This cottage is a tardis.
Great open plan lounge with huge tv and comfy so
Wood burning stove quick to light and cosy.
Great kitchen facilities and open to the lounge.
Well designed open space downstairs.
Really good mattresses on huge beds upstairs.
Great shower pressure.
Garden bathed in sunshine and outdoor eating was welcome.
Really neat cottage.
Great walks down to the creek.
Recommend the oyster bar and the company shed for oysters.
Book ahead and go for the large native oysters.

We stayed for a long weekend at Anchorage Mews and thoroughly enjoyed it. The cottage is clean, spacious and in excellent condition - it has a lovely outdoor area, a cosy wood burner and the beds were very comfortable! It's also in a great location, on a very picturesque road just a minute walk from the harbour. We were a group of six adults, but I imagine it would also be a great place for children. We're already planning our next visit!

A lovely weekend

Hilary did an excellent job maintaining contact with the various family members involved in the booking. We arrived on a dark and extremely windy February night and the house was warm and inviting. The open plan downstairs is great for spending time and good for kids as there's nothing that's hugely breakable or difficult to clean. The wood burner is fun. The property is overall very clean and quite well maintained, we needed to wedge the airing cupboard door shut as it was banging and some of the external weatherboard was also banging against the house near the master bed window, but then the wind was about 80mph all night so you wouldn't expect silence. It wasn't a problem. The beds are comfortable and the bathrooms are nice. The location is brilliant, on a quiet little road 30 seconds walk from Mersea seafront. The company shed and the oyster bar on the seafront are great, but if you do not book you will not get in, so don't bother trying. The oyster bar does take-away, which, given how close it is, you can do on foot without the food getting cold on the way home. We weren't in Mersea for long so all I can say is that it's nice to go for a walk, but the fields are VERY SLIPPERY if it's been raining. Watch out. The beer brewed on the island is very good - the brewery closed 10 minutes before we got there (boo) but the beer is available in the Co-op. Overall, I would say Anchorage Mews is very good value. Come if you have kids and want a nice, comfortable, functional modern house as a base. If you want to stay in a fairytale land of period rustic charm...look elsewhere (the Mews is I would guess a 1980s development, but very sympathetically done).

Christmas at Anchorage Mews

We had a family Christmas at Anchorage Mews. It was true to its description and some nice touches added to the experience - a Champagne bucket and glasses awaited us, a dressed Christmas tree and a bottle of milk in the fridge for the first cup of tea. The log burner, with a fireguard for families with young children and logs supplied by the owner, is lovely for a Winter getaway. There was a large comfy sofa (as our party consisted of 5 adults, a 2nd sofa rather than 4 wicker chairs would have been better) a decent sized tv and a sound system. The kitchen was well-equipped - we just had to borrow a carving fork and buy an additional chopping board, but we were catering for Christmas! The bedrooms were spacious with quality bed linen and sufficient storage space. The 2 shower rooms were very clean - the towels provided were ok but we would take a couple of extra larger ones next time. The property itself was well maintained, with a car parking space at the front of the house, but was let down a little by the untidiness of adjacent properties. However, it is in a good location, a short walk to the long shingle beach (fab walks which blew the cobwebs away), restaurants (Oyster Bar an old firm favourite), yacht and sailing clubs and pubs. The high street is a 15-20 minute walk away, which has an excellent butcher, green grocery, delicatessen and bakers. We are looking forward to our next visit in the Summer when we will be able to make use of the small garden, which has a raised decked area with table and chairs.
