's great to have so much space to BBQ or venture out to one of the terrific local restaurants or best of all, a beach picnic at sunset!

Joanna Gardner purchased this house in 2014

Why Joanna Gardner chose Haena

We fell in love with Hale Alealea the moment we saw it and hope you will too. The location across from the beach offers peak-a-boo ocean views, tranquil breezes and the peaceful sounds of crashing waves. Hale Alealea combines this with the privacy of sitting one property away from the beachfront. The 15K sq' street-to-street lush private lot gives us beautiful tropical grounds to enjoy from so many covered and uncovered lanais, balconies & patios. The comfortable, spacious house is the perfect size for family and friends. From the comfort of indoors we can enjoy the views from many large windows, skylights and sliding glass doors. We also love relaxing on the covered lanai, watching the waves through the swaying coconut palms, listening to the sounds of the trade winds, soothing waves or cooling sun showers.

What makes this house unique

It's hard to leave this tropical oasis yet it is so close to the best snorkeling, surfing and hiking on the island. Checking the surf each morning with a cup of coffee in hand, followed by a walk around the gardens is a great start to a day. The house is so calm and private - yet you feel the rest of island calling with its adventures, whenever you are ready to explore. When you return, a soothing outdoor shower awaits. Watching the sunset, while grilling a fabulous dinner - a perfect day in paradise!

Guestbook comments from the owner

Now back home for a little over 24 hours. It is a bit of a shock coming back to the cold Pacific Northwest. I just wanted you to know how much we enjoyed our stay at your home. It is absolutely beautiful and we were filled with the energy that is Kauai. Thanks for renting your house and sharing your art, photos, ect. I was particularly moved by the vast number of stars visible at night. I was able to do my physical therapy routine (had hip procedure last Sept) outside in your wonderful yard, spend sometime meditating and reading and posturing my tiny place in the universe as I lay outside looking at the stars and listening to the surf. Just great!

Also we were witness to the awesome power of nature as seen in the 40-50 ft. waves a few days ago. Wow, I have seen some big waves before but nothing like that. No snorkeling this time but the majesty of the ocean was in full view.

With Aloha,

Fabulous Location and Well Maintained

  • 5 of 5

We had a group of 6 adults and 2 children (8 years old) that had a wonderful time at the house. The beach in front of the house was within easy walking distance and a great place to watch sunrises and sunsets. The beach had nice sand with a reef break that allowed for the kids to play in the swallow water and see some pretty cool marine life before the bigger waves of the north shore. The house was a comfortable landing spot from daily adventures with all the great ammenitiies as described. The lanais made for memorable tropical BBQ meals and providied plenty of room for our group. Jerri was easy to deal with and helpful in making this a wonderful family vacation. The roosters are a Kauai thing all over the island, so bring earplugs if sensitive to that. We loved the property and would gladly return!

Clean & Comfortable

  • 5 of 5

I felt at home here right away, just looking at the picture of the house while writing this review makes me homesick for it, that's how at home I felt. My husband and I went with our 5 children, who are all in their twenty's and tall, and I was worried that there would not be enough comfortable space for us all to relax in and be together, but that worry was put to rest. The home had plenty of space for us all to be together comfortably. The home is clean, well furnished, a beautiful updated kitchen, a great wrap around porch and the location was great. The owner was quick to address all of my questions and concerns before our arrival, l which I greatly appreciated. I would stay here again in a heart beat.

Great Times

  • 4 of 5

This was our second time staying here with our family. We love the traditional Hawaiian feel of the home, especially the large lanai. We love being within walking distance to the beach and nearby Tunnels beach. The kids enjoyed the sunset at the beach every night. It's a short 5-10 minute drive to historic Hanalei where we shopped and ate shave ice. The home was clean and comfortable and had a very functional kitchen and outdoor BBQ. Would definitely stay again.

Loud roosters around house every morning 4 AM

  • 2 of 5

Beware of the roosters! We were aware that Kauai has some rooster issues but this was ridiculous. The first night here a rooster woke us up at 3:30 AM and he did not stop until 7 AM. I tried to find it and get rid of it but there are very thick hedges around this house, it could not be seen, and just throwing something in the general direction does not work. I found out that you need a direct hit to scare the roosters off. I called the owner more than once and she was pleasant but made it sound like we were the first to have this problem. We even thought of leaving this location after a couple nights of this but did not think we could get our money back and maybe it would get better. No such luck. Ear plugs do not stand a chance to this and the thin single paned windows in the house don't help either. We stayed in Poipu the first half of our trip and did not hear any roosters and rarely saw any. I learned that they are controlled much better in the Poipu area. I contacted the owners again and asked for some compensation for our troubles and lack of sleep. My main beef with them was the lack of disclosure that this has been an ongoing problem. We read the guest book in their house and found several comments about the loud, early roosters. The owner husband, an attorney, said disclosure is not necessary & how can he prevent such a problem, just like he can't prevent me from getting sunburn or stung by a jelly fish. I advised him at how silly that comment was. He did end up refunding 2 of our 6 nights, which was reasonable.

Just to be fair, there were positives about this location. It is close to Tunnels for good snorkeling and close to the Napali coast for nice hiking. This would be a nice place to stay and in a nice location, if it weren't for the roosters.

My main objective here is to help others avoid having their vacation ruined by lack of sleep and having no way to solve it while they are there. The locals shoot the roosters with pellet guns, but there are so many that if someone were to have come out and shoot the one in the hedge from the first night, another is just around the corner. They hang out in an empty lot just on the other side of their neighbor. If our family visits the north shore again, we will be very careful where to stay.

Owner's Response: It is hereby disclosed: Kauai has lots of roosters! Kauai's north shore is very different from the commercialized hotel areas of Hawaii, like Oahu's Waikiki, Maui's Ka'anapali, or even Kauai's Poipu. The north shore of Kauai is very rural with little in the way of buildings, roads, cars, streetlights and cityscape. The Kuhio Highway is actually a simple country road with a number of single lane bridges you must use to cross the many rivers and streams. Ha'ena in particular provides an authentic country setting with lots of wildlife, birds, horses, and yes, even chickens and roosters. It was unfortunate that this guest was so irked by them, and if you are concerned about them, then perhaps the rural countryside of Kauai’s north shore is not for you!

Wonderful home and location

  • 5 of 5

Our family was pleasantly suprised when we arrived. The location/surrounds/house were perfect. It provided us with a great homebase. All the activities we were interested in were within 15-20 minutes away. Jerri, the owner, made sure we made it in ok and that are unexpected extended stay was safe. We look forward to returning.

Great house

  • 5 of 5

This house is pretty much exactly what it states on the listing. A nice but comfortable place to call home for a week. Very well maintained and clean throughout. Kepuhi Beach is 3 minutes away by foot, if that. The coffee shop at the resort is a five minute walk. Easy and spectacular drive back to Hanalei and even easier to the end of the road at Ke'e Beach. Don't miss the botanical garden if you go that way.

Nothing to complain about with this place. Like I said above, it was very comfortable and inviting. I would gladly stay in this house again. The hot tub was nice to have, as it was kind of chilly in the evening. And who doesn't like an outdoor shower?
