About Emmanuelle and John LEDBETTER

We are a Franco-American family (with 3 children). We live in Santa Barbara, California and this is our little home in France.

Why Emmanuelle and John LEDBETTER chose Biarritz

We were first attracted to Biarritz by the surfing, but we settled there because of the charm of the Pays Basque.

What makes this apartment unique

We love to check the surf throughout the day from the Côte des Basques and enjoy the breath taking views of Spain. We also like to get coffee in the morning or sangria at sunset from the outdoor café & tapas bar on the Côte des Basques. We enjoy eating at the great Basque restaurant, the Cidrerie Hernani, down the street - a local favorite! Our bakery is Le Fournil du Rocher, two blocks away.

Cozy, perfect location for Biarritz

  • 5 of 5
We arrived at this property to find it as described, well appointed, located and perfectly suited to relax and reorganize after two weeks of traveling. Parking was a challenge, however after finding a spot we did not have to use a car because everything is located within walking distance. That includes beaches, shopping, markets, banks, post office, restaurants, and more.

The property was well equipped for preparing great meals from local market purchases. Although the unit has a good washing machine, it was just as easy to make a trip to the local laundry and shop the nearby market while our larger load was drying. Of course a daily visit to the boulangerie was a must. We found the Basque restaurant only a half block down the street to be our favorite.

It wasn't until we walked to the city center and encountered the busy crowds did we realize how nice it was to be away from the hustle and bustle of the resort crowd, only a short ten minute walk away.

The owner and property manager were helpful and their recommendations were excellent. The unit is perfect for couples or small families looking for a relaxing beach or coastal vacation. The park next door is perfect for small children, or quiet reading.

Thank you for sharing your wonderful apartment and we hope to be able to return soon.

Sweet

Great location and everything you need for a trip to Biarritz. Lovely park next door and easy walk to the beaches. We were a family of 5 with two large teenagers so we did find the small space difficult. Towels were difficult to dry. Storage space limited. No cooker only a hob. Would recommend for smaller family than ours. If it had rained for two weeks it would have been unpleasant! There is no outside space.

Ideally located for travelling without a car which was us, however car rental was easy and we took a trip to San Sebastián which was beautiful.

The owners and caretaker were lovely and very helpful.

The passing nightlife was noisy but you are in town so have to expect that - only affects one bedroom which was the master. Great indoor market within walking distance and loads of places to eat.

Perfect Location, Just as Described

  • 5 of 5
I can only echo previous positive reviews of this rental. We only spent 5 nights, wish we could have stayed longer. Everything was as described, location was perfect. Walking distance to anything in town and beautiful beaches. Lots of cafes nearby to eat at and also a well stocked regular market and an open air market for anything you need just down the street. We mostly cooked our own meals from food we bought at the market. Biarritz is very close to Spain, specifically San Sebastian, which has a quaint and beautiful medieval old town up on a hill. If you are interested in surfing there is a fantastic long, wide beach 5 minutes walking distance where you can rent surfboards and wetsuits. There are also numerous surfing spots south and north. We did have a car, which we were able to park in front of the home, but rarely used it since it was so easy to get anywhere we needed in town. There is minor pedestrian and street traffic that goes by the front door but it was not an issue. Owners are very responsive and easy to work with.

Perfect! Sweet Biarritz Home! I want to just move in permanently!!!

This experience was by far our best experience with a VRBO home! The owner, Emannuelle, lives in the US but is French SO she was able to guide us through everything perfectly. The property is darling - we ended up getting rid of the rental car as we could walk everywhere - grocery, shopping, beach, food, you name it's a couple blocks away - you look straight down the street from the front door and see the ocean! We love Biarritz and 20 yrs later I was able to take the kids back to our fave spot. The house is spotless, new kitchen (we cooked all but 2 nights in three weeks!), perfect bedrooms, quiet street, easy parking if you do have a car, washing machine, nice living room/dining room, all in all, perfect! We were so comfortable there we emailed the owner and stayed an extra week and a half! Her counter part was kind enough to drive us to the airport the day we left and he is very available should you have questions. We will be going back for hopefully a full month next summer!!! Loved it:-) You are close to Spain (20 min to San Seb); Hossegor is a cool beach town up the coast about twenty minutes, Bidart, St. Jean Luiz, all super close and fantastic. Couldn't ask for a better home, kinder owner & overall AAA+++ experience!

Great home base for Biarritz

  • 4 of 5
We spent 5 nights in this adorable and very comfortable flat. It includes a compact kitchen that has everything anyone could need. We really appreciated having the clothes washer! The beach and main town area were a very short walk. There were lots of cafes and other great places to eat (including an amazing Basque restaurant just a block away!) as well as a great bakery, market, and other shops nearby. There was a problem with the stove, but it was quickly and efficiently fixed by the manager-- both he and Emmanuelle were very responsive. The weather wasn't the best (a bit cold/rainy), but the heater worked well and the comforter on the bed was plenty cozy. We really enjoyed exploring this lovely town! We walked just about everywhere and also used the buses, which were very convenient. We'd definitely come back!

Biarritz Vacation

  • 4 of 5
Does the thought of renting an apartment from a private person in a city you have never been to in a country 5,000 miles away give you pause? Not with this apartment, the owner and local agent made this part of our vacation experience great: We were frazzled to realize that our drive from Paris to Biarritz coincided with the first day of the annual European vacation migration and that were going to miss our appointment to get the keys to the apartment by many hours and arrive late at night. After calling the local agent en route, using a combination of English and rudimentary French to communicate, we were comforted to know that he understood – “everyone in the whole world is coming here today” – and that he would be there to give us the keys when we arrived, we simply needed to give him another call when we arrived. Additionally, the owner provided lots of great tips on local restaurants and stores allowing us to quickly settle in.
The apartment has a great location: a short five minute walk west and you are at La Grande Plage, a long beautiful sandy beach great for swimming and surfing; a five minute walk north and you are downtown Biarritz where you can shop for groceries in the famous local food market (Les Halles), the local rotisserie or pick up your bread at any of the numerous local bakeries; and, a two minute walk down the street to the Cidrerie Hernani restaurant, which serves an amazing Basque/Spanish cuisine. In our short time there, we also managed a day-trip over the Pyrenees Mountains into northern Spain and the Basque city of San Sebastian and it was well worth the time with some very beautiful scenery.
The apartment itself has all the basics including a complete kitchen, a bathroom with shower, two bedrooms to sleep up to five and a family room with a sitting area and a separate dining table area and it was in good working condition. We simply walked in and started using it. For us, with three growing boys and widely varying tastes in foods, simply being able to cook and prepare breakfast and meals such as pasta without having to negotiate and compromise in order to go somewhere is of great value. We all quickly felt at ease in the apartment and made good use of it. With five persons in our party, the apartment got a little hot at times, eased somewhat by making good use of the fan as well as the window and entry door shutters.
