Last year, as we waited for the decision regarding the America's Cup, memories of years ago resurfaced. Oceancliff is exactly one mile from Ft. Adams. There is no more perfect place to watch than from the rolling grounds of the resort, looking down on the Bay, as boats pass around the bend to the open ocean. When the America's Cup was held in the States, the press came to Oceancliff to shoot the race - boats entering the ocean around the bend.
Come sit on the Adirondack chairs, with Jamestown and the Newport Bridge in front of you, and watch sailboats and the sunset across the water. Ft. Adams and and Breton State Park, both within a mile and both on the famous Ocean Drive. Around the corner is the Atlantic Ocean. Newport is still the best of quaint New England towns. You can walk or bike Ocean Drive, walk the famous Cliff Walk, see the mansions, antique, enjoy the ambiance of the harbor town. There are two condos, one in August is very large and sleeps six. At this point, the weekend and one mid-week day are still available. The October one bedroom condo, at the less crowded time of the year, is a good choice for a romantic or family week or weekend away. Newport awaits.
Oceancliff Options: You can be as physically active or as sedentary as you wish: There are the famous Newport mansions, the newly repaired Cliff Walk, ocean beaches, antiquing, and the great harbor town, all minutes away. Several scuba diving sites are close to Oceancliff and all around in Newport, as well as across the Bay in Jamestown. Scuba divers can rent gear at dive shops in town. For runners, walkers, and bikers, do the Ocean Drive or Cliff Walk for incredible views of the open ocean with rocky shoreline. There are also nature trails and a bird sanctuary within three miles. At least five beaches (and one secret beach!) are within a few miles. Bring your wetsuit and surfboard, bathing suit, and beach chair. (In October, the tropical fish are in, and you can catch your own for your fish tank!) Dine out or eat in. Oceancliff - recently and completely renovated - is quite wonderful.
Boston & Providence, city life outside Newport: If you want some city life during your vacation, Providence is about a half hour away. The spectacular Waterfire events on the river through the center of the capital city go on all through summer into the end of October. Experience the 100 braziers of fire on the rivers in Providence, a unique - and free - art event! (Owner is a Waterfire volunteer with LOTS of info on this wonderful, unique experience.) If you want to venture into Boston, just an hour north, you can also ask for that city's summer or autumn activities. So, once again, the dilemma is how much to do or not do at all...
I live in Tiverton now, and one thing that brought me so near after years in the Boston area IS Oceancliff. Retired now, I volunteer with several organizations, including a folk and roots music venue, Waterfire in Providence, and Little Brothers in Boston. I sing in a community chorus.
Oceancliff sits on the Narragansett Bay, and as the salesman said back in 1985 (yes, that long ago), I now own a piece of the rock!
Oceancliff amenities include: barbecue, tennis, indoor pool, restaurant, outdoor bar & grill. You can sit at the bar outside and look out at sailboats coming out of the famous Newport harbor around the bend. The open ocean is around the other bend. Oceancliff has 22 acres of rolling grass overlooking the Bay. This is where the press used to come to shoot the race entering the ocean, when we had the America's Cup in the States. The site is fantastic: you can sit on the Adirondack chairs, with Jamestown in view across the Bay.
Other Activities: famous Newport mansions, walk the Cliff Walk
