At the heart of Hawaii is a lush tropical paradise beyond compare. Waipio Valley 'Valley of the Kings' is very sacred to Hawaiians, filled with majestic waterfalls, Ancient Hawaiian farms, a gorgeous mile long black sand beach, and over 100 wild horses. The Hamakua Hideaway Cliffhouse is a custom built cottage (Hawaiian style), nestled on the edge of Waipio Valley, in a bamboo forest. You will become immersed in a garden full of beautiful flowers, edible herbs and exotic fruits. Enjoy awe-inspiring 180 degree view of the ocean on our cozy 'made for two' swing and hear the sound of the hundred foot waterfall beneath you. The complete privacy makes it perfect for having a romantic evening using the fully equipped kitchen or perhaps at one of the fabulous restaurants in our sweet little Honoka'a Town (short 10 min drive). Have the most romantic getaway in the 'two person' Jacuzzi tub or by the wood burning fire place then cuddle up in the loft. We provide premium quality organic sheets on the luxurious Cal King bed. We also pride ourselves on using only natural and organic cleaning supplies to keep the purity of the natural haven. If you want to explore Waipio Valley, you can hike it, horseback it, take a shuttle tour, or ride ATV's above it, as we are located just 2 min away from the check in location to many of these Waipio Tours, and a short 10 min walk to the Waipio lookout. Let us make help your magical fairy tale in Hawai'i come true.
Quotes from our in-house diary:
'Outstanding. Priceless. Peaceful. Relaxing. Delightful. Awesome. Fragrant. In no particular order... A real gem. Mahalo!'
Ruth and Allen -- Juneau, Alaska
'One of, if not the most, magical places we've ever been to. Everything from the cliffs to the sunset has been absolutely perfect. So glad we found this place. It reflects love and good spirit from every detail, every corner. Thank you so much for sharing this piece of paradise!'
Tim and Inca -- PA and Germany
'Thank God for this place, creation at its most serene. And thank you, Kristan, for sharing your home with so many of us. Not only would we return here again, we'd live here. Certainly we both take potent changes back with us to our home so far away.
I especially loved to capture the beauty here in my photography - framing Waipio cliffs amongst the incredible flowers of your garden. My husband most loved the isolation, a place for him to recharge his batteries, to sort life's problems out, and to make plans for the future. Truly a thought provoking environment.
Tim and Linda -- Scotch Plains, New Jersey
'What a beautiful, serene spot! We saw whale spouts and rainbows while just sitting on the lanai. This was exactly the vacation we needed. We loved coming back here at the end of every day and some days, we just never left! Thanks for sharing this very magical place with us.'
Cynthis and Heather -- Culver City, CA
'I'd like to write a few pages describing all the reasons that the Hamakua Hideaway is the absolute best place we've ever stayed, but my husband summed it up best - UTTER PERFECTION! Mahalo! We'll be back.'
Cara and Stephen -- Victoria, BC
'Thank you so much for an absolutely wonderful stay here at your Hideaway! The view is one of the most beautiful we've ever seen and the house has such unique character. We love the special touches - the pretty soft sheets, freah flowers, candles, landscaping, etc. We found ourselves on a circuitous route thru the house from the bed, to the Jacuzzi, to the massage table, (in-room massage from Rene Romano!)to the kitchen for food/drink, to the neat stone shower...and then back to be! What a rough day!'
Hilary and Wes -- Salem, VA
'Everything we dreamed it would be and more. We can honestly say this has been the best and most relaxing trip we have ever taken.'
Jim and Heidi -- Spring Hill, Kansas
'We have had an amazing few days here! My husband and I had planned to use this Hideaway as a starting point to explore the North of the island, but once we were here, we could barely tear ourseleves away! We spent most of our time enjoying this beautiful house. Your front porch was our big screen TV - we don't know how many hours we spent watching the light change on the cliffs. This has been the end of our honeymoon and we feel so rested and refreshed. Thanks for the beautiful and thoughtful little home.'
Alison and Andrew -- Hong Kong
'I sit here on the lanai, writing this as a rainbow arches over the lighted coast of Waipio Valley. This pretty much defines my experience here. Dawn and I loved this place. It feels like old Hawaii, back to nature and a connection to God. All the amenities were here, yet it felt like we were camping under the stars and surrounded by jungle. The Hideaway is certainly the most unique and pleasurable rental or B&B (and we've been to hundreds of them in our lifetime!) we have ever stayed in. Thank you (mahalo) for lending this experience to us. It's hard to leave.'

Kristan moved to the Big Island in 1984. With the help of her sons she enjoys organic farming and growing medicinal herbs and edible flowers.
She has raised 3 sons and now has 5 grandchildren, all living on the Big Island.
She established the Hamakua Hideaway Cliffhouse in 1986 and has been taking pride in the stewardship of this amazing place so that people from all over the world can come here and bask in the experience of this wonderful slice of paradise.
