Numerous beaches on salt water nearby. Passes for swimming in local fresh water pond are available for nominal fee - - on weekly basis. You don't have to go to Acadia (and hour away) for hiking and biking. There are fabulous trails throughout Brooksville and Deer Isle (brochures can be provided). Trained Maine guides offer fishing trips and supply all the necessary for local conditions - on salt and fresh water. Kayak and canoeing trips can be arranged with or without guides. Rental boats can be delivered and collected from desired location. There are many boat access areas maintained by Brooksville - often with picnic tables, etc. Moorings can be rented on daily basis at the Buck's Harbor Marina, from which there are also daily excursions on a schooner, a fishing boat, etc. Golf courses on Deer Isle and Bucksport welcome summer visitors. The Deer Isle club also offers tennis.

Many artists have been drawn to the area, not only because of its natural beauty, but also because of the Haystack School on Deer Isle, where many have taught or studied. Their studios are a pleasure to visit because of their art and also because they are usually beautifully situated and with gorgeous landscaping! There are also lots of local art galleries featuring local artists work, and images of the area. Artists include not just painters, photographers and sculptors, but also textile design, ceramics, furniture design, etc.
Organic farming mecca.:
The Blue Hill area and Brooksville in particular have been a center for the development of organic farming in Maine. Very near 'Harborside House' is the Nearing's 'Good Life Center' and also Elliott Coleman's Four Season Farm where produce is available at a colorful farm stand. The Buck's Harbor Market and the Co Op in Blue Hill are also committed to selling local produce. Its also easy to get free range chicken eggs, goats cheese, and amazing meats at other farms in Brooksville.
