This was our first time renting this house and I'm sure it won't be our last. The view from the house was beautiful during our winter stay. The house was spacious and clean and a short drive from Shawnee peak. The kitchen was nice and had plenty of pots and pans for us to use and a dishwasher as well! The owner was also quick to respond with any questions and concerns we had while staying there. We will definitely be considering a stay during this coming summer!
This was our fifth summer here and our family has grown to love it more every year. The location just can't be beat. Highland Lake is beautiful with only a moderate amount of motor boat traffic - while the adults prefer the quiet, the kids loves the waves the boats make, so it's a happy compromise. Our family loves to kayak, swim, fish (caught a new family record of 30 white perch in one day this year!), play on the beach, relax on the deck, make s'mores around the beach fire-pit, and just enjoy the beautiful surroundings. The sandy private beach is perfect for young children and a rarity on this lake. Multiple small islands around the lake are great fun to check out too. We find so much to do at the house and on the lake that we rarely leave the property except for trips to the grocery store.
While the railings upstairs are a concern for small children, we've had a number of toddlers here over the years without issue. We've brought baby gates and had strict rules about no kids upstairs without adult supervision. To meet the 10AM check-out time Saturday morning, we bring our own bed linens (even though there are plenty at the house) so there is less laundry for us to deal with before leaving.
The new deck looks great and is a perfect spot - whether sipping our morning coffee as the mist rises off the water, taking a lunchtime break from swimming, or enjoying a glass of wine as the night sky settles over the lake and mountains - we enjoy the view any time of day.
The setting feels nicely secluded and yet you're only minutes from easy shopping, restaurants, and movies in downtown Bridgton. The owner has always been a pleasure to work with and responsive to any concerns or questions we've had.
My husband and I, with our five children (age 2-12) and my parents, stayed at this house for our two week vacation. There was great communication with the owner prior to our arrival. The cons: (1) there was a huge ant problem. After killing 20-30 ants a day and having them get into everything, including the stove and microwave, we finally went out and bought our own ant bait stations which cleared the problem up. (2) The gaps between the posts in the second floor railing, which runs the whole length of the house and overlooks the first floor, are about 8-10 inches apart. My 2 year old could easily fit through them and could have fallen down to the first floor. Even my 4 year old could have squeezed through. Not child safe at all! (3) The dump pass that was left for our use was expired, so we were turned away from the dump. We had to hunt down the town office and buy our own pass. (4) the dryer doesn't dry well at all! (5) the early check out, 10 am, along with the requirements to have all the sheets washed, dried, and folded, along with the dryer not working well, meant we choose to end our vacation a day earlier. There is no way we could have been out the door by 10 am. An option to pay more for laundry services would have been nice. (6) There was no light bulb in the frig when we got there, so we had to buy one. (7) There were no fans to be found, so we had to buy a couple to get through the hot nights. (8) The pool table was nice, but there was no cue ball to play a game. (9) The wifi went down several times and we had to reset it. Not a problem for some people, I'm sure, but hubby needed to stay connected with work.
It wasn't all bad. The beach was wonderful and the kids spent every day in the water. The lake has a nice gradual sandy bottom which was perfect for the kids. They even caught some fish from the dock! The views were wonderful, we had great weather! The location is great, we traveled to North Conway several times, and made the trip to both Santa's Village and Storyland.
All in all, it was a nice vacation and we got our security deposit back in about two weeks. And in all fairness, we never contacted the owner about the problems listed above, it was easier to fix them ourselves. If the property were more child safe, we would probably return for another stay. I would recommend this property to families with older children (5+), or couples traveling alone. Bridgton is beautiful and worth checking out.
We had a wonderful time at this rental house this July. We had 4 adults and 5 kids and we really felt like the house was perfect. It was much more spacious than we even expected. We looked at a lot of possible vacation homes on Homeaway before booking and a deciding factor for this one was the sandy beach and gradual entry for the kids. The house was exactly as advertised and the beach was great! Highland Lake is a nice lake too. Powerboating is allowed but we didn't bring one and enjoyed the paddle boat and double kayak provided as well as our own canoe. Highland Lake is a relatively quiet lake which is perfect for non-motorized boats. Fishing was great in the evenings right around sunset. The house was well equipped as well. Downtown Bridgton is very close by and we walked there a few times including for the 4th of July duck race and parade! We would definitely recommend renting this house if you have the opportunity - book early!
My whole family & I were very pleased with this rental. We've learned from the past few years renting in the white mountain area as to what our needs would be & this was it! Also in the past other owners have mislead us a bit on things like the distance the water was from their rental homes or location to nearby attractions but not this time. There were a few small issues with this rental but it's hard to please 100% of the people 100% of the time. There was no working vaccum to clean floors with & the floors quickly got covered with lake beach sand, that was bothersome especially when the sand traveled into beds from feet. The back yard itself leading to the water could be landscaped & manicured better. Check out time seemed a bit early also (10am) only because of having to launder all sheets & have folded & put on beds at departure. It was a close call with 12 people but in a mad dash we did it.
We were a party of 5 adults & 7 kids ages 18,14,14,8,6,4 & 4. This was the perfect place to be with the varried age range. We do own a boat & that made a huge difference I think, with out it the older kids may have been board after the first few days. The fishing was great too, for the kids & adults. In all we really had a wonderful, relaxing time at this large, beautiful home. This may just be the house we'd like to return to year after year!
Charming downtown Bridgton is only a 10 minute walk (1/2 mile) with galleries, shops, antiques and craft stores, quaint restaurants and a fabulous library. There's also an old-fashioned drive-in theater right in Bridgton. Enjoy three local golf courses that are nearby. Drive only 10 miles and spend a relaxing afternoon on the 'Songo River Queen' on Long Lake. Or enjoy one of the many restaurants on the Naples Causeway. You can even take a plane ride right from Long Lake and see all the local scenery.
There's outlet shopping in nearby tax-free North Conway, New Hampshire which is only 30 minutes away. This is a great area for water skiing, sailing, canoeing, tubing, jet skiing and kayaking. There is a public boat ramp (which is free) only half a mile away. Perfect location for skiing and snowmobiling. 5 miles to Shawnee Peak/Pleasant Mountain and 30 minutes to Sunday River.
