This elegant, 5 bedroom, recently renovated Victorian home and carriage house, in the Lewes Historic District, balances the original elegance of this home with the casual comforts of the beach. Your city blues will melt away when you arrive! The front porch overlooks historic downtown Lewes and provides an intimate sense of a more relaxed time in America. Gracious Stepping out the sliding doors of the kitchen, you enter the back yard with BBQ and herb garden which is surrounded with privacy fencing. The ground floor living area in the carriage house opens onto the lushly landscaped back yard through French doors that create a luxurious indoor/outdoor living area for intimate dining and entertaining on warm summer nights. The new canal waterfront park is right outside the back gate and parking area; the beach and all Lewes just steps away! For fall and winter visitors, there is a working fireplace!
More on the house: The carriage house has a rustic bedroom with through ventilation under the eaves and a tin roof on the 2nd floor. The 2nd and 3rd floor rear bedrooms in the main house provide views of the canal. The fireplace in the living room warms up any chilly evenings. Televisions with Dish TV and surround-sound are located in the living room and carriage house. There are VCR and CD/DVD players in both houses and in the attic for the kids; and wireless DSL and a printer/fax machine. The house has well appointed bedrooms, a galley kitchen just off the dining room with modern appliances, including a Sub Zero refrigerator/freezer, microwave, dishwasher and disposal. Customary kitchenware includes everything you need for boiled lobster or steak and salmon on the grill. Laundry is in the basement with entry from the garden. Bike parking rack,hammock, herb garden for your cooking next to the grill, and outdoor shower. There is dedicated parking outside the back gate for 2 midsize cars.
Entertainment: Weekly and seasonal parking passes at Henlopen State Park Beach are inexpensive You may walk or bicycle into the Park for free. Breakwater Harbor Beach (aka Town Beach; by the Dairy Queen) is free and a great spot for toddlers or others who prefer less vigorous swimming. Rehobeth and Dewey Beaches, the boardwalk, outlet malls, movies, and more restaurants are 5 - 15 minutes south on Route 1. These beaches offer the fun of the boardwalk in addition to good ocean swimming and lifeguards. Parking is generally readily available at street meters or in lots. Fishing, dinner cruises, rentals and whale watching are available just across the Canal. Cape May Ferry takes you across the mouth of the Delaware River to historic Cape May.
historic district: Lewes has a vibrant Historic DIstrict with lovely Victorian homes. Some are converted to businesses but most are lived-in.
213 and 215 Second St were built together for 2 generations of the same family; the houses share a wall but all rooms, systems and gardens are separate. The original carriage house (with its horse weathervane) is in our garden. A retired couple-former teachers- have owned 215 for many years and live there during the summer.
We fell in love with this Victorian home in the center of Lewes historic district where we and our children could walk everywhere!

It was really perfect for all 12 of us gathered for a blended family vacation...charmingly decorated, well-equipped kitchen, perfect front porch and walking distance to children's park, shops & restaurants. 3rd Fl bedroom great bonus for 4 and 6-year old and guest house perfect for daughter, husband and their dogs. Lovely, uncrowded beach 5 minute drive, great Saturday Farmer's Market, ice cream shop & wine store close by - what else would we need?!
The house in Lewes was absolutely wonderful! There are 10 of us who met here for our family vacation. The location couldn't be better. We spent a great deal of time on the front porch just enjoying the main street. Also made daily trips to the ocean which is nearby. Bill was great to work with as well. Hope we can go again.
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at this rental. Not only did we appreciate it's roomy Victorian style, but also had a great time exploring the surrounding restaurants, shoppes, and historical attractions. There was always something to do.. even if it was just spending quality family time on the front porch enjoying our favorite beverage. If we are ever in Lewes,DE again, we would definitely consider renting this house again.
This Victorian house was perfect for the style and location we wanted when staying in Lewes for my son's wedding in October '11. It felt like we'd stepped into a familar home where we were immediately comfortable with the lovely decor, kitchen and street. We had three families there for a week-end with several kids in their twenties who also had a great time. We had good family fun in the dining room with a pre-wedding breakfast as well as cousin sharing eveniing in the back courtyard with candles under the lovely trees. I would love to return sometime as Lewes is a fantastic little town. My only recommendation would be for a more serious vacumn cleaner be available to guests if they are to tidy the house before their departure.
Oh yes, I forgot to say how members of the family enjoyed sitting on the front porch talking, sorting photos, reading a magazine or waiting for the next 'event' of the week-end! Thanks Bill and Sallie!
This is a beautiful home with so much attention to detail. It is amazingly furnished with everything you could need. The main house has got so much room. There is a kids area on the third floor that was a big hit for our family. It also has the cutest Carriage House with a double bedroom upstairs. The landscaping in the courtyard is so lovely. The unit takes up one half of a Victorian house, but in no way does it feel like you are crowded by the neighbors. The front porch is a wonderful spot to sit and relax. It is a short drive to the beach and Cape Henlopen State Park. The bonus of being in town is being able to walk to all the shops and restaurants.
The house is located immediately adjacent to the downtown shopping and restaurant district with something for everyone - fine dining, clothes, antiques, art, fine crafts, toys, ice cream, wine and beer, two excellent coffee houses, furniture, housewares, beach supplies, post office, banks, and more - all within a few blocks. The gate in the backyard opens directly onto Front Street and the Canal, the new Canal Park, public tennis courts, and fishing and boating facilities. There is ample street parking in front of the house and two dedicated spaces in back. Walk to the town (bay) beach- perfect for young children or go to Cape Henlopen State Park ,a 5 minute drive and an easy 15 minute bicycle ride from the house. It is a truly fine National Seashore Park with a beautiful beach, concession stand, showers, bicycle and nature trails, a seashore education center for the kids, lifeguards, pier fishing, soccer fields and more. Lewes is a year-round destination!

Golf: Several nice golf courses are nearby (the closest is on Rte 1 North) and mini-golf on Rt1 1 South and in Rehoboth Beach.

If your desired time is available, we will hold the spot for you while we send you a lease and you return a deposit. The amount of deposit will depend on the rental and the time of year. Security deposit for summer rentals is generally $500.00; for off-season rentals, it is generally $300.00; amounts may vary depending on the size of your party.
Payment is usually accepted in the quoted currency (USD) unless the currency and the amount is specifically agreed in advance with the owner / advertiser.
