Southwest Harbor House Rental Photos and Description

3 BR, 1.5 BA, sleeps 6

Lovely, very clean, bright, quiet 3BR rental house in Southwest Harbor's shore village of Manset. Please read the Guestbook comments- this is the most favorably reviewed house in Southwest Harbor. Fine views of Cadillac Mountain, Somes Sound and Southwest Harbor from sunny deck. Lots of windows for beautiful coastal light and air. House is set back 25 yards from the street and buffered by a dense line of arborvitae. Nice private and secure yard for play. Sleeps 6 in 3 bedrooms; 2 rooms with a queen bed in each, one room with 2 twins- great for kids, with a rocking chair for story time. Good closets in all bedrooms. One full bathroom with updated tub and shower, plus half bath in master bedroom.

Immense walk-out basement for all your sports gear. Furnished in a comfortable mix of new and old. Included are all linens & kitchen gear, gas grill on the deck, washer & dryer, wireless internet, a Roku box, 32 inch LCD, DVD and CD, stereo. Flower boxes and planters all around.

About the parking you see in the photos from the deck. It is a resident-only lot with very limited use for the residents of the Cranberry Isles; it is not a busy or active lot. Islanders park, ride the passenger ferry out, and return to the mainland when they need their car for a trip to Ellsworth or Bangor. I am confident you will not be aware of comings or goings. We have 9 years experience with it and not a single guest has commented negatively. And now, the trees have grown in and it is well-screened. We were disappointed when it was built in 2003, but it was needed for the year-round viability of the Cranberry Isles community. The unexpected plus was that removing trees really opened up the views of the water and the hills.

My family and I have been coming to Southwest Harbor and Bass Harbor since the early 70s. We appreciate the 'quiet side' of the island for its traditional Downeast villages, far fewer crowds, good restaurants, shops and services, and the Acadia National Park properties on this side of the island. I provide my guests with four pages of 'off the beaten track' ideas and suggestions to help them get an insider's view of this most beautiful part of Maine.

My number one goal is to provide you with the information you need to make the right decision on the house and location. Please email me with any questions or to check on availability. I'll reply promptly.

Guestbook comments from the owner
Hi Mark,

As we said we had a wonderful stay your Manset House. We were concerned about how our daughter in law and future daughter in law would think about it and everyone thought it was a great idea to make this an annual event, as we had hoped.

We are considering your Manset House, mainly because we are hoping Andy & Erin will be able to stay the entire week.

I will be in further contact regarding this. It was a plus to meet you in person and I am sure we will return to Manset House.

We have strong family ties to SW Harbor and the island. Our three great aunts worked as summer help in the 'cottages' of Bar Harbor in the 1940s and made the long trip from Boston by train, steamer and finally the coastal packet. My wife's family spent summers in SWH starting in the 70s, the same time I was in college in Maine and making my first camping trips to the island. We bought our Bass Harbor house on our honeymoon in '85 and have had the good fortune to spend a lot of our summers there ever since. Our 20-something children have now begun to bring their friends to MDI so we're well into three generations as 'summah people', as the real Mainers might call us. Come visit and be one too!

Mark Sullivan purchased this house in 2000

The great aunts I mentioned bought this house in the mid-70s. We enjoyed many fabulous visits and meals under their hospitality. We bought the house from them in 2000 and began to rent it in 2002. It's private, sunny, very clean and comfortable with very nice views.

The 'Quietside' of MDI has so much going for it! Bar Harbor is good for some things, but don't miss exploring the west side thoroughly- I'll provide you my private 'visitors' guide' with many ideas of what to see and do. The house is sparkling clean and bright, a great place to just hang out, or to use as home base for your adventures. Just about every guest comments they felt the house was very comfortable and homey. If we're booked this year for the time you want, make your plans with us for next year.

GREAT HOUSE, GREAT LOCATION

  • 5 of 5
My wife and I have been going to Mount Desert Island for a number of years now and we love the "quietside" of the island away from the hustle and bustle of Bar Harbor and the park loop road. This was our first stay at Mark's house in Manset and we enjoyed every minute of it. The house is comfortable, inviting and well-appointed. It has a spectacular panoramic view of Somes Sound and the surrounding mountains. There are other houses nearby, but essentially invisible through the wooded areas on each side of the property. Deer sometimes graze in the back yard. The house has a rustic charm enhanced by decorative rocks and tree branches fashioned into handles, hangers and hooks. Mark knows the quietside well and his suggestions for dining and activities are excellent. The boat trip out of Bass Harbor is exceptionally well done. A trip to RAT's up 102 near Town Hill for clams and lobsters or to Maureen's Manset Little Farm down the road from Mark's place for baked goods will introduce you to two of the area's more memorable characters. MDI is a great vacation spot and Mark's house is an ideal place to stay. We are returning in Oct.

