The small historical island of Hydra has fairly been considered as one of the most popular travelling destinations around the world. Access from Athens is very easy and takes about on and a half to two hours by hydrofoil or car. Hydra has a long naval history which is immediately apparent as one arrival on the islands due to the old beautifully restored mansion, museums and cannons.
The port of Hydra is located in the town of the island, that is spread over two hills, full of traditionally built houses (building rules on the island are extremely strict in order to maintain the unique atmosphere of the island throughout time). Apart from the natural beauty and history of the island, what makes it truly unique is that on wheeled vehicles are allowed, this includes of course cars, motorbikes, but even bicycles. All transportation is done by foot, donkeys, or water taxis, that take visitors to the islands secluded beaches. This fact makes Hydra unique in the sense that one gets the feeling that time has stopped. It is the perfect location to relax, slow down and enjoy a long lost way of life.
