About Laura Thomson Trinks

We purchased this property in 2006 and have enjoyed many repeat renters over the years. Unfortunately, our little cottage was damaged by Superstorm Sandy in 2012. In May of 2013 we tore the original house down and waited out the busy rental season to begin reconstruction. Since we were starting from scratch, we decided to max out the allowable increase in square footage and added a second floor. During the process FEMA changed their guidelines and requirements for new properties and we were required to lift the new house much higher than originally anticipated. Basically, what was once a one floor home is now three stories high! We live in CT a little over an hour from Old Lyme. Paul, who has been a homebuilder professionally, oversaw the construction himself. We’re the first new waterfront construction home, in our immediate area, in over 50 years! It's been a long road but we think, and we hope you and your family will feel the same, the results have been worth it!

Laura Thomson Trinks purchased this house in 2006

Why Laura Thomson Trinks chose Old Lyme

We love the area because of the family atmosphere. Paul's son owns the cottage across the street and our grandchildren love coming here every Summer. We've been extremely fortunate in getting to know a lot of people who having been vacationing at Hawks Nest Beach for generations. Lastly we have, bar none, the best neighbors ever!

What makes this house unique

With the new house we added a 2nd full bathroom and increased the size of the kitchen. Additionally, we added 2 decks. Perhaps most remarkable is the upper deck outside of both upstairs bedrooms as the view of the water from this vantage point is better than we ever could have imagined.

Nice relaxing beach front cottage

  • 4 of 5

This was our second year at this cottage and it was again a nice relaxing time. It's great to sit out on the deck or porch and enjoy the views and fresh air and with the deck and porch on almost the same level people can talk to each other no matter where you are. No need to bring chairs as there are plenty, so that helps with the packing. The house has nice air flow and cieling fans in every room which is nice. The table on the porch makes a great game or dining spot where you can still see the beach and feel the sea breeze. We loved it again this year and will go back again.

Owner's Response: It's wonderful to hear! We think our place is great and try to think of what renters would want/need, but it's terrific to know that it's enjoyed and appreciated. That's what the cottage is there for!

Execeptional Beach House, Exceptional Location

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I have rented a cottage in this location for many seasons.. It has always been delightful. Last year, however, we had the pleasure to rent the newly built cottage and it is spectacular. First, the location is the best. Your backyard is Long Island Sound! Then there is the vacation home. The living area is spacious, the kitchen is huge, good for the home or gourmet cook. The porch just out side the living area is a beautiful place for meals, while over looking the spectacular view of the Sound. The outside deck has the same wonderful view, and is a pleasant place to read, have a glass of wine, and just RELAX!

There are two bathrooms, one downstairs, with a convenient shower and a larger, well-appointed bath upstairs. There is a deck off the two bedrooms upstairs. Once again, the view is amazing and is a great place for your morning coffee or tea. This place is good for a couple (like us) or for family with children.

Old Lyme has nice restaurants, a museum, and good fishing, crabbing, and nature walks. It is convenient to Grocery Stores and Package Stores. But you do not need venture outside of this home and beach to have a GREAT vacation. I would recommend this vacation home to anyone looking for an exceptional vacation.

Wonderful Week

  • 5 of 5

We had two rainy days, but the rest of the week was beautiful. Great place for a run, crabbing, kayaking, fishing and just floating around. Plenty of kids and activities for all ages. Our cottage was clean, and had everything we needed to get started for a great week. Owners very easy to work with. Did a lot of shopping in Old Saybrook, and the outlet Malls. Great Dinner at the Hideaway. Will definitely come back.

We were very impressed and pleased with the condition of the rental property and location. Everything exceeded our expectations and we would certainly consider returning for another vacation. The owners of the rental property were very friendly and accommodating.

Owner's Response: Thanks so much for the positive feedback; it's so good to hear. We recognize that people have many choices when planning their vacation and that now more than ever, money is tight. With that said, we strive to make our cottage a fun, relaxing place to be, a good value and an atmosphere in which fond memories can be made. Thanks again!

Hawks Nest Beach Cottage Review

  • 5 of 5

Beautiful cottage on Long Island Sound in a cozy neighborhood of vacation houses. Very comfortable 3 bedroom / 1 bath cottage with screen in porch right on the beach. Fully equipped with all the essentials, including gas grille, good sized deck with plenty of chairs, plenty of pots and dishes with a large lobster pot, and games and puzzles. Views and sounds of the surf were very soothing. So close at 1 hour drive and is so much better than fighting traffic and the long commute to the Cape. My wife and two teenaged boys loved it and we will definately look into going back next year.

Constructive comments:

- Bring water shoes as the beach and surf sand is on the rocky side

- Be careful on the rock jetty in front of the house in low tide, as the rocks when exposed are very slippery.

- Bring a canoe, raft or kayake in order to take advantage of being right on the water (there is a rental place close by on Rt 156, but bring if you already have)

Go on a sunset sail on a old-time schooner leaving from Mystic for a memorable evening. Take a hike a local park or play tennis at the court down the street. Walk to Sound View for freshly made donuts in the morning and gelato after dinner. Information can be found for these and other activities, attractions and restaurants in our in-cottage guidebook. Also, our cottage is located just down the street from the Hawk's Nest general store; great for that last minute item or souvenir.
