This uniquely charming property is part of an historic Maine summer estate. Built in 1897, the estate was a wedding present to a relative of President Taft. The Carriage House sits at the side of a large meadow extending to the water's edge with stairs leading to rocky ledges and a natural wading pool carved into the rocks. A sandy beach is a short walk down the shore, with lovely Birch Point State Park just beyond. The original Carriage House, tastefully converted to a guest house, sits privately apart from the main house. It has open space design with bleached barn board interior, provides all the comforts for today's vacationers. The Carriage House is fully furnished. A well-stocked kitchen, bath with shower, and open dining/living area are downstairs with two large bedrooms with skylights and cathedral ceilings upstairs.

The nearby mountains offer hiking for all levels. Enjoy the many festivals, theatre, and musical events in the area. Nearby Rockland and Camden offer fitness centers, movies, galleries, museums, shopping, antiquing, live entertainment and a variety of excellent restaurants whether you like eating lobster at a water-front picnic table, a Japanese box lunch or Thai take-out, or the pleasurable evening of a 4-star dining experience. Rain or shine, there's plenty to do!

Lovely time at Ledgemere!

It's only our first full day and we are having a wonderful time here. Very spacious accomodations and great views! My husband's blog has some great pictures he took last night and the day today. We found the Hannaford grocery in Rockland and it rates right up there with Wegmans in Rochester, NY! This is a great place to get away from it all without being so far from many great things to do and see. Thank you Jeanne and Paul for allowing us to stay here at this slice of Maine heaven!

We had such a wonderful time at the Carriage House; beyond our expectations. We stayed the week after Labor Day, and were treated to perfect weather--dry and sunny every day until the morning we left. The setting is magical. We loved sitting in front of the big bay window with our coffee in the morning, looking out over the heath to the water. The house was so cozy that we ended up spending a lot more time just hanging out there than we had intended to! Make sure to try the lobster roll at the 'Keag store--of the seven lobster rolls we had during our week in Maine, that one stood out as the best. We also had a wonderful day taking the ferry to Vinalhaven and walking through the nature preserve there. We hope to come back again next summer!

We had an excellent vacation while staying at the Carriage House at Ledgemere in September 2008. The accommodations were even better than we had expected. Rustic, warm, cozy, romantic, secluded, quiet, private, great views, etcetera. We highly recommend this place for an excellent home-away-from-home atmosphere to explore mid-coast Maine.

The Cottage at Ledgemere Estate was just what I expected, and more, from the description and photos shown on the website. In other words, it was a very nice, cozy, private, comfortable and fun place to use as a base to explore mid-coast Maine. We enjoyed it very much.
Owner's Response: I strive to make sure that any surprises are good ones. So, most of our guests say that the rooms are much bigger than they expected. And, I'm always a bit glad when guests have at least one day where the weather gives them a chance to just relax, cozy inside while the wind and water roars all around.

Fantastic

We spent a week at the Carriage House and it was a fantastic experience. The house is beautiful and very comfortable. It's just as advertised only better in person. The location is quiet, private, and easy to explore. The scenery and the shore are postcard quality. The owners are extremely friendly and went above and beyond to ensure we had everything we needed. We originally intended to bring our dog but changed our minds at the last minute (for reasons not involving this location), but I'm sure he would have had a great time also. The grounds are open and well taken care of. We (Mom, Dad, 15 yoa girl & 11 yoa boy) would stay there again without hesitation.
