Built in 1963, this rustic modern 980 square ft. ranchette has an airy floor plan, big windows, concrete floors, exposed beam ceilings and tons of privacy. It's a comfy place to stay a while and dig into creative projects in the peace and quiet of open space, eclectic vintage modern furnishings and artisan objects. Located on partially fenced acreage on a sparsely populated mesa, this getaway offers sweeping views of Joshua Tree National Park and Copper Mountain. Achieve clarity by looking out of big picture windows to catch the sun or moon rising over the foothills below. Step out onto the patio for starry night skies. Ten minute access to the park encourages spontaneous natural outings. Or get into local culture: the town of Joshua Tree is only five minutes away.
The kitchen comes (equipped by foodies!) with cookware and inspiring cookbooks. You'll find an assortment of cooking oils, spices, coffee, teas, and other staples to get you started. Basic cable, wi-fi plus an assortment of CDs and DVDs are provided for days when you just don't feel like leaving the house. The house is ideally suited for one person or a couple but should friends arrive for a sleep-over, extra bedding and beds are stashed in the closet.
Nestled in the shade of the roomy back porch, the jetted hot tub awaits tired hikers in need of rejuvenation, and stressed city dwellers in need of a calming soak. A xeric garden represents a sampling of yuccas, agaves, acacias, and various cactii from deserts around the world.
Over half of Getaway visitors are return guests, with multiple return stays of up to four months.
The surrounding area caters to a wide range of interests: athletic (world class rock climbing and trail running in addition to hiking, and horseback riding for all levels); musical (clubs and outdoor festivals); artistic (endless photo ops whether your slant is scenic or ironic); consumer (shopping from junking to better mid-century furnishings, cowboy stores, designer outlet malls, and a couple of fantastic nurseries); culinary (cute weekly farmer’s market, two health food stores and a wonderfully edited gourmet shop all supplement the standard grocery fare), mystic (retreats, drumming circles, Buddhist Temple and at least one UFO vortex); and cultural (earnest live theatre and friendly art galleries).
Finally, if grandma comes to visit with her lady friends from the biker club, and if you are feeling either lucky or tired of peaceful isolation, a short trip to Morongo in the lower desert for a little casino action always makes for a bit of lowbrow fun.
This house is priced to encourage longer-term stays. Sit a spell, or come and go! With lots of space in the closet and garage, this is a spot to make yourself completely at home.

As a set designer, I'm in love with the visual drama of the California high desert. I was so excited when I found my little spot in the Mojave....I couldn't wait to start working with the palette of homestead architecture, native plants, seasons, and vistas that Joshua Tree offers.
My hope is that the resulting home reflects the unassuming laid-back lifestyle that I value but sometimes find difficult to enjoy in LA, while also reflecting a respect for nature, warmth, a bit of humor, and relaxation with the necessary flourishes (good art, good books, wi-fi and espresso!).

There are four reasons that I chose Joshua Tree as a location for a second home. Practically speaking, JT is only a few hours drive from major cultural hubs and as such, it's a place that I can frequent often and on short notice. I was also drawn to the vibrant local scene. And then there's the unbelievable landscape of the national park. But even more than all of that, my real motivation had to do with the inexplicable sense of tranquility and giddiness that comes over me as I leave the pavement when nearing the property.
The best spot in this house-I think- revolves around the big dining table even though the table itself is not the amazing thing. This is where I've served many meals for groups of friends who are all too busy to get together back home, wherever back home might be. I often design while sitting at this table, alternating between staring out to the view for ideas, punching out emails, and scribbling on messy stacks of paper. From the reports that guests have given me, this table has also served in the writing of songs, all-night nickel poker, quilt-making, violin practice, the completion of crossword puzzles, the planning of road trips, and one marriage proposal. I like to think that guests will find the house to be just like that table: ground zero for whatever they want to be doing most!
Also the stillness of the nights on the mesa...just incredible...but I could go on and on.
