The Charles House sits high on Monhegan Island which is located 12 miles off the Maine coast. It is a place of extreme beauty and peace. The island is about 1 1/4 miles long and 3/4 mile wide, and hosts 17 miles of hiking trails which lead through beautiful Maine woods out to high cliffs that run the length of the east side of the island. Two thirds of Monhegan are held in a natural preserve, to remain forever wild. In the Spring and Fall seasons, Monhegan is a destination for birdwatchers who come from around the world to witness the migration of many species of birds on their way north and south.
