Having just returned from our holiday at the Studio Sarita at Buger Majorca I thought I would let other travellers know our thoughts. Firstly Majorca is a lovely island and the Property is situated in a lovely peaceful location. Unfortunately though we encountered several problems, firstly ants, we were inundated with them , dead ants were even floating around in the pool which wasn't very nice. There is no airconditioning and it was very difficult to sleep, especially as the double bed is only 4ft wide. The pool is nice once we got rid of the ants but part of the surrounding area around the pool has a big crack which made me think there might be some subsidence. There was no english tv or radio channels which although were not vital it woould have been a bonus. The spiral staircase was I thought quite dangerous and also the mezzanine balcony and I was glad I did not have small children with me or elderly or infirm parents. There was damp in the kitchen and some of the plaster had come off walls. You definitely need a car as it was several miles to a decnt supermarket or beach etc.
Owner's Response: Villa Sarita is in a totally rural and peaceful location, far away from the usual tourist bustle which is part of its charm, so a car is needed to get to beaches (15-20mins) or to a large supermarket. But it is only 2 minutes from the new motorway. Buger is a 5 minute walk with a bakery and a small shop selling everything from fresh bread, eggs, local cheeses, selection of wines & spirits to batteries & loo paper! There is a Saturday market & Campanet or Sa Pobla are only a 5 minute drive and sell everything else. Generally, renters do a weekly big shop in either nearby Inca or Pollensa.
We send out a comprehensive information pack including details of how to deal with the island's ant population which can be intrusive if food is left out. We understand that there was an unusual heatwave for June at the time that this renter was staying and this could have also exacerbated an ant problem who do live there all year round! The gardeners check the pool 2-3 times a week but in between most people quite enjoy the gentle exercise of 'netting' the pool as insects regularly choose to commit suicide there. We bought the property over 10years ago and though at first we were concerned about the crack in one corner of the terrace, it has not moved or grown since then and maybe due to tree roots.
Altho’ there is presently no air-conditioning in the top bedroom, there are big fans available for both floors and we are planning to install it upstairs for the 2010 season. We have always advised renters to keep shutters closed and windows open to allow breezes during high season. The 5ft Sofabed on the ground floor is often preferred.
There is a TV/Stereo but since we do not live there year round we don't subscribe to the Sky or European satellite. Most people bring their i-pods which plug into the music system. This is clear on the Home Away site.
On our site we do say that the property is not really suitable for very young children, mainly because there a quite a few stone steps around, and we find that older people tend to be more careful with regard to the circular staircase which is a rustic feature of the property. The property is maintained in very good condition and if anything should go wrong, our man on the island, Michelangelo, is generally there within a few minutes. It is his mother who cleans the property and she has good old fashioned standards.
This is the only negative review we have had in over 5 years of successful renting with Home Away.
