This place is beautiful but the owner, Floyd, was very rude and just plain grouchy. I'm not sure why he even rents this place out because he doesn't seem to like people, children, or dogs. Also beware that he lives on the property in a "mother-in-law" suite that is attached to the main cabin. Don't come here if you want to do anything other than walk a nature trail. No fires (even in a small fire pit) no pets (unless there on a leash) no kids allowed in the main house.....i could go on and on. Good place if you have no pets or children and just want to walk on a nature trail and go to sleep in a sort of clean cabin.
This is absoutely the most wonderful place. The pictures online do not do it justice. We were so comfortable there. The cabins are well spaced, the grounds are immaculate and the cabins are great. Everything you need is there already. Floyd showed me his lovely home and even gave us some crickets for fishing. We will try that next time we go, as we only stayed 2 nights and went to the lakes on the second day there. Didn't take the fishing gear with us then. Too tired to walk back that evening. Our dog Lucky spent alot of time exploring and watching the ducks at the pond. May I say that the pond is the
centerpiece of the place. So peaceful, and loaded with fish to feed and watch. There is a huge carp that came up to feed. He was so pretty. I wish we would have found this place before now. So close to home and so far out in the country. Derrick, the caretaker, was very nice and helpful with info. Only drawback was there was no fireplace. Would be nice in the wintertime but it wasnt cold enough anyway.
I would highly reccommend this place to close friends (maybe not - Keep it to ourselves) We hope to return soon. Thanks Floyd for sharing this piece of heaven on earth.
High Cotton Too was such a nice surprise for us to find so close to home ,I had written one review to say how we enjoyed our stay but it didn't show up. So I am doing it again! My husband and I had a couple of free days and wanted to go some where. We found High Cotton on the internet and was lucky enough to get booked on short notice. We very extremely happy for that! There really doesn't seem to be many cabin available to rent in the area.I have found many hotels, condos, bed breakfast, lake resorts(don't allow pets) The cabin was great with all the wood, quilts and antiques.Just exactly what we like to stay in!Loved the pond between the two houses with the cypress tree and iris! There were several small bridges on the property crossing the pond and a small creek,an arbor covered in blooming wisteria, and a lot of azaleas that we missed by a week or two in blooming.Just a nice place with the landscaping and decks. The trail to the lakes was nice ,wide and well kept. It's obivious from what we saw on our trips to the lakes the place is well taken care of and a lot of thought has gone into and continues to go into it from what Mr.Floyd told us of the renovations being done to the property and what we saw.Just a beautiful lovely, relaxing place to enjoy swimming and fishing away from the crowds. There is a pier, canoe,a paddle boat, table and chairs and a hammock at the first lake. The second lake is a little farther down the way or cut thru the woods save some time. It has a screened in boathouse and pier, a small bridge to explore,a new small cabin and some white geese Mr, Floyd had just added! It really is a perfect getaway for family, couples, small groups that want to just enjoy nature. We definitely plan on returning!
Our daughters had gone off on a trip for Springbreak and my husband and I decided to take a short two day trip.He needed knee surgery so we knew our activities would be limited, but just wanted to get away for a few days!We stayed at High Cotton Too.It is exactly like the pictures.I really enjoyed the all wood interior with antiques everywhere and lots of quilts. The pond by the houses is great.Surrounded by cypress trees and iris..Loved all the different plants and landscaping.Took a lot of pictures! There are several small bridges to cross the pond and small creek and an arbor covered in wisteria.Very pretty! Lots of azaleas but most had bloomed already. A week or so earlier would have been great for that. The trail to the lakes is nice and wide, well kept. There is a bridge that meanders thru the woods a short distance over a low spot.kinda fun. The 5 acre lake is for the swimming I think,It has everything you would need for a good time. There is a pier, canoe, a paddle boat, some chairs to relax in and even a hammock!Farthur down the trail is the larger lake for fishing. It has a boat house, another small bridge over the lake a new little cabin that's cool and also ,Mr. Floyd(nice man) told us the white geese had just been added. From the changes he told us about, the plans he has and what we saw,it's obvious a lot of thought and care goes into the property. We definitely plan to go again when we can use the canoe, paddle boat and do more exploring of the property.Really if someone wants to get away for some peace and quiet and have a nice time outdoors relaxing, swimming and fishing, minus the crowds, this is the perfect place to go!
The place and grounds are absolutely beautiful, however the place is not clean and one of the owners, Floyd, is very rude and unwilling to cooperate. The pool table no longer exists. The Fireplaces do not work. and I could never find the 3rd queen sized bed. I guess that one was taken by Floyd in the upstairs area of the home. The toilets had dried urine and hair on them. There were very personal used items (toothbrushes, razors with hair stuck inside, lubricants, Preparation H) in the bathroom cabinets and drawers, dust and cobwebs hanging from the wall and wall art in the cabin, dead and live bugs in the corners, used towels on the washing machine, a smell of something dead in the laundry room, shoes tucked in with the linens in the closet,... I can go on and on. When I called Ed, the man who rented it to me, he seemed very understanding and cooperative. He sent Floyd over to help. Floyd was very arrogant and rude. He went as far as asking me why I didn't just wipe the toilet, and blamed the dirt and cobwebs on the fact that it is located in the country I didn't even get to discuss any other problems with him. I wish I would have read the reviews on trip advisor about Floyd's other properties before I rented. I found that we are not the only ones to have had problems of an unclean place and Floyd's rudeness. (He accused one guest of planting insects in his place) I have stayed in quite a few vrbo places, and never have I dealt with such rudeness. VRBO should pay a visit to this place. If you visit the property, bring a cleaning crew. This place has so much potential, if they would just spend some time cleaning or getting a cleaning crew in there to get rid of the dirt and clutter.
I had driven down from the Northeast with my favorite companion, my dog Buster. I had stayed at High Cotton before so I decided to spend a couple of peaceful days in Poplarville. One reason of, of course, was that I knew Buster could enjoy the place too.
As soon as we arrived I could see how beautiful things were and could also gaze in amazement of how good things had grown back and how much grooming had been done to the property since Hurricane Katrina. As I walked the trails to Lake Ethel and Lake Mae it was so nice to see Buster enjoying the smells and sounds coming from the woods.
When we got back to the cabin I fixed dinner from items purchased in Poplarvile on the way in that day. I sat on the porch that evening with a nice glass of wine and relaxed to the sounds of frogs coming from the pond. What a nice quiet retreat! I watched the fireflies in the woods after dark and had memories of growing up in the South.
The next day Buster and I took our long walk, but this time I took a fishing pole and packed a lunch to go with us. It was so much fun catching fish and then releasing them back into the lake. Buster waited patiently, but was more happy to walk back to the cabin for dinner and relaxation on the porch in a rocking chair. I slept well that night and so did Buster!
I was more than pleased with my experience. I came to a decision as I drove away. I would like to meet my family at High Cotton at Christmas and we will fill all the rooms and share the serenity and true peace that the whole world could use right now!
