My family had a wonderful stay at this home on the Great Sacandaga. We've been coming up to this lake every year for 40+ years and this home was a great find we somehow hadn't stumbled across before. The owners have gone to a lot of trouble to attend to the details. These details make the difference between a trip that is OK, but full of irritating little annoyances, and one that is carefree. Carefree means that they stocked various shampoos, extra lightbulbs, dishwashing detergent, sponges, pillows (in plastic covers as if just bought at the store!), and even had grilling equipment in its original package next to the gas grill. If there was something missing that we should have had, we couldn't find it. The details included the decor. This is the Adirondacks, and in the Adirondacks I expect haphazard decoration and tacky hand-me-down furniture when I rent. Not here. There was clearly a carefully executed camp/Adirondack plan that goes right down the fishing rod lamp on the porch and themed border wallpaper that encircles most of the rooms. I wouldn't personally have chosen the wallpaper with outhouses on it for the bathroom, but by golly it works. There's a great porch with seemingly deadly windows that hang from the ceiling. Wonderful place to eat breakfast. Across the road is a very easy walk down to a small beach and deep water dock in a cove. Very nice. A beach and a deep water dock are hard to find together on this lake. The two kayaks available to renters at no extra charge are a real plus. There's even a little stream that runs all along the property - very quaint.
The negatives are minor or come with the territory: 1) Bedrooms are tiny (read: tough to fit suitcase and me) and the largest bed is the Q futon in the livingroom. We didn't find this nearly as challenging as we thought, though, because the futon is actually unexpectedly comfy and when at camp, crashing in bed after a lot of fun at the beach requires no extra space. 2) The house sits near the road, so expect to be woken up by the trucks in the morning unless you keep the windows closed (which works pretty well!). That goes with the territory on this lake. It's very hard to find a place far enough off the road to make a difference. 3) a bunch of the windows don't open. Compensation on a hot night: room air conditioning! Wow, what a treat up here in the mountains.
All in all a really nice camp, with an abundance of charm and appointments that make life in the mountains easy and fun.
