|Minimum Stay||1 - 3 nights|
Nyati Hill Cottages is run in cooperation with the Rudolf Steiner School in Mbagathi with the purpose of contributing to the schools operations.
Our aim is to combine the schools operations with the possibility for offering visiting tourists an exceptional place to stay.
The cottages are built in authentic African style with walls of local stones and roofs of local timber and grass. These building materials ensure a temperate indoor climate making the cottages cool in the hot season and warm in the colder season.
Our cottages offer stylish and cosy accommodation.
The cottages are fully equipped with modern facilities and decorated with local furniture and handicraft.
The outside areas are characterised by paving of natural stone among grassy areas with old trees and flowerbeds and bushes.
Below the cottages you will find the pool area with a fantastic view over the hills of Nairobi National Park.
The Mbagathi River runs along the bottom of the hillside where the animals come to drink. From the river a hillside of the Nairobi National Park raises against the sky.
Standing on Nyati Hill you can see buffalo (Nyati), giraffe, zebra and ostrich. Now and then the baboons pass by and in the night time you hear lions and hyenas. And of course you always will see antelopes, impalas and hartebeests. You will often see giraffes or buffaloes passing just outside the gate on their way to other national parks.
Incomes from the cottages contribute to the operations of a vocational and secondary school for the children who leave the primary school after class 9.
Rudolf Steiner School Mbagathi offers the Rudolf Steiner curriculum up to class 9. The aim is to educate the whole child and to raise children with vitality and initiative for the future. The education develops the child’s thinking (head), feelings (heart) and doing or will (hand).
The primary school is placed 1½ kilometres from Nyati Hill and all guests are invited to visit the school which today has more than 300 pupils of which more than 90 are boarding students.
If you are interested the school will be pleased to show you around and give you a presentation of the school and the Waldorf pedagogy.
You will find Nyati Hill at Masai Lodge Road running from Mbagathi and Ongata Rongai to the Masai Gate of the national park.
From Mbagathi, it is a rough road to Nyati Hill – a road into nature. The distance from Nairobi Centre is about 20 kilometres.
The distance from Ongata Rongai – a quickly growing suburb of Nairobi – is about 5 kilometres and from Gallaria Mall – a shopping centre – it is about 8 kilometres.
Depending on your requirements, we offer different levels of space and privacy.
Our seven cottages are combined into four separate accommodation units:
• Nyati is a single cottage for up to two persons with an all in one sleeping and dining area, kitchen and bathroom with shower and wc.
• Zebra is like Nyati a single cottage for up to two persons with an all in one sleeping and dining area, kitchen and bathroom with shower and wc.
• Cheetah & Impala is a two-cottage unit comprising a sleeping cottage with separate bedroom and bathroom with shower and wc, and a dining cottage with kitchen and living area. This unit offers more space for two persons.
• Giraffe, Lion & Elephant is a three-cottage unit comprising two sleeping cottages with separate bedroom and bathroom with shower and wc, and a large dining cottage with kitchen and living area. This unit is suitable for up to six persons.
All sleeping cottages are with wardrobes and double beds covered with mosquito nets. Bed linen and towels are included.
All kitchens are equipped with electric cookers, fridge and all necessary kitchen utensils. Dining areas are with wooden tables and safari chairs made by local craftsmen on Ngong Road.
The cottages are equipped with wireless internet. Please note that no radio or television is available.
No meals are included but all you’ll need for breakfast is at your disposal free of charge (coffee, tea, cocoa, juice, water, bread, butter, jam, cheese, eggs etc.). Our staff will add water and other supplies on a daily basis.
Soft drinks, beer and wine etc. are charged separately.
When you need to go shopping our taxi service will bring you to Ongata Rongai or Gallaria Mall and back again.
