Overview

Hawi Studio Rental Photos and Description

Studio, Studio + Convertible bed(s), 1 Bath, (Sleeps 4)

Yes, the Big Island does have a north shore, SHHHHHH! This unique spot on Hawaii is unspoiled by excessive tourism, traffic, and VOG (volcanic pollution). Come have an island experience the way locals enjoy it! Gaze across the channel at the island of Maui as you breathe in the clean clear air courtesy of the trade winds. Feel the aloha spirit in the quaint small town of Hawi which borders the tropical and dry sides of the island. The north shore of Hawaii is for people who want to go beyond the high priced hotel experience and enjoy the islands the way they have been enjoyed for generations.

From Hawi you can go ten minutes west to dry heat and swimming, fifteen minutes east to lush tropical jungle and the wild Pololu Valley, twenty minutes south to the summit views from the cool Kohala Mountain top or you can walk into Hawi town and enjoy a cup of coffee with the locals then get a massage or shop for locally made treasures in our artist filled community. After a fresh fish dinner at one of the local restaurants you may even be lucky enough to catch some live music by one of the many famous musicians living in our town.

Enjoy the benefits of a kama'aina (local) host, and use our years of island experience to help you get the most from your island stay. Having an on site host opens a vast potential of possibilities that most people never get to experience while visiting Hawaii.

Travelers who come to North Kohala should know that they are forgoing the hot dry heat and touristy areas to be out in the country. Most of North Kohala is very jungle like and therefore includes all animals and critters found in such locations. If geckos, pigs, spiders, mosquitoes, wild turkeys and roosters trouble you, then North Kohala is not for you.

About The Owner

Our family has deep roots in the Hawaiian Islands. While we certainly do not consider ourselves native Hawaiian, we can however, trace or family back to the early 1900s in Hawaii. Jim's mother grew up in hawaii and spent years in the entertainment industry on Oahu, singing and dancing for the early visitors to the islands.

The aloha spirit is very alive in our family as well as the town of Hawi where we chose to settle down. We invite you to join us and experience the warm hawaiian sun and an even warmer aloha!

The Owner purchased this studio in 2006

Why The Owner chose Hawi

It was amazing; we rounded the the tip of the island and went from rain-forest to desert. What had been a tropical deluge of over 3 inches per hour had given way to sunshine and an amazing rainbow. It was in the magic of that 5 minutes that we decided that the big island was the place we wanted to live. It was 3 months later when we became the owners our Hawi home.

What makes this studio unique

The greatest benefit of choosing to stay with us is called aloha. What do you need; adventure ideas, a meal prepared, your shopping done prior to arrival, a ride somewhere, more privacy? You name it and we can get it done for you. It is our goal that you have a perfectly relaxed and enjoyable vacation and then come back to see us again next year!

Girls getaway!!!

My three friends and I stayed in Jim and Leah's studio cabin for 3 nights and we loved, loved, loved our stay. It was raining hard when we arrived and Jim immediately greeted us with umbrellas and offered to unload our luggage. Their studio was clean, the beds were comfortable, and the location is located in a quiet neighborhood. Everything you need for cooking a meal at home is there. Our favorite part is the outdoor shower!!

To quote Jim, "You have to have Aloha (kindness) to see Aloha." We felt Jim and Leah's aloha during our entire stay.

We would stay here again!

Lynda (from Seattle)

p.s.: Be sure to schedule your stay through a Saturday so you can visit Hawi's farmers market and to eat Jim & Leah's yummy food at the Sol Kitchen. We ordered Leah's kombucha, their chicken salad and roasted pepper sandwich! Yum..yum...and good for you! So ono!

Owner's Response: Mahalo Lynda, Every once in a while we have guests who actually slow down enough on their vacation to truly see what a paradise we have here. We are glad that you were among that group of people. It's truly not the physical beauty of the place (although that is a nice plus) that make it a paradise, it's the aloha. When I said to you that "one must have aloha to see aloha" I was not using the word in one of its many narrow forms. I was using it in its broadest form: Aloha, love, affection, compassion, mercy, sympathy, kindness, sentiment, grace, charity; greeting, salutation, regards; loved one; beloved, loving, kind, compassionate, charitable, lovable; to love, be fond of; to show kindness, mercy, pity, charity, affection; to venerate; to remember with affection. MAHALO FOR SEEING! THIS IS THE PARADISE WE HOPE ALL OUR GUESTS CAN SEE!

