There are no dunes to climb making for easy access to the water front. Check out the water mat, it's similar to a trampoline but on the water like a magic carpet. Bring your watershoes for more comfort along the waters edge and for walking the shore.
Northport is a quaint waterfront town with boat launch, marina, shopping, hiking and more. The village is conveniently located at the tip of the peninsula making it convenient to visit neighboring Leland, Sutton’s Bay, Glen Lake, Sleeping Bear Dunes, and just a 30 minute trip to Traverse City for the annual Film Festival or Cherry Festival. There are many benefits to spending your vacation on the bay vs. on Lake Michigan. If you enjoy the water, you’ll love the calm and relative warmth of the bay. We welcome you to our home and hope that you enjoy your vacation in Leelanau County.
A great Girl Scout campfire tip - recycle your old egg cartons, prefer cardboard, and lint from the dryer plus your half used candles. Using an old kettle as double boiler with another sturdy pan or other open mouth kettle, fill the pot half way with water and place the kettle in the water. Fill the kettle with your old candles and melt them down. Place the lint in the openings of the egg cartons. Then pour the hot melted wax over the lint. Lint, wax, and cardboard are outstanding firestarters for your campfire! I keep my recycled egg cartons next to my dryer and fill them weekly. I usually wait until I have half dozen or so before I melt wax and make the starters.
Enjoy your campfire!

We discovered Northport in the early 80's and found it to be one of the most picturesque and relaxing places around. After years of visiting we made the decision to purchase our own home. Though it's a long drive for us, we find it to be worth every minute. The quaint village of Northport and neighboring towns are perfect for our family and friends. This is a great esacape from the hectic city life of Chicago.
Our location is perfect. We have just the right balance of proximity to town while also enjoying the seclusion of being nestled in the trees. After spending time in other areas, we appreciate being able to use the water and not worry about currents or waves. Calm, peaceful, safe, friendly, and just simply beautiful!
Thanks for sharing your amazing house with our families. We will always remember this house as the awesome place with the cool mat in the lake. Most of our time in the days we'd play on that for hours! Thanks again.
Four generations of ladies came for a week's vacation. Grandma, Mom, two sisters and a granddaughter. This house is amazing! Everything we could have asked for and so much more. My grandmother and mother both appreciated the ground floor bedrooms while my sister and I, along with my 8 year old daughter, slept like rocks in the beds upstairs. You can hear the waves crashing on the shore from the upper loft and each bed had it's own pillow pet and matching duvet and quilt. My daughter was in heaven after discovering the kids cupboard and the Wii. The kitchen was incredibly well stocked including sharp chefs knives (a rarity in the rental world!), a Keurig coffee maker and well maintained appliances. My sister and I used the outdoor shower every day rather than showering inside. The town is a quick jaunt down the road and if you want great baked goods, Barb's Bakery should not be missed. Tom's Market is well stocked and local wine is cheaper there than any place else we found. This house was a dream come true. We relaxed, laughed and just enjoyed spending time together. We can not recommend it enough.
My extended family of nine had a WONDERFUL time at this lovely cottage. It offers a great combination of a peaceful, waterfront, wooded location along with proximity to a small town with shops, groceries, restaurants and coffee. The owner of this cottage was lovely to work with--prompt in responding to e-mails and phone calls and generous with ideas and suggestions about what to do during our visit. Special details about this cottage that we particularly enjoyed: outdoor shower GREAT for little kids who were swimming a lot, lots of bikes for renters to use to ride around Northport, gas stove ideal for cooking meals all week, multiple outdoor spots to sit and relax (decks, chairs, fire pits, hammock).
Dana and Joe, thanks much for sharing your exquisite place on Northport Bay with us during the coveted Fourth of July week. You accommodated for every convenience, and the views from the deck were just beautiful. This was our third summer renting a place "up North," and by far the best. Our boy loved the water mat and playing in the sand. We were captivated by the peacefulness and little touches to make it really feel like "home" -- at least for that week! Thank you again for making our summer vacation :)
We have been to this property three times now and have never been disappointed! The house and location is outstanding. The rooms, the deck, the water and location are everything a family needs. Our children walk in every time and say "Have you Missed Us?" and of course wish it was theirs. The owners are extremely nice and we would not hesitate to recommend to someone or rent again.
This property is great! It has all the comforts of home along with an abundance of beautiful, rustic scenery. This house is great to rent if you'd like to experience northern Michigan. We had 11 people and there was something for everyone. We rode bikes into the quaint little town of Northport, sat on the dock, swam, cooked out, had a bonfire and shopped nearby at Sutton's Bay and Fishing Town in Leland. This vacation spot is 30 minutes from Traverse city. We rented a boat there and took the kids tubing. The owners have thought of everything you will need and have it there. Pack your bags!
Spent a week at 571 On-The-Bay with the moms in my family. Such a lovely location that encourages lots of play in a relaxing and comfortable setting. The house was well-equipped with everything one might need to satisfy all ages. Handicapped-accessibility to baths, beds, decks and beach area without difficulty with plenty of indoor space to maneuver a wheelchair. Property is well-maintained and clean. Northport appeals to those seeking a slower-paced vacation but is close to many high-interest and beautiful areas. The outdoor shower was a big hit with our group! The swimming was glorious with crystal clear water but is quite rocky - good water shoes a must. Sandy play area for the younger ones. Will certainly return in the future. Thanks for a great week in northern Michigan!
