From its perch on a high bluff, The Charles Hovey House (c.1845) surveys a panoramic sweep of Gloucester Harbor. Cape Ann's most prestigious historic home, The Hovey House has been fully restored with period antiques and original art. Crystal chandeliers suspended from twelve-foot ceilings, gleaming parquet floors, gilded mirrors, antique six-foot soaking tubs, and marble fireplaces contribute to the atmosphere of relaxed elegance. The one-acre lot is abloom from spring to frost with lush gardens surrounded by rolling lawns. An awning-covered veranda, 50' long, overlooks the harbor, Ten Pound Island and two lighthouses (the opening scene from The Perfect Storm), and the comings and goings of the Gloucester fishing fleet, schooners and yachts. The Hovey House also operates as a B&B and so is fully appointed with linens, towels and many other amenities. Individual rooms are available nightly on B&B basis when the house is not rented by the week. Room rates $135-$250, include breakfast

Gloucester is the oldest working seaport in America, and prides herself on not being 'tourist-y'. If you have seen the movie or read the book, 'The Perfect Storm,' you already know a bit about Gloucester. But there's so much more. We are also the oldest art colony, a consequence of being on the same latitude as Tuscany and Provence. Like her European counterparts, the quality of the light has made Gloucester a Mecca for artists for centuries. This is also one of the top five whale watching areas in the world. Another superlative: If antiquing is your thing, Gloucester is nearly 400 years old; what comes of folks' cellars and attics is the real thing. There's so much more to do here: charter fishing, hiking, biking, shopping, kayaking, birding (one of the top areas in the US), sunset schooner cruises, theaters, museums, live music, beautiful beaches, tours, world-class dining. And Boston is only 45 minutes away by train or car.