What a lovely little hideaway this is! Do you dream of living like the Big Island natives? Serendipitously chosen as our second rental during our 9-day, Big Island vacation, we were finally able to wind down and slow down enough to get a really good whiff of aloha. The pluses of staying here are almost too many to list. Our hosts served us a fabulous Puerto Rican Breakfast plate (tastes like ono loco moco, but without gravy and with savory beans instead) at the Saturday Farmer's market, where you can watch local life drift by as you enjoy your meal. Do you like all things organic? Hey...this is your place. We picked up some gluten free rosemary bread here that sent us directly to heaven with no stops in between...and organically grown Kona coffee beans. Yep...there's even a coffee grinder tucked away in your kitchen. If you grow concerned about only having a 1/2-bath, you'll also get equally unconcerned when you discover the secluded 3-way warm water shower in your front yard. Our hosts grow wonderful bananas; extra sweet and with a marvelous lemony tang; all free for the picking. Beautiful, little green birds pecked away at the top of a ripened papaya perched way overhead in a tree. One last peck, the morning of our departure, and the ripened papaya was ours. Oh my....what can I say...never had any papaya that tasted as wonderful as that one. If you are a sushi lover, then you must visit the Sushi Rock restaurant in Hawi...or...if East-West fusion is your thing, perhaps you should try the Bamboo restaurant voted the Big Islands' best several years in a row. Need some ice cream? Try the Tropical Dreams ice cream at the Coffee Mill in Hawi. We were wowed many times over. We hiked the Mo'olikini Heiau and King Kamehameha I birthplace and watched the waves crash along the North Shore, with whales spouting all the while. We saw the Pololu Valley lookout and walked 1/2-way down for an unspeakable view of the valley and North Shore cliffs. We had an incredible tour of Wai'pio Valley (took the Shuttle with Douglas) and had an amazing Vanilla Experience Luncheon and tour with Jim at the Hawaii Vanilla Co. We even caught the 8:00am Sea Quest boat out of Kailua Kona for 4 special hours of snorkeling and seeing the Kona coastline. And all of this from our "home" base in Hawi, this sweet little studio with the sweetest little family you'll ever meet this side of the Mississippi, right next door. Mahalo, Jim and Leah!

Experience Aloha in your Ohana

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I rented Jim & Leah's ohana for 8 nights. Being "laid back" Oregonians, we were comforted by the similar lifestyle shown by their family. From the sharing of organic produce from their property (i.e. bananas, papayas, herbs and eggs) including macadamia nuts from their orchard, you won't be disappointed. For an added treat, Jim & Leah prepare and serve a unique menu at their food booth at Hawi's Saturday Market. While we could expound further on the ideal location of their property, it was their family hospitality that made the difference in our memorable stay.

Great Getaway from the hectic life at home!

  • 5 of 5

We loved the peaceful serenity of this great little hideaway in Hawi. Close to family and our favorite beaches and an easy trek over the mountain to Waimea for groceries. The shower was one of the best experiences of my life...plenty of warm water in a true tropical garden setting. We also enjoyed the farmer's market in Hawi where our hosts serve an amazing healthy Puerto Rican Breakfast at their booth every Saturday. The islands are not new to us and we have been enjoying extended visits on a regular basis for several years, this little studio is exactly what we look for when we visit...Quiet, non-touristy, and a bit off the beaten path...we will definately consider this as our choice on our next visit!!!

We feel so lucky to have lodged here!!!

  • 5 of 5

When my husband and I started researching where to stay on the Big Island, we didn't have a lot of insight regarding options. We liked what we saw when we found this rental; the pictures, details, and reviews are what drew us in to this property. During correspondence, the owners seemed like our kind of folks. Well, we were right to follow our instincts--it was an awesome place to call "home" during our stay in Hawaii! The cottage is so sweet and comfortable. The property is simply beautiful. And yes, the outdoor shower is such a treat! And the owners are some of the coolest people ever. It was so easy to relax and take in all the beautiful elements surrounding us. As for location, we LOVED that we chose Hawi. There are so many sweet offerings in this part of the Big Island, not to mention the charm of the little town itself. There is a farmer's market right there, too, and we enjoyed many delicious treats and crafts. We feel so grateful and blessed to have landed here!! A superb cocoon wherein to find respite!

Don't want to leave!

  • 5 of 5

Aloha Family,

Don't want to leave - it was very restorative. We live in Kona and needed some country retreat. We enjoyed getting to know you and your family; eating at the market with you - food was fabulous; the outdoor shower was incredible! Loved the art and high end finishes - your thoughtfulness is seen in every inch to every corner in this hale. We will be back again!

A Hui Ho!
