Dining:

Coastal Maine is famous for lobster which is prepared in many delicious, creative dishes- or traditionally steamed & savored with melted butter. It's possible to buy them right at the lobsterman's co-op on the docks down town, bring them home cooked by them, or live for you to cook yourself! Don't skip steamed clams! If oysters are your thing, don't miss our locally cultivated (& shipped all over world) oysters- especially those from the Damariscotta River.Or join a boat excursion to Cabbage Island for an authentic lobster & clam bake!

Restaurant's that we frequent and enjoy include: Rocktide (on Atlantic Ave, East side of the harbor), McSeagulls (on Pier One,live music 7 night's), Dunton's Doghouse (Sea St), The Ice Cream Parlor (Pier One by McSeagulls), Robinson's Wharf and Pub (on Southport Island, just over the bridge).Good pizza: Village House of Pizza, across from Hannaford. Le Garage in Wiscasset is an old favorite, consistently good with a clever chef and the menu changes. In Damariscotta we haunt King Eider's Pub:Great crab cakes, but everything is very good, colorful too! Hit Route One North & head for Moody's Diner in Waldoboro for classic good food all day & night.

Boothbay also offers other cuisine: authentic Italian (chef summers here but is from Italy) Italian, Vietnamese, Chinese, tapas, traditional American and even a few good pizza joints! Bars serve locally brewed beers, great chowders, fresh fish in a variety of ways. There's a newly opened harbor front oyster bar with locally harvested oysters known to be some of the best in the world, according to many chefs and connoisseurs. Many local eateries often host local musical talent and bands which can be heard on week-ends.

About Kim 207-837-0604. Phoning is best means of contact; email 2nd best. Thanks!

I consider Maine home since the majority of my life has been spent on the Boothbay peninsula. Having moved back here after college and corporate careers, I now have my own home & business (lic. massage therapist) here, just a few miles from the cottage. My two beloved West Highland Terriers are frequently with me; they are great ambassadors, who will eagerly greet you! When I am not working, I can usually be found in a garden! I thoroughly enjoy being outside, often tending our vegetable, flower & perennial gardens with our Westies at my side! My Mother, the owner of this charming property, worked as an R.N. while raising me as a single parent. Her love and hard work enabled her to buy this second home-- just a few miles from where I grew up! As such, we have been able to use and appreciate this home in all seasons for many years! I have memories of shoveling off a big area on the frozen lake, then a hole was drilled by auger, water was pumped up to flood the 'ring' and freeze smooth. We had the great skating parties! Of course, a bonfire was lit for warmth and festivity, marshmallows and more were toasted on the fire!! I also grew up water skiing on the lake! Mom taught many friends how to ski and put on quite am impressive show herself (a natural athlete!). Skiing here is long gone since laws changed and motors are restricted to 5 hp for fishing/trolling,but many years of happy times built great memories for us both. This is a very special place. So it is that we have maintained, managed and enjoyed this home and property together now for years. Currently I act as the manager for the cottage. We are obviously familiar with the region and are happy to be of assistance with ideas and recommendations. Plus,we live 'just down the road' so we can help if you need it while you are here or at the cottage! Come see for yourselves how lovely and enjoyable it is here, and why guests who have stayed with us rave about it! We believe you'll be glad you did!

Why Kim 207-837-0604. Phoning is best means of contact; email 2nd best. Thanks! chose Boothbay Harbor

Mom had a great vision when she bought this years ago! This property is well suited for us and our interests. We love the outdoors and are able to spend a lot of quality time here because we live so near by! She worked diligently to keep on this gem for us to have and enjoy and we are delighted to have it still! We don't intend to have that change!

Prior to owning this,it was a cottage my family rented for one summer. Little did we know that we were then starting to gather memories that we would build upon for decades to come! A few years later, after we had relocated to this region, the cottage came up for sale...the rest, as it's said, is history!

Winters we spent some of the time here ice fishing, keeping an eye on the flags from the comfort of the fire inside & an expansive view to the lake from the big picture window! For a few winters we were into snowmobiling,& we warmed up inside the cottage on many of those days as well. I've already described the glee of ice skating here-by day light & starry, moonlit nights!

I enjoy plants, nature, gardening, so this spot became another canvas to work upon.Spring time flowers and flowering shrubs here are lovely to behold; summer lilies, plants and evergreens are always calming to work among and see. But clearly the big draw to this wonderful lakeside retreat is for the prime seasons for enjoying the water, boating, and warmer weather.I attribute my early passion for swimming to many, many hours spent swimming in and across the lake. Later I channeled that love of the water into a long career as a serious competitive swimmer. Ultimately I became a five time State Champion swimmer beginning my freshman year at Boothbay Region HS. Our lives are such that we now choose to share this wonderful place with others by occasionally renting it. We've found wonderful guests who appreciate the ability to share it, & show great care and respect for the property. Plus it easily 'sells itself!'