Dining service is available at very reasonable prices. We have made an arrangement with Osoita Lodge about 3 kilometres from Nyati Hill. So if you prefer your dinner served Osoita will deliver any choice of menu. If you like they will even prepare your dinner at our outdoor kitchen and serve it for you in your cottage or by the pool!
Nyati Hill Cottages is built in respect for the environment:
Water is a scarce resource in Africa. We collect rainwater and waste water from the cottages in large tanks and use it for watering purposes. In this way we can keep the place green and beautiful without using valuable drinking water.
Drinking water for the cottages comes from the Rudolf Steiner School’s own borehole which can supply both the school and the cottages.
Getting to Nyati Hill is easy! Fly to Nairobi and we’ll take care of the rest.
From Nairobi Airport it is only 20 kilometers to Nyati Hill. Once you have decided to go you only need to inform us about your flight no. and estimated time of arrival and our taxi service (Bernard) will pick you up at the airport and drive you directly to Nyati Hill. The transport is free of charge – but the driver would appreciate a small tip.
On your arrival Bernard (or the safari guide David) will be waiting for you with a sign bearing your name.
When leaving Bernard will also take you from Nyati Hill to the airport. This transport is included in the accommodation rate as well.
When staying at Nyati Hill Bernard will be at your service if you need any transportation. Please see our website for further information.
The easiest way to get around in Nairobi and surroundings is by car.
If you prefer to drive by yourself there are several car rentals at the airport.
For those who do not want to drive by themselves we have made an arrangement with a local taxi company (Bernard) to drive our guests around.
Transport to and from the airport is free of charge. Other transport is at very reasonable charges. The taxi service will take you to all local activities and restaurants.
If you should fancy a meal at Osoita Lodge the Osoita bus will pick you up – free of charge – and of course bring you back to Nyati Hill again.
If you like to go shopping the taxi service will take you to Nakumatt, Tuskys, Uchumi or other supermarkets and wait for you there until you are ready to return.
Price for taking you to Nakumat at Gallaria Mall (10 kilometers) is 800 KES (approx. 9 USD) and waiting time is 100 KES (approx. 1 USD) per each ½ hour. We advise you to settle the price with Bernhard in advance.
Health and safety:
Kenya is a comparatively safe African destination and main tourist zones are in general safe to visit. However there are still plenty of pitfalls for the unwary or inexperienced traveler.
Please refer to the Lonely Planet official website for other recommendations regarding health and safety including vaccinations.
At Nyati Hill the area is fenced and the gate is locked day and night in order to keep out the wild life. The area around the gate has video surveillance and if needed the alarm system will call watchmen to the place in a few minutes.
Nyati Hill is participating in a day and night watch of traffic in and out of the area. At the start of Mbagathi Road there is a post for the control of all cars and persons getting into the area where the school and Nyati Hill are situated together with an increasing number of houses.
We have visited Kenya and the Nairobi area more than 30 times, and we come back to Nyati Hill Cottages at least twice a year, to help out at the school (with IT and financial advisory).
Nyati Hill Cottages is run in cooperation with the Rudolf Steiner School in Mbagathi with the purpose of contributing to the schools operations
When looking for a place to build a vocational and secondary school the school found this unique seven acre area of land.
Our aim is to combine the schools operations with the possibility for offering visiting tourists an exceptional place to stay.
Kenya 'gets under your skin'. We never cease to enjoy the climate, warm, nice and dry, and the locale people, many of whom are now our friends. Our close relations with the people we corporate with, gives us the opportunity to surround ourself with people we trust - a huge advantage in Africa.
Nyati Hill is quite and peacefull, yet with the city nearby, and that is what makes it so unique. The view to Nairobi National Park makes this, to us, the most beautiful spot in the whole world. And we have travelled all over the world; Asia, Europe, Africa, Australia, South and North America - still, Nyati Hill is special to us.
Come and visit us - we believe you would agree!
Peace and quiet so close to Nairobi. The view and the modern comfort really offers the opportunity to relax and enjoy nature.
