Photos and Description of the Belfast vacation cottage rental
Three bedrooms, two full bathrooms. Sleeps eight comfortably.

Modeled after an authentic, turn of the century village depot, Payson Hill Station is family friendly, fun and comfortable. This 2-for-1 retreat features a classic porch cottage and a lovingly restored Maine Central railroad caboose (circa 1917).

Inspired by traditional Maine vacation camps, the cottage features a lovely raised brick hearth, country furniture and wide plank floors. Casting a warm glow over a rough-sawn pine interior, the fireplace serves as a hub for all activities with connections to a generous sleeping area, dining area and porches. A cozy sleeping loft covers a third of the great room with a bathroom and reading area tucked underneath. Floor to ceiling windows flank either side of the fireplace, flooding the interior with light while providing a panoramic view of the trout pond and woodlands beyond. Pass through french doors and relax on a spacious 16'x32' observation deck. The caboose boasts a modern, fully equipped kitchen, four twin beds and a second bathroom.

See the Sights!: The original watchtower or 'cupola' in the Caboose offers spacious seating and scenic views of the surrounding woodlands and farm.

We are located in the scenic farm community of Knox, Maine and only minutes away from coastal Belfast and Penobscot Bay, the Frye Mountain Wildlife Management Area and beautiful Lake St. George.

Ski, snow tube and toboggan at Camden Snow Bowl approximately 35 minutes travel time.

Play golf at Country View Golf Course, only 15 minutes by scenic country roads.

This is truly a Special Place!: Meet 'Priscilla','Myles' and 'Abigail' our comical trio of Pilgrim Geese and our handsome flock of barnyard chickens - you're always welcome to join us at feeding time or to gather eggs.

And nothing fascinates kids more than Baby Chicks - let us know in advance and we'll try to schedule a hatch to occur during your stay!

A healthy variety of delicious, farm fresh produce is grown here in season; high bush blueberries, apples, snow peas, tomatoes, peppers, squash, corn and pumpkins.

During your stay, you're are invited to enjoy a complimentary, fresh-baked pie or breakfast muffins from our country kitchen. Quench your thirst with fresh, cool water drawn from our granite-ledge drilled well. Fresh apple cider is available to our guests from early Fall on.

Fresh, succulent Maine lobsters are plentiful and available locally at very reasonable prices. If you like, we can show you how to cook it or we can prepare it for you!

*Ask about our delicious clambakes and home-cook

Rainy day? No Problem!!!: Not to dwell on the negative, but hey... not every day is a Sunny day!

For your enjoyment, the Depot is stocked with a variety of good books and magazines to read, board games (checkers anyone?), cards, a cribbage board and the free use of videotapes, DVD player and Direct TV.

While relaxing indoors on a cool or rainy day, why not take off the chill with a cozy fire?

Frogs croak, Chipmunks scold, Roosters crow! The Birch shaded dam behind the Depot and Caboose maintains a peaceful farm pond and is home to croakin' frogs, sun turtles and an occasional Beaver or Otter! Cross the brook and take a long, peaceful walk through fifteen acres of private forest. Gather wildflowers, pick berries, bird-watch... one guest recorded 30 species in just 24 hours! Look for wildlife... deer, turkey, beaver, otter, porcupine, partridge, snowshoe hare; even an occasional flying squirrel or lonely moose have been spotted by our guests. Upon your return, relax on our huge sun deck or swing away in a hammock under the pines. The fun is just beginning at sunset! Build yourself a crackling campfire... roast wieners, toast marshmallows, have a rousing sing-a-long. Weather permitting, treat yourself to a free light show - star gazing is unsurpassed here! Enjoy the childhood thrill of chasing fireflys as thousands sparkle all around you.

Other Activities: peaceful napping, marshmallow toasting, bird watching, hiking, firefly chasing, weiner roasting

Golf: Country View Golf Club is famous throughout Maine and New England as one of the most scenic golf courses in the United States. Located just a few miles from our farm, this gorgeous country club is located on top of the highest hill in Brooks.

On a clear day you can see the Camden Hills, the White Mountains of New Hampshire and Mount Cadillac in Maine's famous Acadia National Park. As breathtaking as the distant views is the scenery on the golf courses itself, which includes hundreds of trees, numerous gardens and ponds, and endless manicured fairways and greens.