What makes this cottage unique

While here on Big Knickerbocker Lake you will be immersed in nature and privacy. A small stream carries winter snow melt off the ridge and into the lake in spring time. Nestled among towering pines and oak, there is wonderful south and western sunset exposure from late morning 'til sunset. You are almost guaranteed to see more wild life than people on the lake! Take our canoe or kayak and paddle the perimeter, explore the second /'Little' Knickerbocker Lake! While viewing the lake from home or dock, you will gaze across the lake towards an unblemished waterfront--no development in sight! This location really is a well kept secret with minimal use, thankfully!

Our cottage has a large, wide fixed dock (on posts) for sturdiness and safety. We keep teak Adirondack chairs with hassocks on the dock, small tables and a bench for plenty of seating options. Bring your pole and feel free to cast a fishing line; the lake is stocked with Large Mouth Bass and Lake Trout by the local Fish & Game Club. A second surface dock makes for easy entry & exit into boats- or for swimming!

Inside we have comfortable seating in the living room with a large picture window that provides a better view than any big screen TV! Enjoy a real wood fire in our fire place to set a relaxing mood &/or take the chill off. The home is equipped with gas heat as well so you will certainly be comfortable and warm in any season.

This is a delightful gem that is clean, well equipped, and comfortable. We are happy to greet you, make sure you are settled in and help with suggestions of local interests. We have years of knowledge of the area and live close by. Please come see why so many of our guests raved about their vacation at our cottage!

Propane gas heating system is the primary heat source for chilly mornings or evenings... We always suggest that guests come well prepared with clothing for a broad range of temperatures and moisture (we are known for fog, and quirky, oft changing weather!), clothing that can be layered. Pants and sweaters may start the day but turn warm for shorts and tank tops later! It is always cooler on the ocean, a good 10 degrees. So even in the height of summer warmth, an ocean boat ride will be much cooler! My advice? Always leave shore with a jacket and sunscreen!
  • Parking for RV/Boat/Trailer ...
We have additional level parking on an upper lot above the cottage. Perfect for secondary cars, trailers or even an RV, all of which have been done by previous guests from time to time. This parking area is adjacent to a lawn where you could set up the badminton court or even horse shoes, toss a baseball or football!
  • Wood Fireplace ...
Traditional wood burning fireplace works wonders at comfort, ambiance and heat! This is a full size brick fireplace located in the living room and enjoyable even from the kitchen. Fire wood is readily available, possibly at a small fee.
  • Telephone ...
May be available but almost all cell phone providers are accessable from the dock as well as in the home.

More cutlery, various knives, flatware, various glassware (wine, beer, juice), plastic cups for outside use, bowls, dishes, pots of varying sizes, frying pans, muffin and cake bakeware than you'll likely use. Electric mixer and electric knife(!), oven mitts, grilling equipment, even spices! Everybody asks: yes, there is a BIG lobster pot, and a few other big pots for steamers and corn on the cob (although I've found that corn in wet husks cooks wonderfully at 75 seconds per ear in the microwave, in a plastic grocery bag for steaming ability!)
  • Refrigerator ...
Full size, double doors with a full size top freezer, ice trays and ice cube box. I'll have fresh cubes waiting for you upon arrival.
  • Microwave ...
Yes, large powerful Litton; works great if you are inclined to use microwave ovens.
  • Catering Available ...
We can provide you with a list of the Regions finest Caterers. Located just minutes away. We can make recommendations for you, and many options exist.
  • Kitchen ...
We have thought of everything. This cottage has a complete kitchen set up. Small eat in kitchen with dinette table that has expanding sides. Counter top toaster oven, regular toaster, a large microwave oven and coffee maker. New electric 4 burner cottage size oven but large enough to roast a 12 lb turkey! I've done it! Exposed cabinets, pantry cabinet, antique porcelain sink which has a wonderful window chest height view to the dock and lake! Doing dishes isn't so bad with this view!!

