Cruises, sailing, swimming, golf and c.c. skiing: The area is home to MERI (Maine Environmental Research Institute) which provides daily cruises - some for teens alone, some for families - to introduce visitors to marine life in the area. Half or entire day sails on the schooner available daily from Brooksville's Buck's Harbor Marina. Besides all the salt-water beaches, you can also get weekly passes to swim on (fresh-water) Walker Pond. Guided fishing excursions available with Maine guide who will also provide everything necessary. Kayak and canoeing trips can be arranged with or without guides. Boat can be brought to and picked up at desired locations. Several golf courses in the area welcome vacationers. Deer Isle and Bucksport courses particularly popular. The Deer Isle course also has tennis.

Artists and Galleries: The entire Blue Hill Peninsula and Deer Isle have been chosen by numerous artists for year round and summer residence. Many have connections with the Haystack School on Deer Isle - where classes are given all summer in various arts in including painting, sculpture, ceramics, weaving, etc. Visiting the local artists studios is great fun - especially as these studios are usually located in lovely settings and someone in the family loves to garden!

Organic farming: The Blue Hill area - and particularly Brooksville and Cape Rosier - are historic centers for organic farming - a Maine specialty. The Nearing's 'Good Life Center' is open for visits and tours in the summer, as is Elliot Coleman and Barbara Damrosh's 'Four Season Farm' where fresh organic produce is for sale! The Coop in Blue Hill is a center for organic produce and much more, including a small cafe serving breakfast and lunch. There is now a Brooksville Farmers' Market where local produce is sold weekly - Tuesday morning! Local restaurants around the peninsula specialize in using local produce, including goats cheeses, baked goods and of course clams, crab and LOBSTERS!

Other Activities: kayaking, blueberry picking, artists' galleries, lots of great restaurants

Great Place!

Lydia C. Catskills
Review Submitted: April 10, 2008 Date of Stay: March 2008
Staying here at this lovely house in Brooksville has been great! A perfect location to be on the coast of Maine. And this location is fabulous with a truly quiet and natural setting, yet excellent shopping nearby. There's fresh food, clean air, and good people. A restorative choice which has soothed my soul.

This house has been as comfortable as if I had family in Maine. I have been able to settle in from day one with all my housefold needs accounted for. I love the privacy with trees all around, but wide open spaces to see the amazing sunsets. But, I like the conveniences close enough and can get to the Buck's Harbor Market for my fresh veggies if I'm not going to Blue Hill to shop at the Blue Hill Food Coop or Tradewinds (both excellent) . It's been great getting my eggs, vegetables, cheese and bread just by drivng to the various neighbor's around Brooksville. Maine is truly about abundance and fresh, local food.

There are so many activities here, even off season, but I love nature and it's why I came. I love water and I'm constantly going to the ocean and on the trails of Holbrook Island Nature Sanctuary nearby. I've seen otter, rabbit, and deer tracks. I've seen my first American Woodcock in this yard... beautiful and very exciting! (All my friends are envious). This is the best place for an artist looking for a quiet place to relax while working on projects. I've accomplished so much. And musicians would love it, too, because the house seems to make music sound so much richer. And, happily, there's no neighbors to disturb. Kids will love it here, because there's plenty of room to play. I couldn't ask for a better vacation home with a nice owner who wants you to have a good time.
