In the heart of Renaissance Florence, this large, elegant apartment overlooks the Arno one block downstream from the Excelsior and Grand hotels. The apartment has more than 2,000 square feet of living space. It is on the second floor (American style) of a 19th century palazzo built in the classic Florentine-style. There is an elevator. The view includes the 'Oltrarno' section of the city, with Brunelleschi's Santo Spirito and the Pitti Palace, and beyond are the Belvedere Fortress and the Bellosguardo hill, with ancient villas visited by Dante and Boccaccio, and olive groves, vineyards, and 600-year old cypresses. If you look out the windows to your left, you see the palaces lining the Arno and the Ponte Vecchio. In the midst of this intense little city, the apartment provides an oasis of spacious calm, the ideal refuge from visiting museums and shopping.
For those attending trade shows, conventions, etc., the apartment is about a 15 minute walk from the convention center at the Fortezza da Basso.
Three rooms in the front of the apartment, the living room, dining room, and study, overlook the Arno.
The living room is 24 ft by 16 ft. The dining room is 14 ft by 14 ft. The study is 15 ft by 14 ft. All three rooms have high ceilings, elegant moldings, and period furniture. The dining room table seats 10 adults. There is a queen-size sleep-sofa in the living room and a smaller sleep-sofa in the study. The master bedroom is 17 ft by 16 ft and has a queen-sized bed. The master bathroom, 8 ft by 17 ft, with a tub and a separate, large stall-shower. A second bedroom, 11 ft by 10 ft, has another queen-sized bed, and a door leading onto the covered terrace. There is a small bathroom off this bedroom with a toilet, sink and shower. A third small bedroom is off the master bedroom. There also is a half bath off the entrance foyer.
One of the joys of the apartment is a large (500 square foot), covered terrace, in the back of the apartment, well-furnished for enjoying cocktails or a meal, or just for hanging out on a lazy day.
This apartment has been in the family since just after World War II. It is our home in Europe, and we love it dearly. We frequently spend up to two or three months a year here, and hope to make it our full-time home when my wife retires in a couple of years.
The thing that makes this apartment truly special is its location. All of the wonderful things that Florence has to offer - art, music, shopping, food, wine, and so on - are at the very doorstep. But the apartment is a total escape from the hurly-burly of this intense little city. With its spactious rooms and terrace, and its breathtaking views over the Arno, it really provides a warm and tranquil oasis.
All that Florence has to offer - art, culture, fashion, gastronomy - are at the doorstep of this fabulous apartment. You can walk to everything in the center of town in 10 minutes or less, if you don't stop to window shop on the way. Located on the Lungarno Amerigo Vespucci, in one of the most elegant neighborhoods of central Florence, the apartment is within a few minutes walking distance of the Ufizzi and all the other museums, the Duomo and all the other art-filled churches, world famous shops and celebrated restaurants. The Teatro Communale, site of many Maggio Musicale and other events, is a five-minute walk away. The main city park, the Cascine, with tennis courts and swimming pools, is a 10-minute walk away.
Just behind the apartment is the Borg'Ognissanti, one of the most elegant shopping streets in Florence, with stores selling antiques, jewelry, leather, linen, groceries, pastries, plus Botticelli's parish church.
