Guestbook comments from the owner
Hello. I am one of the owners. Thanks for your interest in this house. My husband and I bought it last July 2004 as an eventual retirement home. It was marketed by the previous owners as Eastview Cottage through Hearts of Maine. If you rented it before, we hope you will try it again. We have kept the name but have upgraded lots of the furnishings and equipment. This winter we are having a full interior staircase built to the bunkroom over the master bedroom and are adding a waterside deck and staircase down to the water. As new owners, we are interested in providing whatever renters desire -- within reason, so please ask. We love the house and think you will too.

Stu, in the photo, is a retired Coast Guard officer, who enjoyed the icebreaker service for 22 years. He became a veterinarian at age 50 and now practices small animal medicine and raises Icelandic Sheepdogs. Our bitch, Runa, is in the rowing shell with him offshore of the house. Debbie was a Washington lawyer for 20 years before taking up sheep farming. Now she manages the farm and renting the Maine house until she and Stu retire up there.

Debbie Dull purchased this house in 2004

We bought this house after vacationing in Maine each fall for 25 years. We choose it because it is beyond the traffic to Bar Harbor, but close enough for a day trip. It has the required spectacular view from every room of the ocean that included islands. It is also on 2 miles of nearly desserted beach yet near a 'real' town, i.e. one with a hardware store and a lobster coop. It is also near a hospital and a small university. Perfect for us.

Best Vacation Ever

  • 5 of 5
I cannot say enough about this property - the house, the yard, the beach, and the nearby communities, parks and trails made our stay there the best vacation we've ever had. We are already planning to return as soon as possible! The views from the immaculate house are breath-taking. The beach is beautiful and so much is accessible right out the door. Jonesport and nearby towns are welcoming and hospitable too (and pet-friendly) - all the art and antique shops could keep anyone busy. There are so many activities close by - especially for hikers, kayakers, nature lovers and bird watchers. We cannot wait to return - many thanks to the owners for sharing this piece of heaven!

Gets more amazing every year!

  • 5 of 5
I said in a 2009 review this property provided the best vacation ever. It was true. We're anxiously awaiting our 6th stay at Eastview Cottage in Sept 2014! Year after year our vacations to Jonesport just get better and more amazing. There are always new discoveries mixed in with "old" favorites now. The tides show us a different beach and all that it holds, each and every time we walk it (and you can for miles). Our 2013 stay provided such beautiful weather, we hardly left the property. We were on the beach every day and had it all to ourselves. Our closest visitors were boats and loons. Nothing has ever been more relaxing. We took a few quick trips to Machias, Lubec and Eastport for shopping and food... and a must do each year is West Quoddy (light & trails). We plan to tackle the whole Cutler Bold Coast Trail this year - worth the exercise for the most amazing views... but only if we can drag ourselves away from Eastview!! Thanks to Debbie and Stu we get to spend a week in heaven every year. The place is just... magical... and medicinal. It never disappoints! In fact, it gets better and better each year!

A Week is not enough

  • 5 of 5
We enjoyed our week (June 25 to Jy 2) at the Eastview Cottage between Jonesport and Machias (Ma-Chi-as). We had great Sunrises on several mornings starting at 4:15am, and enjoyed the afternoon views of Englishman Bay from the back patio where we saw hundreds of lobster floats and Eiders (ocean ducks). We ordered Blueberry rolls and lobsters from the neighbor, which were fantastic.

At low tide you can walk a long ways in either direction on the beach at the cottage. You can go to the nearby Sandy River Beach anytime - the public access trail to the beach is off Sandy River Rd and starts at 44°34'35.16"N 67°34'14.81"W.

We took the Puffin trip to Machias Seal Island with Capt. Andrew Patterson of Bold Coast Charter Co out of Cutler. This is the time of year that Puffins are feeding their chicks. We saw about 20,000 Puffins, 6000 Razorbills, 1000 Common Murres, and 100 Bridled Murres, along with Harbor and Gray Seals, Gulls, a Great Shearwater, several Wilson’s Storm-petrels, and flocks of Eider Ducks. Andy has the only US permit to land on the island to see the Puffins, which is by far the best way to experience the birds. Beautiful Trip!!!

On Saturdays there are numerous flea/antique markets on US-1 between Bath (near I-95) and Machias. We thought they had good items at reasonable prices.

Eastview Cottage has everything you need for cooking, but we mostly fixed sandwiches (except for the night we boiled lobsters). The local restaurants have great lobster rolls, clams, shrimp. scallops and haddock. My personal favorite was a steak covered with shrimp and crab Alfredo at the Blue Bird Ranch in Machias. We also liked their desserts – the Mud Flat Cake and Blueberry Cake were fantastic!!!

This area is not saturated with tourists like Bar Harbor and southern Maine. There is still a lot we would like to do on another visit.

Thanks Debbie

We'd go back again and again

We'd go back again and again

Although it looks lovely in photos, in real life this cottage is even prettier in person. Photos and descriptions don't really do it justice. Spacious and clean, the home is a great base of operations for people who enjoy exploring the Maine coast, from Acadia to the easternmost edge of the state. Debbie has stocked the house with all kinds of magazines, maps, and guides to the area so you'll never run out of things to do. Her own guide offered invaluable advice and helped us make the most of our time downeast.

We spent a lot of time in the cabin as we experienced rather inclement weather during our week at the end of June. We were very comfortable there, our dogs loved playing in the bay, and we found everything we needed in the well-furnished kitchen to make great dinners every night with treats we picked up from the neighbor, a lobsterman whose wife is a wonderful baker. While it rained outside, we were warm and cozy in the house, which could have easily slept another 4 to six people.

We would definitely go back!

Wonderful vacation spot

  • 5 of 5
We fell in love with this place! The sunrises were unbelievable and I couldn't stop photographing them each morning! Even on cloudy mornings, it was astounding. The sunsets on the other side of the house were equally impressive. We watched the lobstermen harvest our dinner for that evening; we rented kayaks and paddled around the islands; we made several easy daytrips, including one to Campobello in Canada; we visited the West Quoddy lighthouse and Roque Bluffs; we walked the beautiful beach at low tide, including the sand bar that we named 'Seagull Bar' because there were so many seagulls on it; we hiked on Great Wass Island; and we relaxed in the peace and quiet! The house itself is great - there is not a single thing missing - more than enough dishes, silverware, lobster pot, baking pans, crockpots (!), books (I brought books with me but found I was reading the ones on the shelf instead!), games - you name it - it was there, including extra sheets for each bed, plenty of towels, and a washer and dryer! Also, plenty of information on the area and things to do if you can drag yourself away from the incredible view right in your backyard. Impeccably clean and neat and impressive from the moment we opened the front door. I would absolutely recommend this property to anyone who loves nature and is interested in experiencing the "real Maine." There are a couple of towns close by where you can buy groceries or go out to eat (you must try Helen's in Machias for their homemade blueberry pie - mmmmmm!), but if you're interested in a lot of action, this is not the place. However, it's not desolate either. There are neighbors on both sides and all along the road, but we only met up with one person on the beach. Not a good road on which to ride bicycles, but there are areas around where you can go. Still, it would be better to bring kayaks rather than bicycles if you have to make a choice. Very friendly area - I can't say enough good things about it. I hope we can go back. Our party consisted of six adults and one small child - plenty of room and plenty of "alone" space. The design of the house really monopolizes on the view - sliding glass doors in two of the bedrooms, large windows in the "bunkroom," a large window that you can see through from the loft bedroom, and nothing but windows in the great room. We didn't want to leave!
