**** CLIFDEN TOWN****

Clifden Town is the capital of Connemara one of the most scenic regions in Ireland. Established in the early 1800’s at Clifden Bay, it follows the classic 19th century layout: oval in plan, with 3 principal streets – Market Street, Main Street and Bridge Street, a Market Square, a fine Bridewell or gaol, courthouse and harbour.

Clifden today is a vibrant and cultural town which has retained its historic roots while offering a wide range of services and facilities. You will find colourful streets with a great selection of small local food shops – (fishmongers, butchers, fruit and vegetable store, delicatessens and a bakery), numerous craft and gift shops, art galleries and exhibitions and other interesting shops including antique shops, designer clothes shops, jewellery and vintage shops.

There are 9 restaurants and 10 pubs with music sessions each evening and good bar food. On the practical side there are four supermarkets, including Aldi and Lidl, which are open until 9pm (mon-sat), two banks, three chemists, two petrol stations, two churches and a post office.

Set on the edge of the Atlantic, the surrounding scenery is spectacular, and waiting to be discovered.

*****CONNEMARA******

A vast coastal region world renowned for its wild and stunning scenery, and magical light. It is dotted with small villages and historical sites. To the north is stretches to the border of Mayo and the town of Westport is 45 mins. drive from Clifden. To the east it reaches to Galway city, which is one hours drive from Clifden and well worth a visit. To the south is the Connemara Gaelteacht area- an Irish speaking area which is famous for its coral strands.

THINGS TO DO...........

Your stay includes use of a private leisure centre located in the Station House Hotel - 3 mins walk from Church Hill

It includes a heated indoor swimming pool, Jacuzzi, Sauna, Steam room and Gym - Open 7 days all year round.

**WALKING AND CYCLING **

The area is a walker’s paradise whether following a planned route or just ambling along country roads and beaches, of which there are many. You will find a folder of 20 different Connemara walks in your house or follow the road signs around the countryside which indicate good routes for walking or cycling.

Bicycles can be hired throughout the year from Mannions shop, Clifden.

***** A LITTLE HISTORY******

The O’Grady Family purchased the Sunnybank estate in 1977. One of the oldest buildings in the locality, the Main House was built by John D’arcy who founded Clifden town in 1823. During 2002, Sunnybank House was extensively renovated into a luxurious holiday property and offers an outstanding holiday experience for larger groups with a private outdoor heated pool, sauna, extensive gardens.

We purchased Sunnybank Cottage in 2004. It is a listed building and again one of the original houses of the town. It was completely renovated whilst retaining all the best of its original features and is now a luxurious and cosy version of the original cottage with the best of modern conveniences.

Charming cottage, great location

Sunnybank Cottage was ideal for us: two king en suite bedrooms for 2 couples. (we didn't use the smaller 3rd bedroom.), and a short walk into the center of Clifden, a picturesque village with good shops, galleries, and pubs, The cottage has been thoughtfully renovated, preserving features like the old wood floors and peat fireplace, but totally modernizing baths with good showers and fixtures. It was well-equipped, with a 5 burner gas stove and all necessary dishes and utensils in the kitchen, good big towels and cozy, comfortable beds, Although it was chilly when we were there, the back garden, abloom with roses and other flowers, would be pleasant in warmer weather.
The owners are more like hospitable hosts than landlords. When we arrived we were welcomed with fresh flowers, smoked salmon, cheeses, bread, chocolates, and a bottle of wine. Shane came over to show us how things worked and laid a fire.
We were there during the County Galway fleadh, so the town was full of musicians and Irish dancers who performed in the pubs at night and on the town square on Saturday afternoon.
All in all, we thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Tips: Guy's Pub has good fish and chips; Mitchell's was wonderful for fine dining; Walsh's Bakery for coffee and yummy baked goods. If you are interested in art, visit Whitethorn Gallery; for Irish cheese, go to Connemara Hamper. O'Daleigh Jewellers has an extensive selection of silver jewelry, both traditional Celtic designs and contemporary ones, at reasonable prices.

Perfect combination of comfort and location

Sunnybank Cottage is the perfect combination of comfort (- beautifully designed, open fire, cosy but spacious, everything you need is to hand etc) and location (- amazingly quiet and peaceful but just 50yds or so from the centre of Clifden so easy to get to the shops, local pub etc). So, if you want to get out and about, it's the perfect location to explore the region from or, if you want to hunker down on a rainy day, it couldn't have been more comfortable!
We rarely go back to the same place but this is actually the second time that we've stayed at Sunnybank Cottage and, if I were going back to Connemara, I'd definitely try to stay there again. It's definitely one of the best self catering places we've ever stayed in - it felt like a bit of luxury which managed to strike the balance of being just right for grown ups and kids.

We spent two wonderful weeks in beautiful Sunnybank cottage. The house itself is so cosy, the interior makes you totally feel at home at once. The location is great, so near to the centre of Clifden, to the pubs and shopping facilities. We often used the near-by tennis court, fitness centre and pool.
The owner were very helpful and adviced us very interesing sights and places. Great people, really!
We enjoyed every single minute in Clifden and can only highly recommend it! We are still sad to have left!

SunnyBank Cottage - a home from home...

We had a fabulous time at this property. It was exactly as described on the internet. It was very clean, beautifully decorated - simple, elegant contemporary feel with lots of character. Would highly recommend this property. Great location - walkiing distance to restaurants, shops, pubs but far enough away to have a quiet sleep-in, the morning after!

Owners were perfect - never saw them! Just dropped off some addtitional linen and left us alone. Lots of local information provided and given the quality of the property and the ease of the booking process it was good value for money.

Wouldn't receommend the house if you have children under 4 years old as garden is steep and has steps which could be hazardous to little people!

Bed linen, mattresses, pillows and towels good quality. More than adequate bathroom toiletries provided. Wecome pack included a reasonable white rioja, lovely irish brown bread and smoked salmon. Much appreiciated after our journey.

Nearest beach is 1.5km but best one is half hour drive away. But well worth the drive. Some great art galleries, antique shops and womens clothes shops in the town. Easy to cook in the house - more than enough equipment in the kitchen for even the best Jamie Oliver's.
There is a freezer as well as sepereate fridge - big help we thought. Local resaturants well priced and good value for money if you prefer eating out some nights. For casual dining we thougth Guys was good - decor was fun. Check out the lamp shades! For more formal dining we liked Mitchells.

Have fun if you go - we did!

This house was great for a small family. It's really comfortable and has a lovely open plan kitchen / sitting room with a big sofas and an old open fire....! The owner, Shane, went out of his way to make sure we had everything we needed, particularly for the children. It made our holiday stress-free and very relaxing in this home away from home.

Notes:
A fantastic property which our guests keep returning to. There is an open drive way with parking for 2-3 cars, with ample space behind and in front of the house and the original front gate into the front garden. The utility room has a washing machine, separate dryer, iron and ironing board, clothes horse, pegs, extra sink and freezer. The double kitchen doors lead out into the lovely private patio area, where you can cook or just sunbathe, surrounded by old rose beds and small herb bed and steps leading up through the back garden to a private wooded area of about a 1/4 acre. The back garden and patio area are fenced and gated and suitable for children.
