We added a 5th bedroom with a king size bed and large bunk bed that easily sleeps adults as well as children. The lower bunk transforms into a full size bed/futon.

A clear upgrade made to the furniture, fixtures & equipment on property including a full kitchen remodel and improvement was completed this winter. New Mahogany furniture in the master bedroom such as the hand carved Tahitian Mahogany 4 Poster Bed and hand carved Mahogany Plantation High Back Sofa with extra cushioning are highlights of our upgrade.

Guests will also now benefit from a Cell Phone Booster that has been installed on property as well as outdoor lighting along the path and garden from the main house. Landscaping continues to be a major part of our property's highlights and we invested heavily in the fauna along all the walking paths including to the new 5th bedroom of the lower house.

Chasing after GREEN via technology thanks to our on-site LEED certified architect - Bryan!

2010 Boasted the arrival renewable materials (bamboo, teak, ipe, etc..), guest friendly vegetable and fruit garden including Valencia Orange & Banana trees, Herb Garden, Tomato Plants and many other edible veggies & fruits all maintained by our renewable gray-water system and filtered cisterns! Giving back to this great island that give us great pleasure. Come and see...

About Katie

Tarta Family property

Paula & Joe are not only the pair with the plan and vision for this villa but also head the extensive Tarta Family including their four daughter's whom the house was named after. It is a family endeavour with Katie, their oldest, and her husband Bryan as caretakers/architect of the property along with their 2 year old son Gabriel who adds his general happiness to the mix and new baby due Thanksgiving. Maggie and her husband Chris live in Mass with their son R.J. (and baby due Christmas) and offer the legal and IT services while Betsy, the interior designer of the crew, makes yearly improvements to the details inside. Susan & her new husband Mike, make frequent visits adding flare to every aspect of the property as she represents our dramatic side his gifts as both accountant and carpenter are very useful.

Photo taken at Ms. Lucy's Restaurant in Fris Bay past Coral Bay

Katie purchased this villa in 2004
Why Katie chose Fish Bay

Our family always loved St. John and the Virgin Islands both US and British. We bought on St. John because it was the least developed of the VI and had the most character. The island is roughly the size of Manhattan, an island we spent many years traveling to & from, but the population is only about 5,000. There is so much to see and enjoy here that you are always entertained by the beauty and never overwhelmed by the people. Come hike our trails, swim in our ocean and share our vistas.

What makes this villa unique

We designed the house with families in mind. When my family is here there are about 15 of us plus 3 dogs and a cat. Ages range from 93 to infancy and people's interests vary from wanting nothing to do but lounge by the pool, to watching old movies on the TV with AC on to going snorkeling at a remote beach. We needed a place where everyone could feel comfortable and not crowded. The multi-tiered levels allows us to be together without being on top of each other, while the expansive deck by the pool gives us plenty of room to all be together for some activity and meals. This property is about family, friends and finding some freedom during your visit.

Week in St John with 8 adults and 3 kids

5 of 5
Submitted: January 24, 2013 Stayed: November 2012
We rented the villa for a the week of Thanksgiving. Here is just a little review on our week. We landed and rented a car in St Thomas by the time we actually got to the ferry it was getting dark so by the time we actually arrived on St John it was pitch black. Katie had left us some very specific directions but if you have never been to the island it is pitch black so you really cannot see anything and it is steep driving in the dark. After about an hour we finally made it yay!!! The house is just as described we just had a hard time finding the 5th bedroom, I kept telling everyone there is a bunk bed somewhere again it is pitch black but Katie left us flashlights so we finally find the bedroom. We rented the main house plus the bottom. The top house is great the 2 other rooms on the bottom feels like a cabin. Everything was neat and layed out just like the pictures. The 5th bedroom where I was staying was way in the bottom it had the bunk beds and well even if I paid for most if the rental was where I had to stay because of my 2 kids. The only suggestion I have it to have some kind of closet it was hard trying to keep it organized with 4 people and 7 days worth of clothes. A TV will also be great. The main house that had the TV was left to the older adults traveling with us because of the stairs and they will often go to bed early and my kids wanted to watch TV. The house had toys for the pool and for the beach, which was great!!! We cooked every night. Another suggestion for people who have never visited the island is bring lots of bug spray as soon as the sun goes down, the bugs come out. The island is gorgeous the house was everything we needed it even had toys for the baby. I would recommend it to any size family.

First visit to St. John

5 of 5
Submitted: May 1, 2012 Stayed: April 2012
Kamabesu is a delightful, welcoming home in the Fish Bay area. Katie met us at the dock and helped us negotiate our first drive over to the house. After a pleasant tour around the place, she let us settle in. The location is quiet and scenic and we especially enjoyed the veranda style screened in porch with a clear blue water view. We made use of the coolers, beach chairs, and water noodles on our daily adventure to beaches including Trunk Bay, Maho (love those turtles), and Hawks Nest. There are many informational books in the bookshelves of the villa and wireless internet is also provided. We didn't really use the nice big screen tv but did use the air conditioning in the bedrooms every night. Ah yes, and we had an evening swim in the pool every night under the stars. Our group was made up of three generations and everyone found it comfortable. The 20 something year old in the group enjoyed his own digs in the lower level beachhouse. We could go "on and on" but suffice it to say, we highly recommend this special villa.

