The coastal bike trail is only one block from Fern Grotto Inn, and we’re conveniently located right on the Wailua River and of course, there’s plenty to do locally—we’re only one block from the pristine swimming beach at Lydgate Park, and Kapaa’s many stores and restaurants are just a few miles away.
The real attraction of Fern Grotto Inn is our secluded, vintage plantation cottages. Originally constructed in the 1940s and 1950s, our six cottages have been fully renovated with your comfort in mind while still retaining their authentic Hawaiian charm. We’ve outfitted each one with chic but cozy island-inspired decor.
Our cottages are surrounded by a lush, tropical garden, which, combined with the fact that our property is very quiet and private, creates the feeling that you’re in old-time Hawaii, far from civilization. It’s the perfect setting for your honeymoon or other romantic getaway.

OHANA HOUSE offers guests 1,200 square feet of luxury. Insider you’ll find three bedrooms, three bathrooms, hardwood floors, air conditioning, and a large kitchen and dining area. There’s also a small porch that overlooks the garden. Ohana House sleeps up to six adults and two children comfortably, but it’s also a great option for couples who want more space. Two bedrooms have queen-size beds, and a third has two twin-size beds. Two guests can rent Ohana House for $225 per night. Additional guests are $25 per night, and there is a cleaning fee of $175 to $225 depending on how many rooms are used.
COCO COTTAGE is perfect for small families (up to two adults and two children) or couples who want a little extra space. We’ve equipped the 600-square-foot cottage with every amenity you could want, including a full kitchen, air conditioning, and a private yard with a hammock, grill, and picnic table. Coco Cottage rents for $195 per night plus a cleaning fee of $100. It has a king-size bed and a sofa bed.
RIVER COTTAGE. Antique-style furnishings and naturally bright interior lend an elegant, romantic feel to River Cottage, the most popular rental on our property. This 500-square foot studio has its original hardwood floors in addition to air conditioning, a full kitchen, and a private lanai. River Cottage rents for $175 per night plus a cleaning fee of $100. It has a queen-size bed.
GARDEN COTTAGE. For exceptional views of the river and gardens, pick this lovely 400-square-foot studio boasting gorgeous hardwood floors, a queen-size bed, small refrigerator, coffeemaker, toaster, microwave, rice cooker, electric kettle and blender. Please note there is no sink or stove. The cottage rents for $145 per night plus a cleaning fee of $75.
CANAL COTTAGE A like our other two-person rentals, has an open layout and plenty of island charm. However, this cottage also comes with a full kitchenette and views of the river. It also has a small patio area just outside the front door that overlooks the gardens. It’s yours for $145 per night plus a cleaning fee of $75.
CANAL COTTAGE B at $125 a night plus a cleaning fee of $75, is one of our most budget-friendly rentals. It exudes plenty of retro charm and offers cozy accommodations for two people. This Cottage boasts a queen-size bed, a private lanai, and small refrigerator, coffeemaker, toaster, microwave, rice cooker, electric kettle and blender.