Kristan Hunt purchased this cabin in 1986
Kukuihaele has the best weather on the island. It is never too hot, too rainy, too windy or too cold. The air is clean and the volcanic sulfur rarely comes to this side of the island. The people in the village of Kukuihaele are friendly. The Hamakua Hideaway Cliff House is within walking distance to Waipio Valley, which is one of the most special places of this island and a wonderful hiking experience. Nature abounds. Beauty follows.
The Hamakua Hideaway Cliff House was the first vacation rental on this side of the island and we pride ourselves on having the touch of old aloha. This rustic cottage radiates warmth and charm and provides very restful and romantic stay. The spectacular views can be seen from every room. Immersed in total privacy you will see flowers everywhere, birds, geckos and the magnificent Waipio cliffs with its gorgeous waterfalls. You will hear the rushing water of the stream below and the gentle tradewind breezes passing through the bamboo.
Stayed at the Cliff House for 4 nights on our second stop during our 30th anniversary trip to the Big Island. I don't even know where to start. Everything about our stay was idyllic! I expected a rustic, simple cottage. The woodwork instead was just beautiful (what a ceiling!). The love and care that Kristan has put into every detail is quite evident - the art, the sculptures, the flowers - inside and out, just beautiful. The house is saturated in local culture. Books about the island and Hawaiian legend abound. And the view!!! Breathtaking, spectacular, awesome, amazing, holy - pick your favorite word and it still falls short. We really did feel like we were all alone in the Garden of Eden. Drinking wine on the lanai as the sun went down. Rocking on the swing in the garden. Simple delicious meals made in the well-equipped kitchen. Hot tubs watching the stars every night. Big comfortable bed with soft sheets and puffy pillows. I even loved the silky tropical curtains hanging from bamboo on the windows. Great road for jogging along the water too (don't be put off by the many friendly dogs who come out to say hi along the way). The house is minutes away from the Waipio Valley - a spectacular (but steep) hike down to a pristine black sand beach. You can also take a tour from the store just down the street. The quaint little town of Honokaa is just 10 minutes away with a few restaurants (Café Il Mondo was great for pizza and calzone. Also picked up a terrific CD of the local high school jazz band there!) Our very favorite beach was Hapuna Beach - gorgeous white sand beach great for swimming and snorkeling (drive to the left access area for shade and snorkeling). The restaurant at Hapuna Beach Prince resort was terrific for lunch. The beach at the Mauna Kea resort was also beautiful but the lot for public access fills up by around 8 am. The only other thing I can say is that I almost cried when we left. If you're looking for a romantic time with the one you love in paradise, look no further than the Cliff House.
We had a reservation on the Hamkua Coast that fell through! We remembered the Hamakua Hideaway from a previous visit in 1993! Luckily there was an opening and the owner was very helpful. We arrived at night, knowing that the comfortable King size bed was facing a morning view like none other! We slept soundly to the sounds of nature and waterfalls, under a quilt -Nature's airconditioning! The occasional gentle rain on the roof was so calming. If you are looking for a rejuvination away from the tourist traps and the noise of roads/cities this is heaven! The place is clean, the family(owner) is friendly but respectful of your privacy.
Surely one of the most ENCHANTING places on the planet--the views alone are jaw droppingly gorgeous. The swinging bench in the garden, a portrait of tranquility. The fragrance of exotic blooms in the air....
And that's just the outside!! Inside you'll find an exceedingly CHARMING, COMFORTABLE & CLEAN cottage stocked with any and everything you could possibly want. FABULOUS VIEWS from everywhere---you will LOVE the screened in jacuzzi room. Excellent bed and bedding. Such thoughtful care to details is a rarity. So tastefully appointed--we loved the blooming orchids, interesting Collectibles and the good library. If it was possible to award 20 STARS, I would!!
Do yourself a huge favor and book this place.
Having recently spent a week at the Hamakua Hideaway I expected to see nothing but glowing reviews on here, because I personally can't imagine what anyone would say wrong about it, so I was shocked to find some negative comments. Thus, I feel compelled to give my two cents. This place is amazing. My fiancee and I stayed here for a week as a rest in the middle of a very active Hawaiian vacation. The view overlooking the Pacific and the rugged northwest coast of the Big Island (on clear days you can even make out Maui in the distance) is only the beginning. The secluded feel on this more remote part of the island, the garden of colorful flowers, a wonderful jacuzzi with screens all around to keep out the bugs but let the warm Hawaiian breezes in, a comfortable bed (that is perfectly clean and doesn't smell at all as others have suggested), and even a grill to cook our dinners on. What really made this place extra special though was the care that the owner clearly puts into it. The little trinkets, books, and music that you could tell were all carefully selected to give the guests a true Hawaiian experience. If you are looking for a resort stay where all the modern ammenaties are available, everything looks polished, and your food is served to you, this may not be your place. It is comfortable and has the general ammenaties you'd expect out of this kind of place, but no, it was not built yesterday. If you are looking for a secluded Hawaiian getaway and don't mind making your own meals or not having wifi (I don't know that to be true, just saw it in another review--I personally had no interest in trying as I was trying to get away from my email) and the like, I can't imagine a better place to stay. If we ever get a chance to return to Hawaii the Hamakua Hideaway will be at the top of the list of places to return to.