Owner's Response: We so enjoy seeing people who seek out all that St. .John has to offer. Your tenacity for finding natural adventure was inspirational. We even went on a few more hikes ourselves that week! Can't wait for your return.

A private garden oasis on St John

Submitted: April 19, 2011 Stayed: February 2011
After ten glorious early-March days at Kamabesu, we long to return! Kamabesu Villa is wonderfully situated for privacy and tranquility, but is convenient to Cruz Bay’s fine dining and shopping. Kamabesu was the perfect home base for touring St. John’s beaches and sites in our rented Jeep.

Kamabesu’s main house is a beautifully “old style” Caribbean villa, designed for complete relaxation and enjoyment of the remarkable setting overlooking Fish Bay. The villa’s large rooms, with high vaulted wood ceilings, paddle fans, and tiled floors, are naturally light, cool and ventilated to the prevailing sea breezes. We particularly enjoyed dining and relaxing on Kamabesu’s huge screen porch, which more than doubles the villa’s living area. Although independently controlled bedroom air conditioning (and all other modern comforts) are provided at Kamabesu, we never once turned on the AC!

Outside, Kamabesu is a garden oasis, with lush tropical plantings – all chosen and carefully tended by Kamabesu’s owners/managers. Bougainvillea was flowering all over the property while we were there. (Note that plantings have been added and have grown up since the VRBO aerial photo was taken, so the gardens are much more luxuriant than they appear in the photo!) Natural stone pathways and stairways wander through the plantings, connecting the main house to Kamabesu’s relaxing pool area, which is always sunny, breezy, and fragrant, as well as to additional guest rooms in the “Club House”.

Although our small group of four was not using the Club House rooms, I enjoyed a tour. The Club House guest rooms (which are never rented separately from the main house, but may be rented in addition to the main house for larger groups) are true “master suites” - as substantial and comfortable as the bedrooms in the main house - so no one will ever feel “short changed” in this private retreat.

With all of Kamabesu’s many amenities, what is most remarkable about Kamabesu is the personal care taken by the owners and the gracious onsite manager to insure the comfort of guests. Many thanks to the owners for creating Kamabesu Villa and for sharing this wonderful home on VRBO.

Kamabesu, take me away...

We rented Kamabesu with three other couples for the week of Jan 29,2011.Having survived our initial encounter with the roller coaster switchback roads of St. John ("OMG,we're gonna die!!!!!") we were delighted to find Kamabesu to be a great escape from the cold and ice we left behind. The mainhouse and guest house were more lovely than what we ever expected in a rental property! (I plan on stealing some of the decorating ideas in our NJ beach house! ) Simple amenities like beach chairs, coolers and beach towels really made our daily beach excusions so much better! Luxury beds, bedding and towels were the icing on the (coconut) cake!. Katie and her family were very helpful with our needs and questions but not intrusive at all. Their recommendations for out of the way beaches were spot on. If you don't mind a bumpy road at the end, Little Leinster Bay is worth the ride. If you have a jeep it's not a big deal but we had Ford Fusions and it was a little bit of an adventure going over the last bit of "road".(Our bumpers were held together with dry wall screws so we figured it was already in off road conditions...). Also we loved Miss Vie's private beach on the east end of the island. Found quite a bit of sea glass there. We had the beach to ourselves for $2.50 a person and beach chairs were provided which we parked in the water to keep cool. If you run out of beer or food in your cooler, you are steps away from a cold one and hot grilled garlic chicken and conch fritters. Speaking of food, we loved Skinny Legs and Shipwreck Landing for a late lunch on our way home after a fun day at one of St. John's spectacular beaches. Definitely a highlight for all of us! In the evening we discovered that The Banana Deck in Cruz Bay was great for a good steak and live steel drum entertainment in the open air deck. Unfortunately, all eight of us were disappointed in our meal we ate at the Lime Inn. Heard so much about it and our expectations were high but the food was nothing spectacular (my cauliflower soup was so salty as to be unedible and my rare tuna main course was flavorless and dry)and very $$$$.
I would heartily recommend St. John and Kamabesu villa to anyone searching for a little piece of paradise. If Katie and Brian ever feel the need to head back to the states, there are eight of us who are willing to take turns being the caretakers of the house and we'll take great care of Joe the sweetheart dog and Kit the cat, too! Thanks for such a wonderful vacation!

Hi-my family stayed there from 8/3/09-8/10/09 and had a blast. Great location for peace and quiet, yet 5 minutes from everything. The beds are first rate and the screened in porch helps out when the bugs come out. The pool was perfect for my morning coffee and lounge in the pool before the rest of family got up. After a day at one of the spectacular beaches we would come home for our family swim and and a cold one. The villa was well stocked and the caretaker Katie would answer all our island questions for the best recommendations. I would not hesitate a second to rent this villa again. thanks Steve F.
