Upon arriving at the unit, we quickly found the place was a dirty mess. Beer cans behind dressers, pop tarts on floor, no one had vacuumed, all the dishes in the cabinets were disgusting and unusuable, we had to utilize paper plates. There were cigarette burns in many of the mattresses, and were not good quality and the beds were made of wicker and almost fell apart. Blinds were busted and were noticeable from the street. What was more disturbing was that the deck and area to the beach had many loose spindels with some missing. There was one section that had 5 straight missing and a 4 foot gap. We had 4 young children that could have easily fallen through one of these and been injured. We quickly called the owner and voiced our concerns. He did have the cleaning crew come back (they were not very helpful and irritated at best) and had a handyman repair the spindels the next day. Other than that he told us he did not have time to hear our concerns and he would not move us to another unit or do anything else for us, and that he was giving us "practical solutions for our problems." It is a shame to spend $4k, drive 12 hours, only to find that you have to clean for the first 6 hours that you are there and deal with these issues while having 4 children at the beach. Photos of the unit are outdated as the floors are different and the furniture is changed. All of the furniture is outdated/wicker/ has holes in it. Dishwasher barely cleans things. Television is very small in the living area, DVD player is somewhat broken. If you are looking for a clean, updated beach house, this is not for you. The location is awesome, and we had a good time because we were with our families, but the accomodations left something to be desired. I am a simple man, that does not expect much aside from cleanliness and the safety of my children, and Portofino did not provide those things that should be automatic for what would be considered a vacation home. I would not stay here again, nor would we recommend the place.
I understand the owner is not from there, but in my opinion does a poor job in management. He did call to have cleaners come back and porch repaired, but it was too little too late. These are not things we should have to deal with while being on vacation. Conduct maintenance during the off season, and hire a cleaning crew that actually cleans. I am sure the people that rented after us will find the place much cleaner than we did, because we cleaned it as appropriate.
Owner's Response: This information is totally wrong or very skewed at best . I was in the house on 5/9/12 and right before we arrive we had the living room and the kitchen carper removed and replaced by wood and 2 brand new area rugs. A new corner table and 2 chairs were added
On 5/15 there was a detailed cleaning done by professional cleaner .The house was sparking . I can not guarantee what the tenant that came before the English family did ,but when contacted the house keeper they went back and re-cleaned and was told they had to hunt for the cigarette damage in the mattress because it was very subtle. The maintenance crew called me about the blind which was perfect before I left and they repaired them.. Again some renter are not as careful as others .
The beds are wicker,because that is the theme of the house .The dishwasher works great if you rinse the food ,as I do at my home. Regarding the pictures , the one on the site are the most recent . I update them after any renovation.
Look at the previous reviews to see for your self . The group who were there e mailed me and said the house was gorgeous “Everything was great!! The house is gorgeous and the location is amazing too. We all enjoyed it very much and will be leaving good reviews” this is just coped and pasted from their e mail. I can forward that to any one.