You don't have to be a golfer to appreciate the beauty of this magnificent place... rent a set of clubs and experience it for yourself!

Ski: The Camden Snow Bowl really is where the 'mountains meet the sea'!

From the summit of 1300' Ragged Mountain, home to the Snow Bowl's trails, skiers and riders have an incredible view of the Atlantic Ocean. It is a view unlike any other in the East.

In addition to Alpine skiing and snowboarding, there are many other winter activities available at the Snow Bowl... snow tubing, ice skating and snowshoeing, to name a few.

Your vacation search stops here!

Your search for a Maine vacation can stop here! We spent days searching for the right place for our family trip to Maine. We wanted a little of everything and we got it all! The Ditano’s are superb hosts, leaving no detail undone. The Depot, everything a Maine cabin should be, set back in the quiet woods, beautiful rustic décor, clean-as-a-whistle, filled with all the comforts of home- books, warm blankets, games, washer/dryer- yet away from it all. You will love waking up here, breathing in the crisp air after a long, peaceful night's rest. Enjoy your morning coffee on the large wrap-around deck as birds sing, frogs croak and the beaver builds (can you spot him?) The caboose was our kid’s favorite, clean and cozy, reminiscent of days gone by, and a comfy kitchen for cleaning and cooking the day's catch! Plenty of room for a large family!

There is so much going on here, yet you cannot help but be spellbound by the gentle peacefulness that abounds. The pond is your own private oasis, let the kids uncover it's mysteries (and yes, there are some big fish in there!) Take a long hike through the woods, your cares will fall by the wayside, remember to breathe deep- the air here smells great! When (and if) you want to leave to sight-see, drive 15 minutes into Belfast, experience an authentic sea-faring, non-commercialized town along the Penobscot Bay. Acadia National Park with its breathtaking scenery, and abundant outdoor activities is spectacular. We spent two days exploring the park and Bar Harbor both on our bikes and by car. The tidal pools in Wonderland were our favorite. Lake George is an excellent day trip for kayaking!

Of course, there’s plenty to do if you stayed home all day too. Nap in the hammock, fish, hike, bike, or swim. Enjoy a juicy blueberry pie (Thanks Becky!) and the best farm fresh eggs around. The kids can experience life on the farm…building a goose pen, watching baby chicks hatch, feeding the chickens. Oh, and the karate lessons! What a blast for the kids. Did I mention the stars and campfire? Round everyone up for a good ‘ol fashion campfire, some hotdogs, marshmallows and some amazing star gazing. It was so very hard to leave this happy place where time slows down and the things that really matter come into focus. So, stop searching, start packing-Tell Jim, Cheryl and the girls we said “Hi, miss them, and hope to get back real soon."

Thanks so much for all the fun, friendship, great conversation and of course, the memories.

Words simply cannot describe the beautiful accomodations on a quaint farm in Belfast, Maine. The Caboose & Depot are decorated so lovely they could be pictured in a National Magazine. The fresh flower bouquets and the rustic decor is so warm and inviting. The walking trail is delightful and the stars just seem to shine brighter from the large deck. The animals add even more excitement to an already amazing retreat. The Ditano's go above and beyond their call of duty as host & hostess. They get a First Prize Blue Ribbon for their incredibly delicious baked goods and farm fresh eggs. We were able to enjoy a fabulous vacation because of a wonderful couple that strive for excellence. As we travel through Maine in the future we will definitely return to this well maintained vacation property. Thanks so much for the fellowship, food and fond memories. A truly perfect getaway!

A Great Location to Enjoy all of Maine!

Terrific accomodations for a family adventure in Maine. We have three boys ages 3, 5, and 7. First, boys love a good campfire-Jim had wood for us to enjoy one every night. Second, boys love a caboose!- the bunk beds were a delight. Third, boys love to fish and be outside-the pond was a great perk and we fished as much as we could. The farm is a treasure and both Jim and Cheryl let the boys experience chickens, geese and pigs first hand.
Best Blueberry muffins and pie you can imagine and the stars are like diamonds from this spot.
Just rustic enough to feel like you are on a campsite but clean and well equipped accomadations for taking it easy as well.
Close to the best that Maine has to offer in terms of national and state parks, ocean fronts, lobster lunches, and even a Moose Safari to Moosehead Lake (we saw three moose!).
Our boys enjoyed it so much they surprised us to say that would rather come back here to Maine, than return to Disneyland in CA for our next trip.
Thank you Jim and Cheryl for a vacation spot to remember.

