STUNNING SOUTH FACING COASTAL LOCATION OVERLOOKING THE SEA.

Caherdaniel Chateau / Country House Rental Photos and Description

Sleeps 10, 6 bedrooms, 5 bathrms, optional catering. Beaches, fishing & golf

Westcove House is a classic Irish manor house just off the famous Ring of Kerry. It sleeps 10, including 2 doubles, 2 twins and two adjoining singles with 5 bath/shower rooms. (For larger groups see The Stables, sleeping 11 and Garden Cottage, sleeping 5). The kitchen is very well equipped and has 2 dishwashers, a large range with 5 gas hobs, 2 electric ovens and grill etc. The beautiful reception rooms all have fabulous views over the Kenmare Estuary and the hills of Beara beyond. The imposing entrance hall leads to the sitting room with an unusual sunken seating area round the open fire, and an arch through to the cosy 'bar' with more comfortable seating and another log fire. Up a quaint staircase is a gallery, stocked with games and books for all ages. Westcove is a real family home with lovely furniture and paintings from Austria, China and of course, Ireland.

The elegant dining room in Westcove House, with panoramic views over the Kenmare Estuary seats 18 comfortably - and can accommodate up to 25 with extra tables. Various delicious catering options can be provided. (see website for details) Live music/dancing can be arranged for guests in our games room which adjoins The Stables property but is also accessible from the outside.

Enjoy a drink on the south facing terrace, which has a built-in stone BBQ & garden furniture, watching our field of decorative Soay sheep at play, or gaze in wonder at the ever-changing light dancing over the sea and mountains beyond.

Our games room – in The Stables - is also ideal for holding talks, classes, activities & demonstrations for a wide variety of interest groups, art groups delight in our north-facing studio, while walking groups can revive weary muscles in our sauna after a day’s rambling. A large lawn with swings is perfect for children or playing games...or even erecting a marquee for a party/small wedding. We also have a rowing boat available at guests own risk.

The surrounding area is fantastic for outdoor pursuits from cycling to fishing, sailing to walking. Golf courses in our area are among the best in the world and within an hours’ drive you will find several top class facilities making Westcove House also an ideal base for golfers. Whatever you enjoy doing this unique classic Irish manor house is perfect for a holiday that will live long in your memory.

Guestbook comments from the owner
Team from England – Hampshire and London - and Switzerland had fantastic week with weather getting better and better. Thank you Katherine and all your team for looking after us all so beautifully! Tips on local golf courses:- Waterville is a world class golf links, don’t miss it … Parknasilla – the best €15 green fee that you are ever likely to spend … Dooks, only 1 hour away, almost as good as Waterville. Tips on the rest:- Skellig Michael, unmissable – walk to Derrynane Abbey when low tide when you go to visit Daniel O’Connell’s house – drive round Skellig Ring circuit – walk up to Beacon Head on Valencia Island and lunch at the Moorings … a great day!

My name is Susannah Adlington and I am a portrait artist living in Hampshire, England with my husband Michael. My father’s family have had Irish connections for several hundred years, and my parents bought Westcove House in the early 60s … since then four generations of our family have been enjoying holidays here – we just love the place and feel sure that you would too. Indeed many of our guests return to Westcove time and time again – something which we view as the highest form of praise!

Susannah Adlington purchased this chateau / country house in 1962

Westcove House is very dear to our family. We have spent many years upgrading and improving the house to modern standards and also rennovating our other properties at Westcove (the Stables, Garden Cottage & Pier Cottage) whilst retaining their character and charm. The income we receive from renting the properties when we ourselves are not here, helps with the ever-increasing costs involved with the upkeep of period properties, whilst hopefully enabling us to share this much loved magical place with others for many more generations to come.

Westcove and the surrounding area is teeming with history, character and charm...there really is so much to see and do locally. If you choose to stay home the terrace and garden are magical places for dining or relaxing whilst admiring the views over the harbour to the hills beyond - even to sit by a window, the scenery and light is always changing as cloud shadows move with the wind across the water and bog-lands. The cares and worries of the world just melt away....

There is plenty to see and do in and around Caherdaniel. Visit DERRYNANE HOUSE & NATIONAL PARK, ancestral home of one of Ireland’s leading historical figures, Daniel O’Connell known as 'The Liberator'. A 19th century politician, Daniel championed the cause of the Irish in the British parliament and succeeded in achieving Catholic Emancipation, his house and grounds’ have been preserved and are open to the public in the summer. The house is surrounded by spectacular sub-tropical gardens & the lovely tea-rooms have an irresistible selection of home-made cakes. Don’t forget to pick up a map of the ‘FAIRY TRAIL’ and see how many ‘fairy houses’ you can discover in the gardens! In Caherdaniel stop for a Guinness at Freddy’s – a well known local pub which has been there forever, or go to The Blind Piper – a younger atmosphere and excellent food. In summer, there’s a bustling indoor & outdoor market in the Community Centre between 10 and 12.30 on Friday mornings with lots of local produce and crafts. There is also an excellent food market on Sundays. The largest & finest & arguably the best example of a pre-Christian ring fort in Ireland, Staigue Fort is less than 15 mins drive away. It is worth a visit, especially on a clear day, when the views out over the Atlantic are breathtaking. Even older than is is the Tetrapod track on Valentia...of international importance, this series of footprints of a tetrapod is the first fossil record of an amphibian animal in the world.

A boat trip to Skellig Islands, a UNESCO World Heritage site is a must! Rising majestically from the sea, Skellig Michael towers 218m above sea level and on the summit of this awe-inspiring rock is you will find perfectly preserved beehive huts, part of a 6th century monastic settlement. On the spectacular Small Skelligs 23,000 pairs of gannet nest on every available ledge making it the second largest gannet colony in the world.

Of course there are numerous lanes to wander and cycle along or take in the sea air on the beautiful beaches and dunes of Derrynane. There are also a couple of excellent, slightly more challenging walks you can try, starting from Westcove itself.

40 minutes drive west along the north coast of the beautiful Kenmare estuary, is the picturesque town of Kenmare itself, well-known for for its varied and tempting shops and teeming with excellent bars and restaurants ...a popular choice for the ladies, especially on Wednesdays when there is a lively market all year round selling everything from crafts and jewellery to a mouthwatering selection of cheeses, pates and other home made delicacies!

A little further inland is the bustling town of Killarney with many lovely bars, restaurants, spas and of course its famous lakes and national park. Visit also the Gaelic speaking Dingle peninsula and take a trip to see Funghi - a wild bottle nose dolphin that has made the bay his home.

Wherever you are in Kerry you will find excellent and varied restaurants offering delicious seafood & quality local produce. The convivial atmosphere of the Irish pub is legendary & many serve great value home-cooked food. The whole family can be assured of a very warm welcome. Kerry people are known for their wit & stories... you will be drawn into conversation with the locals so enjoy making new friends the 'craic' (fun) & stories. Don't forget to catch a live music session some evening!
