We give the cottage on Burns Lake our highest rating! Everything was delightful--the cottage itself, the grounds, the game room, the lake, and of course, our gracious hosts!
No motors are allowed on the lake, and it is just the right size for taking out the (provided) canoe and paddleboat. It is also quiet, with about half the shoreline bordered by the National Forest. Our 5 year old daughter caught scads of panfish and small bass, much to her delight!
The kids also couldn't get enough of the game room; we often had to pull them away from pool and air hockey to enjoy the "real" world.
And enjoy it we did! From pristine Pere Marquette Beach, to the giant dunes of Silver Lake, to the Coast Guard festival in Grand Haven, to the tranquility of Burns Lake itself, we were never at a loss for something keep us entertained.
Our sincere thanks to John and Jan for making our stay a wonderful experience.

Each year my 11 yr old son and I come to the Muskegon area and have stayed at different places. This cottage was the best so far. Upon arrival, we found the property to be just as represented. It was quiet and secluded. The owners, John and Janet came down to meet when we arrived and made sure we were comfortable. The game room was just as represented, everything worked and was in good condition. The property is huge and includes a trampoline as well as an outdoor basketball net and maintained tennis court. We were able to take both canoe and peddle boat rides and swim in the lake. The hosts thought of many things to make their visitors comfortable including placing a canopy with netting over the outdoor eating area so we could eat in the shade without the bugs. The hot tub was clean and placed in a covered structure, so it could be used even if it rained. The cottage was clean and comfortable but small (you can hear everything in the upper bedroom in the master). It was stocked with everything you would have in your own home and well maintained. We did have an issue with the toilet backing up, but nothing that couldn't be fixed with a plunger. The name and telephone number of a handyman was given in case of an emergency, which we never had. It was about a 15 minute drive to North Muskegon where we rode go-karts and played mini-golf and ate dinner at the Handsome Hobo (would recommend). We were about an hour from the Silver Lake sand dunes where we went for a dune buggy ride. We would definitely recommend this cottage to families for all the activities and adults for quiet peacefulness of the property. We can't wait to come back! Thanks John and Janet for a great stay.
What a wonderful place to stay! This quaint little cottage is located about 8 miles northeast of Muskegon in a fairly secluded area on a small, quiet lake. John (the owner) went out of his way to accommodate us. I am a college professor and needed internet access to teach my online summer courses and he made sure to have cable internet installed before our arrival. In addition, he purchased two portable air conditioners (one for downstairs and one for upstairs), which made a substantial difference during the recent heat wave. There is new carpet installed upstairs and he also replaced the roof. There is a grill located outside next to a screen room. In addition, there is a large game room located in a converted garage between the cottage and main house, which is where John and his wife reside. The game room was a hit with our kids when we first stayed here in 2006 and my wife and I made frequent use of it again (e.g., ping pong, pool, air hockey; trampoline located next to the garage). We enjoyed canoeing on the calm lake in the morning and spending time in Muskegon and surrounding areas during the day before coming back to our cozy cottage for dinner and relaxation at night. (Oh yeah, we also made frequent stops at the little fruit and vegetable market about 1.5 miles down the road...nothing like those Michigan blueberries!) We really appreciated the privacy that the estate offered. All in all, it was a wonderful experience and quite a bargain for everything you get. Definitely plan on going back a third time. Cheers! : )
Our family of four (kids 10 and 8) loved this cottage! It had everything we could possibly want: beautiful setting, lake for swimming, boating (canoe/paddleboat), and fishing, game room, huge fields for playing, and plenty of peace and quiet.
Mosquito-free enclosed eating area outside.
WiFi, TV including a DVD-player enabled us to stay in touch while vacationing. Bring your favorite movies!
Location close to many family-friendly attractions, including state parks, farmers markets and great ice cream parlors. Major super market eight miles away has everything your family will need.
Great five star hosts!
This home is very cozy and has all the ammenedities that you have at home.
The wifi signal can't be reached at the cottage, you need to go to the game room to access the internet, which is located up at the main house. Everything else is exactly as the description states.
The home was in good condition. We were frustrated with the fact that we were unable to stay outside for very long as we were being attacked by the black flies and ants, you must bring your bug spray.
The canoe, paddleboat and game room are kid size and not comfortable for adults. Lake access and hot tub access are not private.
Must see: go to Silver Lake to see the Sand Dunes!!
This cottage and the property are truly a little piece of heaven on earth. There is so much to see and do right on the property and the scenery is breathtaking. You can go on Burns Lake and enjoy fishing, boating and swimming. Our children loved the game room which keep them busy for hours. The grounds are well kept and great for a playing sports of any kind, cooking out or relaxing in the gazebo.
The cottage itself is very beautiful and cozy. The perfect place to relax at the end of the day. You can also relax in the hot tub that looks out on Burns Lake. The scenery is breathtaking and very picturesque.
John and Jan are excellent host. They were always available and willing to do what ever they could to make our stay a pleasant one. John even took time to teach our children how to bait a fishing pole and showed them how to cast the line. We could not ask for better host. They, along with their son Tristan, were charming and gracious hosts.
The best part about the cottage is the privacy. When you rent the cottage you have the entire place to yourself. Our family looks forward to coming back to this little piece of heaven next year and we believe you will enjoy it as well.
Fishing, wildlife and bird watching, boating and lake swimming from the property.
Burns Lake prohibits motors but access is available to the adjacent lake which allows the use of both motor boats and jet skis.