I had been a bit concerned by one of the previous reviews but I must say that we had no complaints at all. Sitting on the sofa watching the view became the main part of our days here. The gardens are gorgeous too. We found everything to be perfectly clean. Despite our age and physical limitations we did manage to climb the ladder to the loft (and I'm afraid of heights) so saw no concern with that. We did go to the Waipio overlook but I could not manage the walk down into the valley. We were perfectly happy to return to the cottage and enjoy the view from there. The photos do give a good idea of the view and I'm glad to say that some of the more obtrusive vegetation has been tamed so the view is good. We enjoyed exploring nearby Honokaa and spent a day on the leeward side of the island, but didn't like it nearly as much. This was a delightful place to spend our last few days on Hawai'i Island and we would love to return one day. We would definitely recommend it to fellow travellers who are looking for individuality in their accommodations.
My wife and I very much enjoyed our stay at the Hamakua Hideaway Cliff House. The cottage has a lot of charm and character and is totally private and located in a rural low-traffic area. Surrounded by a lush tropical garden, the serenity is shared with lots of birds, geckos, and the odd mongoose and is only broken by the occasional crash of cantaloupe-sized avocados falling into the garden from the big tree up the hill behind.
The views are breathtaking and can be appreciated from every part of the cottage whether waking up in bed the morning, relaxing in the jacuzzi after a long day of hiking, eating dinner, or making a meal in the kitchen area.
There is a small barbecue which we used for every dinner as well as a large fridge and a decent stove. There is also a toaster/convection-oven which came in handy.
There are orchid plants in the cottage and there were nice fresh-cut flowers in the bathroom on our arrival.
The accommodation has a lot of character but is not brand new and I had a couple of small concerns that I took up with the owner. They were listened to and resolved quickly to my complete satisfaction.
There is an ethernet connection for internet access -- I'm conflicted over whether the lack if WiFi was a good thing or not (using my smartphone was my only internet device) but I'm sure I would have spent less time relaxing if I'd had the capability of connecting to my email. If you need to do some work during your stay though, I couldn't imagine a nicer place to hook up the laptop. There is a TV if you run out of books, although the cottage is well-stocked with interesting reading material.
The location is within a short walk to the Waipio Valley overlook. If you want to take a hike down the hill to the valley, beach, waterfalls, or make a hiking trip beyond into the Waimanu Valley there is no need to drive. We did a hike into the Waipio Valley but we also took a guided tour in a 4WD van with a great local guide by the name of Douglas -- book at the little store just around the corner and pick up some local ice cream for dessert while you're at it.
The neighborhood feels very authentic old-Hawai'ian, complete with plantation-era buildings and even a little country church that seems, from the sign out front, to include some Hawaiian language in the services.
We hope to return and recommend this rental if you want to relax in a comfy and bucolic setting with grandeur and beauty always in view
Honoka'a and our 'village' of Kukuihaele are charming, historical plantation communities with access to hiking, biking, horseback riding, ATV rides along the rim of Waipio Valley or wagon, horse and shuttle tours in the valley.
Your home is .5 miles from the Waipio Valley overlook, an easy and scenic walk. You can also drive into Waipio Valley and beach (with 4WD) or you can hike to the back of the valley which has the 2nd highest waterfall in the USA. If you are looking for more adventure, there is additional hiking into the next valley (Waimanu) which has THE highest waterfall in the USA. Waipio also has a mile long black sand beach with a clear water stream flowing into it. Waipio Valley is the most sacred valley on the island and the 2nd most visited natural site after Volcano Natural Park.
Honoka'a town is a charming one street town with cafes, gift and antique shops as well as a historic movie theater which offers traditional and artistic films as well as local and upscale musical events. It is the only theater between Hilo and Kona and simply a jewel. Check out the Honoka'a People's Theater website for current and upcoming events.
There is a grocery store and farmer's market in Honoka'a and another wonderful market where they sell amazing grass fed beef from the Big Island. We also have a new health food store/cafe. There are farmer's markets all over the Big Island. There are macadamia nut farms on the road to our location and you can often stop and buy right from the farmers when they have stands along the road, as well as folks selling their excess produce from their front yards for a nominal fee.
There are two gifts shops right in Kukuihaele as well as a small cafe and homemade ice cream.