Great place for family celebration

Our recent stay at Payson Hill Farm was a delight to all. Our family spent the holiday weekend at this wonderful location. The accomodations were clean and attractive. Our host and hostess were generous, and helpful. I can’t say enough about them. We loved it here. We slept in the caboose with our grandkids who were charmed by the cupola and delighted in climbing up there for games of their own making, including full body “spider webs” across the passage way. There was an Eastern Phoebe nest above the caboose door and a nesting pair guarding it. We tried to limit our use of that entrance to times when the adult birds were gone, but from the evening of our arrival they were worried by us. Our host told me recently that four of the 5 eggs hatched and fledged and left the nest several weeks after we left.
The depot is my dream of a cabin, bare wood and stone but so well finished that it is both attractive and functional. Did I mention that we were supplied with dry firewood and they actually built a fire in the fireplace for us one night? We put our adult kids in the depot for the weekend, but when they left, we moved in for the queen bed. We all used the laundry (complete with detergent and softener) in the basement.
No chocolates on your pillow, but better still, fresh eggs, warm blueberry muffins (huge!) and a blueberry pie—ours arrived after the kids had left what a pity. Not! It was delicious!
So much to see and do: kids and adults fishing—and catching—off the dock in the pond; hiking through the woods discovering wildflowers galore and tree houses; the barn was a magnet with goslings to see and hold (gently) and piglets to see; the chicken house and yard with a ready supply of bread to eager hands while explaining the different breeds we were seeing. We drove to Acadia and spent the day hiking and picnicking; by car we explored from Stockton Springs to Camden finding some great shopping and a lovely artist's coop; one day we left about noon for a 2 hour drive through Baxter State Park—we saw a moose!
We all want to return at least once next summer. I read the reviews; they are right on target. This is the place for us in Maine.

If you read the description and the reviews above you might think this sounds too good to be true. The fact is Jim and Cherryl are amazing hosts and the Caboose and Cabin are as written! The muffins they bake are to die for, and the blueberry pie is heavenly. The beds are very comfortable and the quietude of the location was perfect for sleeping; even our children slept in! We got up in the mornings and walked the trails. We splashed around in the pond when it was hot. The fire pit was perfect for night time activities and star gazing. There is a charcoal grill for cooking up some steaks, or veggies. The washer and dryer are in excellent running condition so we weren't doing laundry when we got home. Above someone mentioned the decorations; it is something you would see in a vacation magazine for rustic style; simple and beautiful. Did I mention how wonderful Jim and Cherryl are?

My wife and I have three young boys, I work as an executive and my wife runs our farmstead. This means that as parents our alone time is very valuable. The cabin/caboose combination allowed for that separation of 'church and state' that parents crave when you can't finish sentences with your spouse without a child chiming in with, "Papa, Papa, Papa..." Even though the boys were in the Caboose, we could still hear the giggles at night as the talked themselves to sleep about the day's adventures, while we sat by the fire pit. There is a TV with satellite but its almost a sin to turn it on with such natural beauty surrounding you. We read most nights and soaked in the quiet song of the crickets.

I would be remised if I did not speak of how wonderful the area is as well. We spent time in Belfast, an undiscovered coastal town. My wife and both have lived in touristy seaside towns, this has way more charm without the lines of traffic and tourists. The Belfast park has an amazing play area for the kids, friendly people all around and the beautiful bay. We also drove around and found alpaca farms, went on a lobster boat in Bar Harbour, and visited the museum of transportation in Owls Head.

This is the perfect location for a restful vacation with the family, or a romantic get away with your loved one. Jim and Cherryl are amazing at making you feel like you are part of their family and will go out of their way to make your vacation more enjoyable; I have too many examples to list here but believe me they really have created a vacation worth doing again and again!
