Photos and Description of the Negrar vacation farmhouse rental
4 bedrooms, sleeps 6 to 8; ideal for walking, wine-tasting and sight-seeing.

Perfect for a relaxing rural holiday, or as a base to explore the natural beauties and cultural riches of the Veneto. 'Il Castello' is situated on the spur of a vine-clad hill in Valpolicella, a famous wine-growing region of Italy. Our lovingly restored and attractively furnished 17th century farmhouse is only 20 minutes from Verona, one of Italy's most beautiful cities, with its famous opera festival in the Roman Arena, and about 40 minutes from the beaches and spectacular scenery of Lake Garda. It also offers ready access to the mountains and to the many historic and beautiful cities of the Veneto (Venice, Mantua, Vicenza, Ferrara, Padua etc). Opening onto a peaceful courtyard, the house has a large living/dining room, a well-equipped kitchen (with dishwasher), four double bedrooms, two bathrooms and a laundry room with washing machine and third WC. A wisteria-covered terrace, with stunning views of the mountains towards Lake Garda, provides a wonderful eating-out and sitting area.

Il Castello: The property is part of a large seventeenth-century farmhouse complex built around a shared courtyard. The main farmhouse, on the opposite side of the courtyard, is occupied by permanent Italian residents, including the owner's brother-in-law, Hugh Ward-Perkins and his Italian wife, Paola, who are both bilingual, and are always very ready to help with problems and queries.

The accommodation: The accommodation is in two parts, either side of the impressive entrance portico into the courtyard. The main part includes a large downstairs sitting/dining-room, and an attractive and well-appointed kitchen; upstairs is the main double bedroom, a bathroom tiled in local pink marble, and a second smaller bedroom with two beds.

The other part of the accommodation, the ‘Fienile’, is a converted hayloft. Upstairs, reached by an external staircase, is a double bedroom with spectacular views across the valley, and an attached shower-room with WC. Downstairs is another double bedroom/playroom, most suitable as a children's bedroom, with double doors opening onto the courtyard. Next to it is a laundry-room, with a washing machine, sink and WC.

It is possible for those staying in the Fienile to be reasonably autonomous, which makes it well-suited to having family or friends to stay. The division of the house also makes it pleasant to use in smaller numbers.

Outside Areas: There are two sitting-out areas with shade - one under a portico on the courtyard side; the other on the valley side under a pergola planted with wisteria, oleanders and a fig tree.

The courtyard is shared with the other owners, and provides a pleasant sitting-out area and a safe and sheltered play space for children, with an olive tree, fig tree, and the original large stone washing basins filled with running water from a stream which runs underneath the courtyard. There are chairs and a stone table for eating out on the terrace, as well as deck-chairs, and a barbecue.

Il Castello is peacefully situated, about 1 kilometre above the small town of Negrar, near Verona, which has excellent specialist food shops (butcher, greengrocer, baker etc.), a weekly market, and a large supermarket close by. There are lots of fantastic restaurants and pizzerias in the area. Negrar is the centre of the famous Valpolicella wine-growing region, characterised by excellent wineries and romantic medieval churches, set against a backdrop of spectacular mountain scenery. Verona (about 20 minutes away), built on the banks of the River Adige, is one of Italy's most beautiful and civilised cities, with its Roman bridge and amphitheatre, world-famous Opera Festival in the Roman Arena di Verona, medieval castle, a host of wonderful churches, and stylish bars, restaurants and shops. Il Castello is perfectly located for access to Verona, the beaches of Lake Garda, and to Mantua, Vicenza and Venice, but its hillside location ensures tranquillity and a degree of cool in the heat of summer.

Other Activities: Arena di Verona's world-famous open air Opera Festival in the Roman Amphitheatre. Vinitaly (7-10 April 2013) - a major annual wine fair with exhibitors from all over the world. Personalised wine-tasting tours of small local vineyards; discover the delights of Amarone, Ripasso, & Recioto and buy direct from the dedicated individuals who make them. Eat in down-to-earth local trattorias or Michelin-starred restaurants. Soak up the atmosphere of some of Italy's least discovered but most beautiful medieval and Renaissance cities. Visit the villas of Palladio. Swim in the dramatic mountain scenery of Lake Garda. Let off steam at Gardaland Water Park.

