This house is beautifully situated on a fine beach on Casey Key - however, it is a long and boring ride from the real star of the neighborhood - Sarasota - with tremendous traffic. The swimming is grand and the appliances (clothes/washer and dryer, refrigerator) are fine - the dishwasher seems suitable for about 1 1/2 people - fast, efficient, but incredibly small. The lighting for those who want to read is pathetic. TV is fine, if complicated to navigate.
It could be a charming beach house if some care went into emptying out stuffed closets and drawers where an amazing amount of detritus turns up - old towels, sheets, electronic equipment - talk about Molly Magee's closet - you are scared to open the doors and drawers. The living room furniture does not beckon one to sit on - old, musty, etc. The house needs new furniture (particularly in the living room and porch which could be wonderful). New pillows much needed, mattresses as well. For the money, it is not a good value.
Owner's Response: This renter was obviously mismatched to our beloved beach house, advertised as casual and away-from-it-all. When she first complained, 4 days into her stay, I was indeed surprised. We never have bad reviews and Casey Key is a very special spot. We responded immediately. Her complaints were numerous and some fixable; we shipped overnight 2 new lamps and a standing lamp, we sent in the housekeeper to re-organize the pots and pans, etc.
We have had the furniture recovered within the past 2 years and constantly update. For example, the kitchen was remodeled in the fall of 2011. We made every effort to preserve the old Florida feel of this house built by our grandfather in 1940, and so it is that the modern dishwasher- a Swedish water saver- is innocuously hidden in the original cabinets, pulls out like a drawer, and is perfectly adequate.
But this renter also threatened to write a bad review unless we gave her back some money. We did not. Therefore, I was not surprised to see she posted a bad review.
This renter did not find the house online. She heard glowing reports about it from the November renters who live in her home town. They have already booked it for February 2013.
