A BIRD WATCHERS PARADISE

Heron's Rest is a 1910 cabin sitting on 5/8 acre along the Necanicum River north of downtown Seaside, Oregon. Facing west, the picture windows wrap around the front of the house providing hours of beautiful views of the river, estuary, and sunsets. The ample yard offers a play area for kids and a lovely riverside sitting/BBQ area. Located just far enough from downtown to be a quiet secluded setting, the cabin is only 2 blocks from the 12th street bridge, a favorite crabbing location, and just an 8 minute walk (6 blocks) to the beach. The restaurants and shopping areas are a short 10 minute walk, or 2 minute drive away.

The cabin is fully furnished for short or long stays. Two bedrooms without adjoining walls assure quiet evenings, and a queen sofa-sleeper allows for extra guests. There is ample ventilation and a ceiling fan to bring in the sea breeze. On cooler nights electronically controlled heating and electric blankets assure everyone gets a warm nights sleep.

This has been our home and we love it. The laughter of children, BBQs, birthdays, the 4th of July fireworks celebration with fires on the beach, the Hood-to-Coast Relay, volleyball tournaments, sandcastle contests and a hundred other celebrations have brought laughter and joy to this house. Since its construction in 1910, when a clam shell road linked Seaside with the Astoria train station, this house we call Heron's Rest has given rest, relaxation, comfort and joy to those who slept here.

From the picture windows you will enjoy hours of viewing as the wildlife passes on the river. Often herons are seen perched on the nearby trees or snags; eagles swoop in graceful curves as they fish for the days meal, and seals can be seen sneaking their way up river in search of salmon, crab or other local fish. We invite you to join those who have enjoyed this special place for your special occasions.

Why Nick Vasilieff chose Seaside

Seaside is the perfect vacation spot only 1 hour from Portland. Heron's Rest is the perfect cabin, on the river and only blocks from the beach and town.

What makes this house unique

Lounging on the front lawn watching the world float by on the Necanicum River. Walk to Seaside's 3 mile beach, rent a surrey two blocks away, crab on the 12th St. bridge or stroll to town. Quiet, peaceful, surene on our 5/8 acre retreat.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Thank you for such a cozy welcoming space! We enjoyed a drizzly but healing stay (visiting from Colorado).

Holiday with wildlife

  • 5 of 5

The Heron’s Rest was a wonderful place for us to spend Thanksgiving week. The kitchen had everything we needed to make a holiday meal and we enjoyed watching the birds from the living room window. A highlight of our visit was the morning when a herd of elk passed through the yard and then swam across the river. We counted almost sixty animals! Thanks for making the cottage a dog-friendly place — our Ozzie had a great time too.

Cabin on the River

  • 5 of 5

The location on the river was perfect. The photos were a big help in our choice. The cabin

Was a great retreat. It was very clean and everything worked. We had family for the

weekend and we all had a great time. We cooked out a number of times. We did a lot of sitting and watching the river. The time spent on the beach was great, no wind,

sunshine, some fog. The walk was short. Our family said they would like to come back next year. The owner was more than helpful and a gracious host. Any problems, he was on it.

Perfect place for a family reunion

  • 5 of 5

We spent a week here in June for a small family reunion, and we loved it. We could not believe our luck in finding a place as perfect for us as Huron's Rest. It's such a comfortable, tranquil, and beautiful spot, and we never tired of looking at the tidal river in its various stages of rising and falling. We saw great blue herons and kingfishers and various ducks that we couldn't identify, even with the conveniently placed binoculars. The kitchen was perfect for making breakfasts of pancakes, French toast, and waffles, and we lingered evenings in the backyard watching the sunset and enjoying fires in the fire pit. We also enjoyed the books in the bookshelves around the house. I reread Huck Finn, in fact, which was a wonderful story to read while vacationing on a river bank. The house is walking distance to the beach, and we could also reach the town in about 15 minutes, so we had many lovely walks in both directions. The hosts are helpful and thoughtful, and the house is well maintained, well equipped, and well organized. The beds also are very comfortable. We totally loved our stay and are looking forward to returning next year.

Quiet cabin on the river

  • 5 of 5

Our 3rd stay at Heron's rest. We would return, again. It is a great location on the river - far enough from "downtown" to be peaceful but also convenient. The outdoor fire pit is a great addition.

Great family vacation spot

  • 5 of 5

My wife, three daughters in their 20's, our family dog, and I had a wonderful time staying in this very charming comfortable home. The house had everything we were looking for; it was in a beautiful setting on the river, it was conveniently located, and had all the amenities. We didn't get to use the outdoor fire pit but we did have a barbecue dinner one night. Nick was a great host, he made it an easy process, and he was extremely helpful. Five stars from us. Hope you find the opportunity to stay there we would go back in a flash!

Cozy Family Vacation

  • 5 of 5

We have stayed at Heron's Rest 2 times now and we have enjoyed ourselves both times!! The house is smallish, but cozy and quirky with an awesome view of the Necanicum River. Very quiet and peaceful and private. Seaside is an awesome and fun town for families and this little cabin is just outside all of the hustle and bustle that makes Seaside fun~close, but not too close. We have 3 children that love being so close to the river (though it is a steep drop, so beware with very little ones). The surrey rental down the street is a short walk and off you go~tons of fun and a great way to see the sites in town. The little park just across the river is great for the kids too. Pig N' Pancake for one breakfast and Fultono's Pizza & Video Aracade are a must for a night out. We cooked or had most meals in our own kitchen in the cabin, which was fabulous to have all items on hand for such. We grocery shopped just a few blocks away and were set with snacks and meals for at "home". We look forward to staying here again. Our kids already have TONS of memories and missed staying there again this year. They even asked us to do a little drive-by this year when we spent a day in Seaside (this year was camping in Nehalem Bay State Park/Manzinita just 20ish miles further). The owner(s) have been very helpful and timely with questions, concerns, and such~though our concerns were few. :) We hope you enjoy your stay if you choose Heron's Rest as we have.
