Located within nearly 1 hectare of gardens is the 19th century stone building, La Pairiere. Beautifully renovated to include today's modern luxuries, but conserving it's old world charm.
Spend the long summer evenings enjoying a glass of wine in the stoned courtyard, take bike rides along the Mayenne stopping to re-fuel on the wonderful crepes in Grez Neuville or simply take time to relax in the tranquil surrounds of the property taking in some of the most beautiful scenery the French countryside has to offer.
La Pairiere is located in the broad valley of the Mayenne River, shortly before it flows into the Loire. It is the area the French call 'la douce France.' The nearby countryside rolls gently from forested slopes dotted with châteaux to fields ablaze in season with sunflower, rapeseed and grains; from rich riverside pastures and the occasional orchard to quaint villages roofed in the region's distinguishing slate tiles.
A particular local delight is the riverside drive (or cycle or walk - the slopes are not daunting) along the picturesque routes des écluses, which connect the lock villages. One of our favorite meals out is here - simple crêpes and local cider on a river terrace at nearby Grez-Neuville, a lock village that also serves as a base for tourist boats, some of which are available for hire by the half-day and day. An array of local markets allows you to treat you taste buds to wonderful fresh produce, and there is no end to the list of places to visit, whether it be château, museums, medieval towns or even the mystical sounds of the Gregorian monks chanting in the abbey at solemmes.
We had a lovely time at La Pairiere and I can wholly recommend it.
We stayed in the main farmhouse (the smaller converted barn was being renovated at the time), which is wonderful and spacious -- very traditional downstairs, with a big kitchen and living room, plus several bedrooms, and with a converted second floor/loft which has a lovely main bedroom with en-suite bathroom, plus two other bedrooms (one of which of daughter slept in) and loads of toys and books for kids, so great for families.
One of the best features of the place is the big garden -- loads of space for kids to run around, play football etc, cows in the neighboring field which was also a big thrill for our four-year old, plus a nice little copse of trees in the middle of the garden providing a bit of shade and great for having outdoor lunches -- it really is idyllic, my partner and I were reminiscing about this just the other day!
In terms of area, you're at the western edge of the Loire Valley, which means some of the more popular chateaus are a bit of a trek for a day trip. But there are still plenty like Langeais within easy reach, plus the very nice town of Angers, which is worth a visit. And to be honest, you will probably want to spend a fair bit of time simply relaxing at La Pairiere.
La Pairière is 800 meters from the village of Montguillon, which has a small restaurant/bar and shop, and where bikes can be rented. The nearest supermarket is at St Martin du Bois (5km) with a much larger choice of shopping, markets and restaurants at Château-Gontier and le Lion d 'Angers (both 11km). Angers and its department stores, museums and TGV station is just 31 kilometers. You could easily spend a week or more discovering the châteaux of the Mayenne - often more charming than their more grandiose Loire neighbors - and finding such hidden treasures as the sublime chanting of the monks at the Abbaye de Solesmes. Further afield, the cathedral of Chartres, the car museum of Le Mans, the mysterious stone monoliths of Morbihan, the coastline of Brittany and all the châteaux of the Loire are just some of the famous attractions within easy day touring range.
