Overview

Porthallow Barn Rental Photos and Description

Studio Barn very close to the beach

Just yards from the beach in this tranquil, quintessential Cornish fishing village, an enchanting detached stone studio. Close to beautiful coastal walks leading around the Lizard peninsula and along the shoreline of the Helford River. Full of character with a mezzanine double bed area enjoying glimpses of the sea, kitchenette, living area and a shower/utility room, packing everything one would need into a perfectly formed space. Ideally located with a tranquil part of Cornwall yet close proximity to the Helford River, Helston, Lizard Peninsula. Nearby attractions include Goonhilly, Trelowarren, Roskilly's and local diving at Polkerris.

Great for short or long breaks away from the city. Ideal for those who want quiet break away from the hustle and bustle of work and traffic noise.

From the Cornish meaning 'port at the end of the moor', Porthallow's history has always been inextricably linked with the sea. A former thriving Pilchard port, small fishing boats are still hauled onto the beach to this day. A number of buildings in the village also exhibit tell tale signs of the industry, if a little less obvious to the casual observer - The Association's Institute building is sighted over a former pilchard cellar!

Set in the heart of the small fishing village of Porthallow with the beach is just a few minutes' walk away. The South West Coast Path is just 50 metres from the studio, offering excellent coastal views across Falmouth Bay to St. Anthony's Head, and a beautiful walk to Gillan Creek and the Helford River. Porthallow beach is used by local fishermen, and it is possible to drive onto the beach to launch canoes and dinghies. The local pub, The Five Pilchards, offers a warm welcome to visitors and there is a craft shop with locally made pottery. The village shops in St Keverne, just a couple of miles away, offer comprehensive supplies. The local wildlife is abundant, with buzzards circling over the valley and seals occasionally visiting the bay. The Old Stable is in probably one of the most peaceful spots in Cornwall, and offers the opportunity for a truly relaxing holiday by the sea.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Ode to The Old Stable

From Pralla's Old Stable, I was certainly able

To enjoy a whole week, exploring Mullion to Gweek. Around all Lizard's coast, I can defnitely boast, Many miles of walking and scenic recording.

But knowing each day, a good place to stay,

The Old Stable cosy and, when I felt dozy,

A comfy warm bed, to lay down my head,

This was all I could ask for.....

I'll be back for more!

Cosy Cottage

  • 5 of 5

We booked this place mainly due to the price, as we were planning to spend most of the trip elsewhere. Therefore, we weren't expecting much... However, the cottage was lovely! It was clean, warm and cosy and the location was wonderful. The first night, we arrived in the dark and went to the local pub for food. They were very welcoming and the food and beer was great. The next morning, we saw Porthallow in the light and loved it! The cove was a great place to start and end each day. We would certainly recommend this place to anyone heading down that way.

We enjoyed our stay in the "old stable" very much!

  • 5 of 5

We loved the small village, the seaside, very friendly people and the nice pub! The old stable is very nicely done up and tidy! The only thing we missed was a possibility to cook our own meals. We were three people- so it was quite small- but very cosy:) We loved it very much!

Small but perfect!

  • 5 of 5

Since we were working on the geology of the shore section at Porthallow and were without a car, we were looking for something within walking distance. The Old Stables met our needs perfectly. But under different circumstances, I can only imagine the place would be perfect for an intimate romantic getaway for two. And just two minutes from the coast path, the water, and the great food and beer at the Five Pilchards - who could ask for more!

Wonderful cosy cottage

  • 4 of 5

We really loved the old stables and will definitely stay again in future - the use of space in there is phenomenal.

So many lovely design features and creative elements. Really delightful seaside feel to the decor.

Particularly loved the lighting throughout - the tubing on the beams was great and really helps create a relaxed and laid back atmosphere.

The cottage was clean and tidy and everything was easy to find. Lovely setting as well.

It certainly provided the ideal space for our mini break.

I would say, mind your head, as the cottage is not built for the tall. At 5 foot 9 - I was definitely the maximum height for the shower!

I would highly recommend the cottage to anyone looking for a quiet bolt hole to escape to or a base to explore this wonderful part of Cornwall.

Stylish tranquil escape

  • 5 of 5

This property is lovely. Its tiny, but that didnt bother us at all, everything you need is fitted into the small space and decorated in a stylish seaside style. The location was exactly what we wanted. Yes its a bit of a drive to get to that part of cornwall but well worth it. The beach is pebbly with lots of interesting rock pools(for kids or big kids!). It a 30 second walk from the pub and the stable. The pub the 5 pilchards is great. We sat there for an afternoon chatting to the charterfilled locals when the italian chef proundly paraded a large sea bass around the bar he'd just got from a boat. We booked a table for the evening(do book it fills up very quick) and ended having the bass between 2. Amazing food! A car is a must for exploring, we were only there for 3 nighta and could have happily stayed for weeks! A must visit spot!

Cleverly Compact Clean Cosy & Comfortable

  • 5 of 5

A cleverly thought out conversion of Porthallow's Old Stable into a compact, cosy but comfortable place to stay. Clean and well kitted out, everything you need for a holiday 'home from home'. Perfect for one, good for two - it might be a squeeze for three adults; The Old Stable is small! I was very happy (small person that I am and holidaying alone) but if you want more space or are of larger / taller than average size, this may not be for you.

Porthallow Cove is just 1 minute's walk from the door in this peaceful hamlet; a real escape from modern, daily life but remaining an excellent base from which to explore the Lizard Peninsula (and beyond).

The listing is accurate; the property is clean and well-kept. I feel sure I'll be returning to "The Old Stable" for more holidays!