We had a FANTASTIC time at your house and it was perfect for our needs. The wisteria covered patio was superb for sitting, talking, eating and drinking, laughing. Very much enjoyed Negrar, so non touristy. Christine Leith, June 2004.
Just a note to say what a great holiday Jane and I had at Il Castello. It was just as we remembered it, the 'vendemmia' was in full swing...Thanks for providing the perfect location. Nick Hickman, September 2004.
I just want to let you know about the lovely time we had at Il Castello. The place was perfect, the views were stunning...Your brother-in-law Hugh could not have been nicer or more helpful - from directions to restaurant recommendations to Francesca's wine. Janice Owens, Jan 2005.
We had a really wonderful time in the area and found the house perfectly equipped for all our needs. I was dying to tell your next guests about Enoteca in Negrar. What a place! The food, the wine ,the setting all superb. Elaine Davies, July 2005.

Il Castello, Negrar, Italy

Our family (2 adults, 3 children aged 13, 16 and 19) had a wonderful week's holiday, staying at Il Castello and using it as a base to explore the delights of Verona, Venice, Lake Garda and the local area. The house is very characterful and full of charm. We were there during a cold spell at the start of April, so we lit a log fire each evening which was really lovely. It is peaceful with super views over the valley to the front and up to the hills behind. We all enjoyed watching the lizards sun themselves on nearby olive trees when the sun came out and watching and listening to the birds in the garden outside. The owners were very communicative from the start and sent us very detailed instructions for everything, including very good recommendations for the best local supermarket, restaurants and where to go to buy logs. We tried two of the recommended local restaurants, the Pizzeria alle Vigne and L’Enoteca in Negrar - both served some of the most delicious food we've ever tasted. Negrar has a real feel of community about it, and all the people were very friendly and helpful, especially when they realised that we spoke no Italian. We would definitely like to return to Il Castello another time. Next time we'll book Mario for his highly recommended wine tour as Il Castello is literally surrounded by vineyards!

I just wanted you to know we saw the caretaker with her adorable grandson this morning and she returned our deposit... We had a wonderful tour with Mario yesterday ... He and Anne were wonderful. We left the white and black cat there although I would have taken the white cat with me if I could!

Next time we will do a walking tour with Mario. The castle is beautiful and wonderfully appointed. The walking trails are beautiful. So thank you so very much.

We really got the flavor of the geography going up to the small vineyards. I loved seeing the cows, grassy fields and donkeys.

Beautiful setting, lovely house, fantastic holiday

5 of 5
Submitted: January 2, 2013 Stayed: May 2012
Myself and seven friends had a fantastic week here during late spring - cannot recommend it highly enough. A really beautiful corner of the world, with an incredible view across the valley. The house has a very peaceful courtyard and a lovely shaded private dining area outside, which was great for a large group of us.

We were able to use the house as a base for exploring the area, visiting Venice, Verona and Lake Garda easily as day trips. Both Venice and Verona were stunning, but small enough that you could get a real feel for each of them in just a day. Having a car was very helpful, and Venice was really easily accessible by train. Lake Garda was beautiful - crystal clear water and warm to swim in, with cheap private beaches easy to access.

The local town of Negrar was very welcoming, with a great bar for watching the Champions League Final in! Also a fantastic range of food within the bakeries, butchers and supermarkets close by, and a beautiful church.

The house was spotless, with four large bedrooms and plenty of room for all of us. There is a large living room with a great fireplace, and a kitchen which was perfect for making large meals in. For eating out, there is a great restaurant ten minutes walk away, slightly hidden - the house guide book was very helpful with this, and we had two fantastic meals here, spurred on by some excellent Italian cooking.

My personal highlight of the week was walking up the rest of the hill above the house, aiming to reach the cross at the top. Walking up the road through the fields of olive and cherry trees was a great experience, with fantastic views as a reward at the top. If you went slightly off the beaten track, there were paths leading towards caves and even higher points - again with stunning views of the valley below.

I would definitely recommend this house, and in fact have already done so to several friends. I would very happily go back and hope to soon!
Owner's Response: Thank you very much for this detailed and appreciative review. We are delighted that you had such a great holiday at Il Castello. It's good to know that the house was spotless (our housekeeper, Fiorenza, has very high standards!) and that you found the kitchen so well-equipped for cooking for large numbers. We're very pleased that you enjoyed the incredible views - we love the location and enjoy sharing it's beauty with our guests. It sounds like you managed to do quite a lot of sight-seeing during your stay (a good idea to take the train to Venice), and that the house worked well for you as a base to explore from. We greatly look forward to your return visit. Come back soon!
