D) THE NEIGHBOURHOOD
You can simply enjoy the white sand beach and turquoise waters of the Caribbean Sea, Puerto Morelos and elsewhere throughout the Riviera Maya (140 km coastline between Cancun and Tulum).
The reef in Puerto Morelos (environmentally protected area) is home to many species of fish in bright colors: need to take a trip, the first reefs are 150 meters from the edge and full of specimens of all kinds (eagle rays, barracudas etc..) that you can enjoy with a mask and snorkel.
If you like diving, go to Playa del Carmen, or better, on the island of Cozumel. The seabed is magnificent.
If you prefer fresh water, take a ride in the "cenotes" you will discover crystal clear water, stalactites and stalagmites, bats etc.. On the road between Puerto Morelos Leona Vicario (one that leads to the house), there are cenotes all 4/5 km or less between km 13 and km 20 "7 bocas", "verde lucero" "La Noria" etc.. They all have their charm! We recommend the "Gran Cenote" near Tulum on the Tulum-Coba highway and cenote La Noria, lost in the jungle (20 km).
If you want to swim with sharks (harmless), visit Holbox Island, north-east of Cancun (road Mérida). If you prefer dolphins, Puerto Aventuras, south of Playa del Carmen will seduce you. A few kilometers further, in Akumal, you can swim with turtles!
Another site to visit Isla Mujeres (Island of Women). Take the boat to Puerto Juarez (Cancun fishing port) and not in the Hotel Zone or take a trip in a small fishing boat 5/6 persons (250 pesos per person per day, including meals). Go to the end of the Playa Norte and swim with the fish, hundreds, reach between your legs!
Many theme parks are available: Xel-Ha (fauna and flora), X-Caret (Mexican folklore of yesterday and today), X-Plor (aerial and aquatic activities). But beware, these parks are very expensive! Prefer "Selvatica" X-Plor: closer (19 km: 10 minutes from the house), plus family and much cheaper!
If you like history, visit course, Chichen Itza and Tulum, Coba also well known (set of small Mayan that can be visited on foot, by bicycle or tricycle taxis (hired) sites. Follow the "Ruta Puc ', go to Uxmal, if you have time (but be careful, the distances are large and the roads through villages filled with" topes "outsized strips).
The cities of Valladolid and Merida will also offer their colonial charm. In Mérida, during the summer, free folk performances are held every evening in the main square. The crafts are cheaper than Cancun, take the opportunity to do your shopping there!
EATING AND entertainment:
If you like authentic Mexican food, avoid tourist restaurants in Cancun and Playa del Carmen, eat in the village of Puerto Morelos (not port) where you will find the same dishes three times cheaper. Do your shopping in small shops (enjoy pineapples, mangoes, guavas, papayas, watermelon) and discover the "tacos, enchiladas, tamales" and other Mexican snacks. Attention to the "habanero chile" (local pepper), it is very strong!
If you like to go clubbing or a drink in the evening in a lively area, the cities of Cancun (very expensive Hotel Zone) and Playa del Carmen, more user-friendly, open their doors. The port of Puerto Morelos is the scene of street performances on Friday evening during the summer. Many cafes stay open late.
For thrills, you can make the Tyrolean "SELVATICA" (km 19 of the "ruta de los cenotes", 5 minutes from the house) or rent a quad (at km 20) to go to the "cenote La Noria "through the jungle.
In the port of Puerto Morelos, you can rent bicycles along the beach and visit "Crococun" little small but very interesting zoo (crocodiles, snakes, spiders etc.. Monkeys), especially for children.
The nearest international airport: Cancun.
- Rental car at the airport but same book from France, Opodo or E-bookers (compare prices, prefer Hertz or Avis Europcar, beat cars are essentially the same.). Make it around the car before the handle.
- Bus: from the Cancun airport, there are buses that take you to the bus station in Cancun (about 40 pesos per person), in the city center. From the bus station, buses (clean, comfortable, air conditioned) will take you throughout Mexico.
- Individual Taxi: Do not take a taxi to the airport, it costs an arm and a leg and they have no taximeter! In town, a taxi costs about 25 pesos but you must agree with the driver before getting in his car. For the hotel zone, count from 80 to 100 pesos.
- Collective taxis: it is the fastest and cheapest way to travel from one city to another. It's everywhere and they will stop almost anywhere. There are even those who depart from the center of Puerto Morelos (near the public park) and take you to the km10. 5 of the "ruta de los cenotes"!
Prefer "casas de cambio" banks (cheaper rates).
To withdraw money, prefer distributors within banks (safer).
To pay by credit card, do so only in the major retailers (Soriana, Comercial Mexicana etc).
- A Cancun Market 28 (a bit pricey) or 23 (cheaper but a little dirty) open daily
- A Playa del Carmen: 5a Avenida (5th Avenue), expensive but quality craftsmanship
- A Puerto Morelos Pette shops in the port
- A Merida in the craft market downtown
- A Tulum in the city, along the main avenue
