Great House with a Great Location

First of all, let me say that we have been going to Rockport for years. It is one of our family summer vacations that we look forward to all year. So, we have rented a lot of houses in Rockport over the years. That being said, now let me say about this particular house: Wow.

We thought the pictures for this house were great, but we assumed the house would probably not be as good as the photos. We were thrilled to see the house was just as great if not better than the photos. It is just a gorgeous house - - I can't believe the woman who owns it actually rents it out, honestly. We felt like we were in someone's lovely home - - because we WERE. This is not a rental except for two months of the year, so it really doesn't have that "rental" feel to it at all, so it is very different from other houses we have rented in this area. We all just fell in love with being in that house (there were 9 of us).

And it is in a fabulous location; we were able to walk to everything but it still felt really private and separate from the "town feeling" and noise that a lot of "village" houses have. If we turned in one direction at the end of the driveway, we walked to the schools where there are public tennis courts, walking and running track, huge playing fields, and a wonderful playground. If we turned in the opposite direction at the end of the driveway, we were a few blocks from the center of town and all the shops, galleries, restaurants, two town beaches, kayak rental place, Library, Helmut's Strudel (oh, don't miss THAT spot - though being able to walk to it may be a bit dangerous!!), AND the incredible Shalin Liu Performing Center (probably spelled that wrong!). Just to name a few spots.

Rockport is such a fabulous place - - you feel like you have been dropped in a picture postcard and there is just so much natural beauty and so many things to do. I also have to really DISAGREE with someone who complained about having to drop their garbage at the town dump ("transfer station). My kids LOVED going there. You have never seen such a great dump in your life! It is so clean and organized. There are little "houses" there and one is a "Swap Shop" and one is a "Book Shop" and whatever you find that you want to take - take! I found some fabulous beach reading novels in the book house and the kids found some fun stuff in the swap shop. You have to drive right past the place coming in or going out of town - so easy. And like I said: my kids lo

This well maintained home was perfect for 4 couples that convened from different areas of the USA. If you enjoy the quaintness of New England/Rockport, this is a very clean and comfortable place to stay. We found the rooms spacious. The new addition for the kitchen compliments the home and worked well for the 8 of us to gather each morning. I must admit the stairs are narrow to the 2nd and 3rd floor bedrooms. We found this to be part of the charm of homes from that era. The location is ideal for walking into town, the wharves, shops and the beach. All the amenities of your own home are available. Making reservations could not have been simpler with the owner. An added bonus was a very cordial young lad lived in a small cottage on the property and served as a caretaker. Anytime we had questions of the area, restaurants, use of any items in the house......he always graciously got us an answer. This was home away from home.

Summer Place is a rental home that feels much more “home” than “rental.” You first notice it when you see the high-end kitchen, then the finer furnishings, then the infrared grill. My family has rented a home in Rockport for the past several years. We discovered Summer Place in 2010, missed out on it in 2011, but returned again in 2012 with my wife, parents, sister and brother-in-law, and grandparents. The home’s layout is excellent for such a group, with multiple gathering spots and secluded bedrooms: my wife and sister could cook in the huge kitchen, while a card game proceeded in the living room or side patio, while my grandmother took a nap in the bedroom. Perfect. And the large beds are great for multiple couples, unlike the bunk beds, futons, and pull-out couches that one finds in many rentals. Plus, there’s A/C in every bedroom (and every other room). The location is also great, with Bearskin Neck within easy walking distance, even for grandparents. The only amenity we found in other Rockport rentals that was not offered at Summer Place was end-of-week trash removal; Summer Place leaves the renter with the responsibility of taking the trash/recycling to the dump. Still, the overall experience is an A+ and we intend to stay here again!

Thank you so much for the wonderful home away from home! There were seven of us - my daughters, their husbands, and the two granddaughters. One night we were joined by my sister and her husband.

We had a great week - only one day was a rain-out, Monday, and we took the children candle pin bowling. Every other day was a great beach day. The playground at the elementary school at the end of Summer Street was perfect for afternoon walks. We also walked into the village for the bookstore and candy store, and church on Sunday morning.

My daughters took me kayaking (outfitter on Bear Skin Neck, walkable!) for my birthday - the young man that went out with us, Andrew, is going to be a senior at Rockport High - very knowledgeable as well as personable.

The house is ideal for a large family - younger daughter and her husband took the third floor suite, I took one of the rooms at the head of the second floor stairs, grandchildren across from me, and the girls' parents took the big room with the stained glass windows at the end of the hall.

The ability to close off the first floor rooms from the stair case was wonderful - I could be in the kitchen or living room with children, daughters, while the men slept in and no one was disturbed. The kitchen was really the heart of the house for us - the long table was perfect for games as well as sit down suppers.

We used the dining room as the "puzzle table" to work on a big vacation puzzle (finished just before children's bed time on Friday), rather than have any meals there.

All seven of us fit easily in the kitchen for meals, or just outside. The kitchen was amazingly well equipped, important since we are a family of cooks. My daughter got up early on my birthday to make me a pineapple upside down cake - she had brought ingredients, and found everything she needed for equipment in the kitchen - even a Kitchenaid stand mixer. We bought lobsters Thursday for lobster rolls at Roy Moore's, and corn at Latoff's. The awesome gas grill was used three evenings, doing the corn and other vegetables on lobster roll night.

I look forward to making plans for next summer, and hope that we will be able to return!

I stayed with my family and my brothers' family with a total of 9 people in the house. And what a pleasant surprise to find that there was plenty of room to comfortably accommodate us all!
The beauty and elegance of this rental is exactly as witnessed in the photos! It is a short walk into the business district of town where there is plenty of food and shopping along the oceanfront and the local charm is in abundance.
The furniture and beds were impeccably clean and comfortable, and there was plenty of room for dining in. The kitchen was well equipped for those that wish to cook for themselves, with full provisions only a short drive away (10 minutes) into Gloucester. A fancy grill was also available for cooking outdoors.
Plenty of alternative entertainment was available in the rental in the event of inclement weather in the form of classic literature and movies, made available by the proprietor. Laundry facilities were also available in the rental.
And speaking of the proprietor, you will not find another more charming or accommodating! She was very knowledgeable of the area and always available to answer questions or make recommendations for eating establishments or entertainment.
The locally harvested seafood was outstanding and if fine dining is what you seek "My Place By The Ocean" has a breathtaking view from the deck. Other local restaurants had equally tasty dishes and at very affordable prices.
Beaches are nearby- both sand and rock to fit your preferences. If you have transportation there is also a State Park nearby.
My overall assessment is that this rental comes very highly recommended- it was an outstanding visit. My only regret is that I stayed for 1 week instead of longer. EXCELLENT!!!
