Location: Downeast and Acadia < Maine < USA
Car: not necessary
Isle au Haut is a seven mile by three mile island served by mailboat (there is no car ferry). It has a year round population of fifty people with another two hundred seasonal residents. Acadia National Park makes up sixty percent of the island. It is Acadia's most remote area and best kept secret. A myriad of trails ranging from an easy seashore loop to a grueling all day hike start literally out the front door. In town, a fifteen minute walk, you can watch lobstermen unload their catches, buy groceries at the Island Store, see the one room schoolhouse, and explore the sleepy center of town. Bikes are provided, which will help you get to far off places like the pristine swimming pond. Cultural activities abound in the summer too, such as square dancing, lobster bakes, church services, the talent show, the Fourth of July Parade, etc. There are no restaurants, theaters or galleries, so bring some books and your hiking boots!
