Horrible Experience

I searched for a rental early spring to coordinate family vacation plans and was delighted when I found an appropriate rental. We contacted the owners and were infromed the property was available. I sent my deposit and after receipt was subsequently told the property suddenly sold but another properety was available, i looked at this property but was less than pleased, at this time it was late May. I informed the owners of my concerns and another propeerty was miraculously offered at the same rate. I accepted and sent the remaining monies. We arrived on July 12th, to find overflowing garbage in the driveway, flies throughout the house, a toilet leaking onto the floor and a front door that was inoperable (once you got inside). I immediately contacted the owners, and spoke with Linda. She explained the garbage was an issue because of the preceeding tenants (not my problem, in other words). She did express concern about the toilet and the door and told me she would have the "handyman" come over and fix it. We left for the beach and when I returned I found a SCREW stuck in the front door jam, prying it into the open position. Fortunately, the toilet had been repaired. Linda called me later and I described to her the "handyman" fix and she replied he didnt want to disturb you and have to replace the door or locks. Not sure what that meant. She also assured me the area was very "safe" so the door did not even need a lock. This concluded our first day there, the flies were horrible all week and there were no shades on the windows, and the other door locks were inoperable (did not work). The pots and pans were filthy, and I did not utilize them or any of the other amenities there. I am very disappointed and would never utilize this service again. I am embarrassed at myself for not walking away after the initial "switcheroo" but it was already a planned family vacation, to include my husbands family from New York who had never visited Ocean City before. We were so disappointed in the house and embarrassed, we departed on Thursday evening and took them to a hotel for the weekend.
I think you need to fairly represent what is and isnt on your site and allow people to make educated decisions.
please feel free to contact me, would be happy to share additional details.....
Owner's Response: I don’t agree that this review is accurately portraying the house. Renter called and told me the toilet was leaking and the front door was not working properly. I sent someone over within the hour. The toilet was NOT leaking when the maid was there, but as soon as the renters arrived, they called and told me the toilet was leaking some water. The handyman simply tightened the screws which fixed the problem. The front door bottom lock was sticking but the repairman said he would need to replace the entire assembly which he did not have with him nor would he be able to do so until Monday. He said he would simply put a screw in the bottom portion to keep it from hanging and they would be able to use the door deadbolt instead of the bottom lock. I called her back a little later to see if she was okay with the repairs and I explained about the front door, she said okay. I asked if everything else was okay, and she said, “Yes, everything else is fine.” We just had a home inspection done last week. They did not find any other inoperable locks. I simply told her that she needn’t worry about locking the doors for the short period of time if she left before the repairman came because the neighborhood was safe and he was a very trustworthy gentlemen.
About the trash: I told her when people leave on Sat, they have to leave it by the curb and pickup is on Monday. There was still room in 1 can for their use - the maid told me so. I have never had anyone tell me they found dirty pots and pans. It’s always possible a renter could have put a pot back in the cupboard dirty. The maid does not check every pot and pan.
Only 2 living room windows and the kitchen don't have shades. We don’t claim it’s spectacular or a 5 star resort. You can look at the pictures and see it's an older home. Most in Ocean Pines are. When people ask for additional pics, I send them. Our other reviews are fine. I think some people are used to staying at 5 star resorts and are let down that this is just an older house. But I’ve also had many families who loved it and repeat customers. My family stays here every summer. If everyone else is having such a horrible experience, why isn’t anyone else writing up reviews saying the same awful stuff ? The family staying there this week told us they are having a lovely time, enjoying the place and everything is great.