FELT LIKE HOME

  • 5 of 5
We spent a fantastic time at Mark's Manset House last week. The house really felt like home away from home. It was so comfortable and had all the comforts of home, too. The view from the back of the house was absolutely gorgeous. I've never seen a night sky as beautiful as what can be seen from the deck. Right on the same road is Seawall. It is such a relaxing spot to watch the waves crash against the rock beach. Southwest Harbor was such a great place to stay, it's so quaint, but so convenient to all the attractions at Bar Harbor. Acadia was brilliant in all it's fall colors. A week was not enough time to see all there was to see in the area. We can't wait to go back for a visit again. Thanks, Mark, for your hospitality and for making our stay such a pleasurable one.

WONDERFUL STAY

  • 5 of 5
We had such a great stay at the Manset house. We were fortunate that our well-behaved dog was able to be with us for the week, as well as our less well-behaved toddler. We had great weather and actually enjoyed being on the "quiet side" of the island. There was plenty of family activities to do including things that were not expensive. We had a wonderful view and enjoyed eating outside on the deck and watching the water as well as taking evening walks around the neighborhood. We hope to come again next year, with another little one in tow and maybe some grandparents too since their is plenty of room! We highly recommend this house to anyone looking for a peaceful, relaxing stay at a "home away from home." It truly has all you could want and more!

MOUNT DESERT ISLAND TREASURE

  • 5 of 5
We all thoroughly enjoyed our stay on Mount Desert Island. We had no idea what to expect and were all blown away each day at the beauty surrounding us through rock formations, mountains, plants and trees and harbor scenes. There was so much to look at we would be tired of looking by day's end. Acadia National Park has breathtaking views and in it we saw peregrin falcons, deer, birds, and chipmunks. We saw whales, seals, eagles, puffins, and many other birds on short boat excursions. Riding a schooner was fun watching the crew hoist the sails.

Mark's home was a nice and comfortable place to unwind at the end of our busy days. It offers plenty of room to stretch out and a gorgeous view of mountains and a harbor from the back deck. It was peaceful to sit out there in the morning or evening. Everything was clean and fully furnished. His home has the perfect location to stay to fully experience this sensational area of Maine. Mark provides tips on trails and things to see near his home. Our stay could not have been better.

PERFECT RENTAL

  • 5 of 5
We had an opportunity to stay at the Manset House Memorial Day Weekend. Our entire group was very pleased with the house, the house was clean, comfortable, and well equipped with the everything we could possibly need. This was our first time to Maine and the owner Mark was helpful providing us with list of recommendations for the area. He was very easy and friendly to work with. Thanks again Mark! We are looking forward to coming back to the Manset House for future vacations & would highly recommend to anyone else!

OUR VACATION HOME...

  • 5 of 5
We have been visiting the Quietside for over 30 years and have stayed at a variety of wonderful homes...never more than once--until we stayed at the Sullivan's Manset house. I think that this year marked our 6th or 7th vacation there. We now think of it as our vacation home. It is just perfect for us. The house is just so comfortable and we love having coffee on the deck in the morning and drinks in the afternoon while watching the boats being hauled in at Hinckley's. Everything we need or want is there and always perfectly clean and in order. Mark is a wonderful host and is always available to respond to any questions. Well, now our secret is out...

Manset House is on quiet Rt 102A, just under two miles from 'downtown' Southwest Harbor. The house is in a quiet semi-residential area on a fully private 1.5 acre lot.

We are a two min walk to the Manset shore and its boat ramp, restaurant and marine businesses, notably the famous Hinckley Yachts complex. Also on the Shore Road are sailboat and powerboat rentals, the town dock for watching the fishermen and doing some yourself, and ferries to Somes Sound, Northeast Harbor and Little Cranberry Island. Several shore roads connect for a nice, low-traffic jogging or walking route. Less than five min. drive to Southwest Harbor stores, shops and restaurants.

This is the 'Quiet Side' of Mt. Desert Island, with world-class kayaking and sailing, biking, hiking trails, swimming in salt and freshwater. Acadia National Park attractions within a 10 minute bike ride from the house include Seawall, Wonderland, Ship Harbor, and Bass Harbor Light. Ten minute drive to Echo Lake beach.

Other Activities: My family and I have spent summers on the island for over 25 years. I have a 4 page guide with ideas and 'off the beaten path' suggestions that I will provide before your arrival.

The three most popular activities among my guests (besides relaxing with the view from the back deck at the end of the day) are hiking, biking, and kayaking. Tremendous bicycling for all levels from the house and on the Carriage Roads in the National Park. Fantastic kayaking opportunities all around, either for self-paced touring or going with a small group from one of several local outfitters. And plenty of hiking as well, for all ages and fitness levels. Here on the 'quiet side', we have a ton of high-payoff, low-effort trails- excellent for the whole family.

Golf: The Causeway Club in Southwest Harbor and the Bar Harbor Golf Club are public courses available to you.
