HISTORIC, GRADE II LISTED ROMANTIC VILLA WITH UNPARALLELED INTERIOR

Hampstead House Rental Photos and Description

5 bedroom, 4 bathroom idealistic villa with a garden in soothing Hampstead

Could it be magic

Just once in a while comes a home so exceptional, so well situated and exquisitely furnished, that it’s hard to believe it’s quite real. Such is Gainsborough Gardens, an Arts and Crafts house on a private road between Hampstead Village and the Heath. Indeed, there’s a chance that this home is not altogether unfamiliar – it appears in the film The Railway Children, and during the 1970’s it was the dwelling place of Elton John. Whether you’re at the piano in the music room or idling in the mature garden, this is perfection unblotted, a peerless family home.

Spellbound

Your hosts are a large ex-pat family. Mum and Dad and their teenage children spend long afternoons on the Heath with their dogs, or exploring the winding backstreets of Hampstead.

Make a wish

Gloriously romantic and wonderfully hospitable, this is the home you’ve been dreaming of. The entrance hall alone is a fantasy of stained glass and sweeping banisters. The newly refurbished country kitchen opens out onto a rug-strewn seating area, and cosy sofas rest atop a pale wooden floor. The dining table sits amidst a pool of leaf-dappled sunshine in the pretty conservatory, and doors open onto a walled garden so English it could come straight from a fairytale.

The sitting room is up that splendid staircase, on the first floor. Here, warm terracotta walls enclose squashy couches and vintage furniture. There’s a large original fireplace, and wistful souls will love the window seat, with its balmy treetop views. Next door, the drawing room holds more comfortable sofas alongside a well-loved piano and even a violoncello.

On the top two floors are the bedrooms. All are filled with antique furniture, and painted in gorgeously rich pastels. The master bedroom holds a super king-sized bed, acres of carpet in clotted cream, and not so much an ensuite as your own personal spa. There’s another spacious double next door, a cute single, and a wood panelled family bathroom. Up again and you’ll find two doubles nestling in the attic, a shower room and a mint green bathroom. Close the doors and sink down onto our crisp white sheets. Nothing will disturb you but the birds in the treetops, just beyond your window.

Reality check

Never fear, for the world beyond your front door is just as delightful as that behind it. Hampstead Heath is a semi-wild 800 acre Eden of woodlands, ponds and meadows. Or turn the other way to cobbled Hampstead. Affluent and intellectual, designer boutiques rub shoulders with artisan cafes, dusty bookshops and tempting restaurants. The tube from Hampstead to Leicester Square takes seventeen minutes.

Home truths: This is a much loved big family home, but there are some signs of wear and tear There is no storage actually in the back top floor double bedroom, there is a closet in the corridor for guest use. Your hosts have two great dogs. They won’t be here during your stay but if you have allergies this might not be the best home for you.
