My name is Karen Floyd & was born in Honolulu, Hawaii in 1953. My parents lived on Paki Ave in Waikiki then. Am of Portuguese ancestry. My great grandfather sailed from the Azores in the late 1800's, they were some of the original immigrant agriculturalists that had immigrated to Hawaii. My grandfather had 80 acres of land in S. Kona here on the BIGI of Hawaii and grew and sold Kona coffee. That makes me the 3rd generation born and raised in Hawaii. Growing up here am familiar with much Hawaiian culture and have lots of love & nostalgia regarding Hawaii, it's in my heart & soul. When a visitor chooses to stay at A #1 Volcano Hapu'u Fern Cottage they will experience the true spirit of aloha and Hawaiian hospitality from a local born Kamaaina. We do our best to make a guests BIGI of Hawaii holiday a memorable one.
Karen Floyd purchased this cottage in 2003
This property was ideal as it was walking distance from my home and I'd be the primary caretaker. If a guest needed anything they could be assisted ASAP. Liked the property where A #1 Volcano Hapu'u Fern Cottage is situated as it's surrounded by an ancient Hawaiian forest with enormous hapu'u tree ferns taller than the house and many other indigenous trees, plants and flowers, making it an experience of a lifetime for visitors. It's really the old Hawaii that most tourists never get to see and feel. The historical Volcano Village where the cottage is located is also a bird sanctuary for the native Hawaiian birds, the air is filled with bird songs. The area around the home is undeveloped making it very private, you cannot see another home from the premises. The ultimate indulgence is to sit in the hot tub sipping on a favorite beverage and experience the sights and sounds of the Big Island of Hawaii in Volcano. We refurbished the cottage for four months prior to renting it and made sure it had all the modern amenities main land and foreign guests are used to of having, yet the decor is vintage island style furniture and there's also a lava rock surround with a wood-stove giving you that old Hawaii feeling. Growing up in Hawaii am very familiar with the way local homes and estates have been designed and decorated throughout the different eras. The home has also continued to be kept ultra clean and much attention is given to detail, everything needed is at ones finger tips. It was our aim to please and make a guests stay a happy and comfortable one.
We felt A #1 Volcano Hapu'u Fern Cottage was ideal for visitors as it is six minutes to the entrance of the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. It's a minutes drive to restaurants, deli, two mom and pop stores and the United States Post Office. It's also within close driving proximity to many world famous beaches (Green Sand Beach, Punalu'u Black Sand Beach and Kalae South Point the most southern point of the United States) waterfalls (Rainbow Falls and Akaka Falls), parks and gardens (Liliuokalani Park and the Panewa Zoo). Not to mention guests would be able to reside on the slopes of Mauna Loa and could drive to Mauna Kea (two of the tallest mountains in the world).
Mahalo for a wonderful stay! We were very active and enjoyed all of East Hawaii. We hiked Kilauea Iki Trail (highly recommend) and Mauna Ulu trail to Pu'u Huluhulu Cone, drove to the end at Chain of Craters then watched the Lava lake glow from the Jagger Museum. Had a great dinner at the Kilauea Lodge. Today we did a helicopter tour w/Safari, Hilo Farmers Market then down to Pahoa & snorkling @ Kapoho Tide Pools (also recommend) then swim at Ahalanui. Pizza from Mike's NY Pizza in Pahoa. Yummy!

PS The house is lovely & beautiful! It made our visit even better. Hope we can come back!
This was an awesome place to stay. The property is easily found off of highway 11, and the managers are easy to reach for confirmation and directions. If you want peace and quiet and time alone with your special someone, this is the place for you. Every morning we were greeted by the sight of wild birds eating from the bird feeder and pheasant wandering around the property. A beautiful yard landscaped to perfection. Cool clean air outside, warm and wonderful decor inside. We were just amazed at how beautifully kept everything was. There's also a hot tub and an outdoor grill should the mood for soak and a steak strike you. My husband and I loved it. The fireplace was wonderful, especially since the weather is so cool up there. Also, the appliances look like new and there is cookware provided. The continental breakfast had so much variety. Fruits, English muffins, waffles with guava jelly and butter were all included, along the best coffee ever! This place was wonderfully stocked. We were just a few miles from a romantic dinner at the Volcano House. This place was a couple's dreams come true. It's great for families as well, since there are two bedrooms along with an extra futon. The owners are extremely nice and helpful. They totally made our stay so comfortable, and since it was our anniversary we got a bottle of champagne to celebrate. We were treated like royalty, and couldn’t ask for more. The house is about 30 minutes out of Hilo, where you can go shopping and eat. It's close enough and yet far enough were you get the comforts of stores and the seclusion of the country. It made our 5th anniversary unforgettable. We would definitely recommend this place to a friend or relative and we will definitely return.
My wife and I stayed at the Hapu'u Fern Cottage at the end of February 2015 and absolutely loved the entire experience. Karen was extremely generous, friendly, helpful and working with her was a breeze. The home was very private, clean and the hot tub was really nice after a day hiking around Volcano National Park (which is located about 5mins. away by car). I would highly recommend this place if you are looking for a quiet, relaxing getaway.
We had a great time exploring the park (six minutes away) and had a lovely place to come back to.
The cottage was wonderful, living up to the reviews we read. Karen was extremely helpful before and during our stay. The location is absolutely perfect for exploring the National Park. The cottage was well appointed, clean and had all the amenities you could want. We were very pleased and hope to stay there again. It is perfect for couples or families. Mahalo Karen for the hospitality and all the information on local attractions.
The Hapuu Fern Cottage is a renter's dream. The owner met us at the house with the key and to go over several things about the property. We especially appreciated the waffles, pop tarts, and fresh fruit she provided for our breakfasts. Everything was gorgeously decorated and scrupulously clean. It was a very short drive to the Hawaii Volcano National Park - although a fairly long drive to swimming and snorkeling beaches on the west coast. We would highly recommend the Hapuu Fern Cottage if we had any family or friends going to the Big Island.
Even though the cottage is less than 30 minutes from the Hilo Walmart, it is up in the high country very near the entrance to Volcanoes National Park. The cottage is super clean, spacious, and beautifully decorated. Large and lush hapu'u ferns are all around. We ate at two fancy restaurants while we were there, and we preferred the Kilauea Lodge over the (newly opened) Volcano House. Of course the National Park was the main attraction. Amazing! Don't forget the Akatsuka Orchid Gardens just down the road. We also spent much of Sunday at the New Hope Christian Center which was also amazing.
We highly recommend the Hapu'u Fern Cottage.
