A view from the pool and a funky beach house!

If you want privacy, comfort and a gorgeous view in Puako, but aren't looking for high-end finishes, this funky, charming, and very livable beach house fits the bill. It was the perfect property for us. We loved cooling off in the pool while looking through a frame of palm trees at the ocean, visiting the turtles in the tidepools among the lava rocks, and having dinner right on the ocean front each night. Snorkeling and scuba diving right off the shore was excellent (bring reef shoes or dive booties unless you have very tough feet- there are urchins and sharp rocks on the way into the water). We loved the house so much we are already saving up for a return trip (and dreaming that we live there!).
The entire front of the house opens up with large screened doors, so the breezes are fabulous and nature surrounds you. Watching the stars while floating in the pool each night was a treat before going to sleep in the comfy bed. As a couple, we felt that the home was the perfect size. Every evening we made lilikoi cocktails and relaxed in the lounge chairs in the yard to watch the sunset. Every morning we had breakfast at the picnic table and coffee on the lava rocks, watching the francolins waddle across the lawn and the turtles waking up and swimming out to sea.
The kitchen, while older, is very well equiped. We made almost all of our meals at home (loved Da Fish Shack nearby for buying super fresh fish to grill and heading the Kamuela for groceries) and found every cooking gadget or utensil we needed. We don't play tennis, but kids would love the tennis court, the basketball hoop and the croquet set for the wide lawn. We even found some ripe mangoes that had fallen from the trees.
If you want impersonal resort-style luxury with granite counters and a spa bathroom, this isn't the place for you. If you want nature, views, shabby-chic comfort and an old-time Hawaiian vibe, you will find this home charming and relaxing. The neighborhood is quiet, friendly, and great for walks or jogging (either on the road or on the lava beach).
The management company is wonderful and responsive. We had a plumbing problem on a Saturday evening and it was taken care of with complete friendliness and competence in time for us to have a late dinner. I can't say enough good things about Aloha Debbie and their helpfulness and good cheer.
Overall, a wonderful beach property!
