Southport Vacation Rental cottage

We read of the property in a travel magazine review, and found it to be just as advertised: a secluded and cozy waterfront cottage. The view of the harbor changes with the tides and adds to the sense of peace and tranquility.

Bring your kayak and launch from the front lawn. We took an informative tour around islands in the Sheepscot River, and paddled up close to harbor seals. The next day we hiked a number of well-marked conservation area trails overlooking harbors and inlets of the area.

Though we had a rainy week and probably spent more time at the cottage than originally planned, we still did not feel confined. The quaint and compact accommodations were fine for two. With only one bath adjacent to the living room, it would have been an uncomfortable experience for three or four people.

The four-room cottage offers two cramped bedrooms upstairs, and a large living/dining room and a well-equipped galley-size kitchen downstairs. The furniture was well-worn but comfortable, as was the bed we used. The other bedroom had a long clothes rod that easily accommodated our vacation wardrobe.

The lawn was well-groomed and the yard nicely landscaped. The kitchen and utensils were clean, and the bathroom was adequate, although we wish there had been better quality towels and soap provided.

We enjoyed the walking routes nearby and the well-stocked general store in West Southport, a short walk away. Biking in the area is challenging because of narrow roads and irregular, sometimes steep terrain. However there is still less traffic on the island than in town.

Southport has a sense of remoteness, but is really only an island by definition: downtown Boothbay Harbor is only 5 miles away. We recommend the Boat House Bistro for great pub fare and the Thistle Inn for fine upscale dining.

The owner was very gracious, helpful, attentive and prompt. We were very pleased with our stay, and recommend this property to those who wish to get away from it all.