Bathrooms:
  • 1 Bathroom
  • Bathroom - toilet , shower , great water pressure in shower!
  • In 2009 we remodeled the bathroom with a spiffy new shower which has great water pressure! We, and many other guests, have enjoyed the spectacular hydrotherapeutic effect of this great shower with remarkable water pressure and hot water! Obviously there is a toilet & sink as well. This small room cannot accommodate a bath tub, so it's a standing shower unit for now. A window at eye level provides natural light, views to the south & lake, & fresh air without compromising privacy! We do ask that guests be conservative with regard to the 'grandfathered' septic system,as it is small & fragile--but does fine so long as it is not taxed! Showers drain to a different area-no worries or 'restrictions'- here. But with water being a precious resource, please be 'green' and respectful of our resources. We ask everyone and we ourselves to please use it as needed but not wastefully especially in light of 'thinking and living green.' Flush when you must! Thank you in advance. The planet thanks you.
Bedrooms:
  • 2 Bedrooms, Sleeps 4
  • Bedroom - 1 double , S & W exposure, overlooking lake, 10 ft from shore
    Bedroom - 2 twin/ single , S & W exposure, overlooking lake, 10 ft from shore
  • All beds rooms have a marvelous SW view overlooking the lake! Wool, cotton, & blended blankets, lap blankets/'throws'+ numerous bed & couch pillows are provided.Be lulled to sleep by sounds of the water, peepers & magnificent loons surrounding the house! Awaken to song birds in the surrounding forest, bullfrogs & crickets at the lake's edge. Ambiance abounds! Large picture window framing the lakefront is its own tapestry of changing art. You'll want to spend time relaxing on the dock, with coffee or wine, a book or binoculars.Gas heating system will warm the interior, plus you have a wood burning fireplace as well.Color TV provided with basic channels; radio and CD player.Cell phones have good reception inside the cottage, enhanced service from dock. Many great books of all varieties, board and card games. We encourage guests to refrain from electronic entertainment/distractions & to immerse themselves in the quiet of the lake, the wilderness of Maine & being together & simply 'being.'
Entertainment:
  • VCR
  • Audio Tape Player
  • Books for Kids
  • Radio
  • Books
  • Television ...
Good quality Panasonic 21' color TV with an antennae hook up for 5 basic channels! We do have it connected to a DVD/VHS player. In my opinion, this whole set up ought not even be there, but...it is. And it is all very basic for a reason! Many movies are at the cottage, both DVD & DHS.
  • Video Library ...
We provide about 20 VHS movies and their is a DVD/VHS player machine connected to a 19' color TV in the living room. We also provide some DVD movies but unfortunately many of them were taken from their cases and never returned. So, we are more scrutinizing of our library materials now and have a security deposit requirement for all guests partly for this reason. We like to think that future guests will be more trustworthy with our belongings.
  • Music Library ...
    Music CDs may be provided.
  • Games
  • DVD Player
  • Games for Kids
  • Books for Adults
  • CD Player
Outside:
  • Boat with Paddles
  • Outdoor Grill
  • Boat Dock
  • Water Skis

  • Deck / Patio ...
Basically the dock. This is separated from the cottage by a short set of stairs and six feet of land. The dock is 10' by 18' on fixed posts set into the lake, with ladder access to the water. Plan on spending time here--eating, drinking, relaxing, dozing and simply 'being.' You'll understand once you get here.

Suitability:
  • pets considered ...
New since last year! Small dogs ...less than 30 lbs, preferably not water loving breeds. Hypoallergenic canines are ideal. The dog MUST be trained to stay off furniture, obviously house-broken is required so that rules out puppies. Crate trained dogs are given favor! Sorry no cats. Too many allergic people, including me! A daily rate will be charged per dog.
  • pets not allowed ...
No cats or most other 'non-dog' pets. Large, water loving, heavy-shedding dogs are better left at your home, as they are not really appropriate for our cottage. Sorry! Too many people have allergies and no pets are allowed on furniture. Please feel free to discuss thhis topic with me.
  • children welcome ...
Kids will enjoy the natural surroundings, woods and lakefront. A solid lake shore provides wading shoreline near our docks, with stone steps to access this from land.
  • non smoking only ...
Please do not smoke any products in the cottage. If you must smoke cigarettes, we will allow it outside. Cleaning the area of butts (into the garbage basket, not the woods!)and ashes is required.
  • limited accessibility ...
It really depends on the handicap and the individual's degree of limitations. Please ask for descriptions, but many who may have a handicap can manage-- and HAVE-- to enjoy this home and location. As with all other obvious details which we provide, our goal is to be very clear about what our home and location are and are not! We want you to be happy with your choice of our cottage for your vacation. We always do everything in our capability to assure that this is done.

Perfect Place to Relax

4 of 5
Submitted: May 15, 2013 Stayed: May 2013
If you are looking for a quiet, relaxing place to unwind, this is a perfect place. Small and cozy in an ideal location. Property was very clean with most everything we needed. Watching the loons and ducks on the lake, taking the canoe out for a paddle, fishing off the dock or from the canoe, having a glass of wine on the dock. It's all great. Could not have asked for a more ideal spot. Would definitely recommend for two people. We'll try to come back as often as possible.

Fall stay at lake cottage 2012

4 of 5
Submitted: October 20, 2012 Stayed: October 2012
My wife and I spent a week at this cabin in early October. We had a great time. The trees were turning, the lake was beautiful, the weather was cooperative and the cottage was just what we were looking for. It's just right for two adults ( the bathroom is quite small) but it was clean, well equiped and in a beautiful location. Boothbay harbor was very close and convienient. We went to the Damariscotta Pumpkin Festival for multiple events and it was a blast. Don't miss it if you go in October. There is wonderful nature/forest walking nearby. Very beautiful area and Kim was very helpful and informative.

Perfect Relaxing Week!

5 of 5
Submitted: October 6, 2012 Stayed: September 2012
I highly recommend this cottage! We could not have asked for a more relaxing week. The dock was the perfect place to lay in the sun, read and enjoy the loon family by day and watch the bats buzzing around at night! The canoe and kayak were added enjoyments on this nice, quiet lake. This cottage had everything you could ever need. The location was perfect being close to downtown Boothbay Harbor if you want shop, eat at one of the many seafood restaurants or take a sail around the harbor. Kim and Lee were terrific hosts and really care about their cottage and guests. We did not want to leave! We will definitely be back.
