Perfect stay in a perfect home

5 of 5
Submitted: April 5, 2013 Stayed: November 2012
My wife and two kids (8 & 12) and I have come to Hawaii for the past two years and this is the perfect place to stay. We like to get away from the rain, cold and wet of Northern California right before Thanksgiving.

The house is beautiful and comfortable so it easy to turn off the stress. We enjoy hanging out on the lanai reading or playing games as a family listening to the surf and birds. The beach is so close that when the kids (or adults) get an itch for snorkeling/swimming we just go...no plan required.

The house has everything. Tons of snorkeling and swimming gear, fully equipped kitchen (my son decided to make the family dinner one night and had everything he needed), we love having a washer and dryer as it allows us to pack lighter and not worry about this aspect of traveling with kids.

We went up to Konacopia farms and were able to pick fresh fruit (in addition to what was delivered when we arrived) and even helped them process some of their coffee.

I have stayed at the resorts and feel I am captive and cannot escape....We were more stressed than when we arrived so we look for places to stay that are close to town but not in the center of touristville. This home is away from the tourist grind but close enough that you can hit Kailua-Kona within 30 minutes. The house is located very close to two step which is a great place to swim with dolphins and turtles. It is also an easy drive to Ho'okena Beach, Volcano and and other tourist destinations.

In summary......if you prefer the sounds of the surf and the birds to the tourist luau below your hotel window this is a great place.

If you prefer to sleep with the windows open to enjoy the soft ocean breeze and the gentle tropic rain to an air conditioner running all night then this is the place to stay.

Beautiful house in a great location!

Elizabeth and Steve have equipped their home with anything you might need
during your stay; from boogie boards, beach umbrellas and chairs, snorkel
gear, beach towels, bbq, board games, ping pong, and a well thought out
kitchen. Which made cooking a joy. I don't necessarily like to cook, but
local, organic food is our goal when it comes to doing our part in
protecting our fragile planet. The welcome basket of locally grown fruit and
coffee was very much appreciated and enjoyed by all.

The house is an organic environment, cotton sheets, eco friendly cleaning
products and a they have no poison policy when it comes to bugs. We felt
right at home here.

The bay is peaceful and secluded from crowded touristy area, but close
enough to Kailua Kona, the volcano and other tourist destinations. We love
snorkeling at the monument, 2 step and Ho'okena Beach. The City of Refuge
shouldn't be missed, but skipping the cruise ship gift shops along the
highway and supporting local artists is a treat. Make sure you visit the
Potters Guild and say Aloha to Ina and Alysia for us. They are both gifted
artists and teach at local schools.

Beautiful home, but...

The home itself is beautiful. The woodwork is gorgeous and it is very well taken care of. It is also well stocked - two boogie boards, snorkel gear for two, beach towels, lots of kitchen utensils/place settings. The home is fairly spacious - we stayed with three children (ages 8, 11, and 14) and were quite comfortable. The master bedroom is a very nice size, and the two lanais (one upstairs wrapping around the entire house, a smaller private one upstairs) give extra space and comfort.

However, I wish we had known before we arrived that the house is directly adjacent to a local family who has setup a shanty town, including several camping tents, abandoned cars, and a rusted out boat in overgrown weeds. You can see one of the boats in the photos on the website, but unfortunately since that time the area has become overgrown and a bit of an eyesore. While you can see the bay (and the view is quite nice) from the master lanai, you unfortunately can't help feeling that you are staying on someplace far short of paradise. Typically we would sit out at night and be looking out over 5 or 6 cars, with people yelling at each other and dogs barking. We didn't feel unsafe, but it was not at all peaceful.
Owner's Response: Thank you for your comments regarding the beauty and comfort of Manini Point House, and also for expressing any concerns. How sad that your week was not peaceful! In response to your concerns: The neighbor's two tents have been pushed back. I was disappointed that this guest did not call me and let me know that there were disturbing noises at night. I am happy to call our neighbors, a lovely Hawaiian family. Their dogs are usually put in a kennel at night. It is a beach community, and active during daylight hours with folks heading for the beach or other adventures but nights are usually blissfully quiet with just the sound of the ocean waves lapping the shoreline nearby. This guest was traveling with 3 small children which may have also detracted from an otherwise peaceful week in Hawaii. :)

Great vacation home at Kealakeua Bay

This home in Captain Cook was a great vacation spot. We are a family of four and found the Mannini House exactly as shown on the website. The views from the Master bedroom are fabulous with water views from most of the upstairs windows. The home has beautiful and comfortable furnishings. We enjoyed the expansive deck - perfect for relaxing with a good book or birdwatching. Great snorkel spots are just a short walk from the house and a nice family park nearby. We enjoyed the residential setting of this home and felt a part of the neighborhood soon after we arrived. It is located about 30 minutes south of Kona - a nice distance from all the busy hotels.

Great Vacation House

5 of 5
Submitted: March 3, 2012 Stayed: February 2012
We recently stayed at Manini House for a week. It was our first time to Hawaii and we weren't sure what to expect. We were looking for something off the beaten track, away from the big resorts, but close to great snorkeling and kayaking. Manini House was perfect. We have two teenagers who like to be active and then nap--the house was perfect for both. The house is fully stocked, very clean, and just beautiful! Each bedroom has its own bathroom, the tv has cable, and the kitchen is large and fully equipped. The house has a wonderful lanai where we spent many hours eating outside, relaxing, reading, and listening to the waves. The upstairs bedroom is the most beautiful part of the house with exposed beam ceilings, windows on all sides, great views of the ocean, and a luxurious shower. We fell asleep listening to the waves and woke up to a cacophony of bird calls. From the upstairs deck we could see whales, spinner dolphins, and the beach. We walked the two minutes to Manini beach and went snorkeling---fantastic numbers of beautiful fish right there!! We also walked 10 minutes, past the wharf, to a man who rents kayaks for $40/day. He was very nice and the launch was always exciting (but safe). We kayaked to captain cook monument and took turns jumping off the kayaks to snorkel. Again incredible fish. On the way back, we saw a pod of spinner dolphins..spinning and just cruising around our kayaks. We took walks to another beach and went running on road 160 which is a quiet two lane flat road great for a run. The house has everything you need for the beach --boogie boards, beach chairs, a beach umbrella, beach towels, etc. There is a fun ping pong table under the house too. We drove to different beaches for paddle boarding, night snorkeling with the manta rays, and boogie boarding but were always glad to come back to peaceful Manini House for cool drinks on the lanai and relaxing sounds of the waves hitting the shore. We have rented many houses through VRBO and this one is the best so far. Its great for a family, lots of space, very clean, well equipped, and looks exactly like the pictures. If you like to be away from the big resorts and big crowds, and like to snorkel and swim in the ocean..this is a great place to vacation. When we arrived we were welcomed with Konacopia coffee and fruits and a pretty orchid plant...which was a nice way to arrive. We highly recommend Manini Point House and would come back in a heartbeat.
