Wilderness setting in East Ryegate, Vermont. On VAST trail. Super fishing for perch, pickeral, horned-pout(catfish), small mouth bass, wall- eyed pike. There are only four cottages on Symes Pond, private and secluded from each other by at least 500 feet with trees in between. Each is located directly on the pond with spectacular views from each front porch. These new knotty pine cottages each feature a cathedral ceiling, glass front wood-stove or fire pit, satellite TV, free wi fi for emails available at central location at specified hours, VCR, full kitchen, gas heat, private sandy beach that has a gradual slope; perfect for the young ones.

Each cottage has a wood fired outdoor hot tub constructed of Eastern White Cedar available for rent. Fire up your tub and soak in the natural beauty of Symes Pond. Each seats six.

About Carl Blaisdell

Owner Description: I am a retired postmaster. I had been living at the advertised cottage year round until my 82 year old father fell out of a 20 foot high tree stand while hunting on the property. I had to leave this special place in order to care for him. I now offer to share this home with you.

Carl Blaisdell purchased this cottage in 1955

Why Carl Blaisdell chose St Johnsbury

Why the Owner Chose Symes Pond: This property is best described as 'A piece of Heaven'. The wooded mountains slope down to meet the pond. There is absolutely no road noise. All that can be heard is an occasional call of the Loon, the hoot of an owl, or perhaps the howl of the coyote at night.

What makes this cottage unique

The Unique Benefits Of This Cottage: After dark, sit in the hot tub which overlooks the pond. Shut off the jets, turn off the lights, and just listen. Your space becomes one with the surrounding woods. You may hear a deer crossing just above you or geese landing on the pond below. The call of the loon or the hoot of an owl breaks the silence. You look up and see the stars or perhaps the blinking lights of a jet thousands of feet above as it crosses the night sky. This is the place to let all your cares evaporate. You will go home with a new perspective. And you will come back.

Our stay in your cabin (Eagle's Nest) was GREAT!

The view was breathtaking! We loved canoing, and searching for wildlife. We saw deer, loons, wild turkey, chickadees, nuthatches, and geese. We especially enjoyed the horseback riding.

Nature paradise!

  • 5 of 5
We truly enjoyed our stay at the Moose Landing cabin. This is a spot for nature lovers and anyone that wants to "get away from it all." The camps are deep in the woods down a gravel road. The views from the cabin were breathtaking and the surrounding property was fun to explore. Watching and hearing the loons on the lake was a treat! The cabin had all the amenities needed for our week long stay, and it was fairly easy to get to whatever we needed in the nearby town of Woodsville NH. We enjoyed using the provided canoe and oars to explore Symes Pond. The owner Carl checked in with us several times to ensure we had everything we needed. We didnt need a thing, but I am confident he would have addressed any issues brought to his attention. I am looking forward to visiting again next year!

Couldn't have asked for more...

Couldn't have asked for more...

The pictures and description on this advertisment do NOT do the cabin justice. My wife and I stayed at Loon Lodge and couldn't stop saying to each other how perfect it was throughout the entire week. The cabin was clean and ready for us on arrival. Carl was on site and gave us good directions into town for groceries and béer. I'll apologize to Carl now for the abundance of cans and lobster/mussel shells in the garbage since we didn't cross paths when we left. The lodge itself was rustic but had all the amentities of home, it was gréât to cook on a propane stove again. The firepit and hot tub were just a few feet from the edge of the lake and offered an amazing view (especially at sunset). We spent HOURS on the lake either swimming or on the canoë. It turned out our city dog is really a country (canoë) dog at heart. The fishing was good, I was able to pull a few pike. There was one that got away though on day 2 or 3 that I kept going back for but was never able to land.

If you're looking for solitude this is the place for you, the only time you know you even have neighbours is when you cross paths on the lake or at the woodhouse.

The local area offers everthing you need, New Hampshire is a 20 minutes drive and Dog Mountain is about 25.

Thanks again Carl,

Matthew and Andrea

Owner's Response: Thank you Matthew and Andrea for your wonderful review. It was my pleasure to meet you both and to be able to share our piece of paradise. It really makes my day when campers share with me their experiences . One camper recently sent me a photo of a huge bass that he caught here. Another told me how she watched a mother moose with her twin calves playing on the shore. The same week you were here, a couple got married in St. Johnsbury and brought their wedding photographer back to camp for shots of them floating in a canoe on Symes Pond. We keep a journal at each cottage for campers to share their experiences. What a pleasure it is to read these! Thanks again. Carl

Beautiful and quiet

  • 5 of 5
My husband and I just spent last week in the "Moose Landing" cottage and we had a great time. This place is beautiful and it was perfect and just what we were looking for: secluded, quiet, gorgeous views, and a canoe right there for us to use during our stay. We spent the mornings either fishing or hiking, right off our doorstep! We spent the afternoons swimming in the cool, clean water. At night we roasted hot dogs and marshmallows in the fire pit outside. We read good books on the lovely deck overlooking the rolling hills, forest, and pond--just beautiful. The loon family is beautiful and we enjoyed listening to their calls. What a wonderful place!

Moose Landing

We enjoyed the design of the cabin's open architecture: the interior balcony overlooking the living room, the upstairs deck over the front porch, the quaint and more-than-adequate kitchen. The location can't be beat. From the front porch, we experienced the beautiful view of Lower Symes pond and the surrounding mountains, which showed no signs of civilization. The chairs on the deck were ultra-comfortable, and the hot tub, also with a view of the pond, provided an equally relaxing experience.

The narrow winding road to the cabin contributed to our feeling of seclusion.

The fishing was excellent. We caught a lot of pickerel and small-mouth bass on spoons and little green-and-white artificial minnows, working the shoreline and edges of the lily pads. With a worm, a hook, and an hour, a person could catch 20 perch, many over 8 inches.

Kayaking on the pond was a blast, and there was another pond connected to the north-west side of Lower Symes that is postcard perfect and equally untouched by man. Sliding silently across the reflection of the mountains in a kayak, I saw deer cautiously approach the water's edge for a drink. Many experiences were both peaceful and exciting.

We liked watching the kingfishers fish and the humming birds hum. Anyone interested in birds will enjoy seeing the grouse and turkey in the woods and loons, herons and ducks on the water, not to mention the countless other birds.

We took a few escapades to the north, including biking in Quebec and a quick stop for poutine. Cabot is a town in the proximity of the cabin, about 20 minutes away, and the Cabot Cheese Factory Tour was both educational and delicious.

Carl, the owner of the cabin, was pleasant. He made sure we were set immediately after our arrival, and he checked on us a couple of times during the week. I never felt like he was intruding, but I always felt like he would respond if we needed him. We didn't. Everything was perfect.

We brought an extra fan because I read a review that the air circulation in the cabin was poor. We didn't share this observation. There was a ceiling fan and two fans in the cabin, but nevertheless, one of the August nights, we didn't mind having our extra fan to quickly regulate the indoor temperature for comfort.

There is a strong Verizon signal throughout the location and satellite TV in the cabin, but I recommend keeping the electronic devices turned off.

Bliss! Moose Landing

  • 5 of 5
So perfect. Everything as advertised. My husband and two Golden Retrievers, Trinity and Brady, and I spent our anniversary here. The dogs had a great time romping and swimming. We had a time great reading, cooking, enjoying a warm fire and the Milky Way! We did hear the coyotes howling and the beavers slapping the pond. Great to melt away the rat race. Can't wait to head back to paradise!
Thanks Carl and Kym!
