About Carl Gustafson

Carl and Sandra started visiting Mount Desert Island on an early dating adventure! They enjoyed returning every year with family and then their children. This family of four have hiked most of the island, enjoyed kayaking, trips on the Mary B, shopping at Sherman's, sunrise at Cadillac Mountain and ice cream in Southwest Harbor! A week in Acadia restores your soul.

Carl Gustafson purchased this cabin in 2003

Lovely home on the quietside of MDI

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I visited MDI in June. When we were looking for a place to stay we knew we wanted to stay on the quiet side and stumbled upon this home in Bass Harbor. The home is lovely and well maintained; and Carl was responded in a timely manner to answer any questions. We enjoyed star gazing in the bedroom/loft at night, sitting in the three season room at night, and the jacuzzi after a long day of hiking and biking. We enjoyed going to Southwest Harbor and Thurston's which are closeby and very happy we did not stay close to Bar Harbor (tourist central). Would highly recommend this home if looking to stay on the quietside of the island!

A Quiet Retreat on the Quietside of the Island

  • 5 of 5

A friend of mine came in from Sweden for a week's stay at Serenity. I'm from Maine, and was delighted to play tourist/guide for the week. Serenity offered a quiet place for us to relax each day. It is a bit "off the beaten path" and is a bit of a drive to the park/off island, but it is also a nice retreat.

The jacuzzi tub is wonderful for a soak after a long day of hiking/walking in the park. The gas Jotul stove was wonderful to keep the May evenings warm.

Serenity was clean and well-stocked. The owners were accomodating and kind. Everything you could need for the week is right there.

I'd love to return to Serenity, if I have the need to again. Would strongly recommend for couples or families with older children (there are lots of stairs in the house and the downstairs bedrooms are quite far from the upstairs loft).

The skylights, including one over the bed for night viewing of the stars, let in lots of light. The tall windows gave a great view of the backyard/woods, and we saw many birds and squirrels at play over breakfast.

"Serenity" cabin, the perfect getaway!

  • 4 of 5

My name is Dan and I am a tough customer and a skeptical consumer. I put Carl through the ringer before I committed to renting this cabin and we was very polite, gracious, helpful, and answered all of my questions. He knew that I was new to the rental process and made it very easy for me and was very reasurring. This gave me great confidence leading up to the actual rental of the cabin.

Michelle, my new wife, and I just spent our honeymoon at "Serenity" and we had a very quiet, relaxing, and peaceful time at this cabin. Everything that was advertised on Homeaway and promised through correspondence with Carl was delivered. He was very honest and the cabin had literally everything that we needed, it was beautiful and we both loved it very much. It was very clean and very well maintained. Carl really went out of his way to make sure that we had what we needed. I also feel that the price is very fair.

It is in a great location and very close to many of the attractions that Acadia National Park and Mount Desert Isle have to offer. Bass Harbor itself is very quiet and beautiful in it's own right. We enjoyed Bar Harbor, Southwest Harbor, Park Loop Road, etc., etc. and then we always came back to our quiet little wonderful cabin. It really felt like it belonged to us. We even spent large parts of some of our days just hanging out in "Serenity".

In closing, I would just like to say that if you have never been to this area, you will enjoy it immensely. I would also HIGHLY recommend renting Carl and Sandra's "Serenity" cabin. It was a true pleasure and delight and I am sure that you will love it too! I recommend it for couples, small families, honeymooners, friends, and anyone else that wants to have an awesome vacation experience!

Thanks once again to Carl and Sandra for helping give Michelle and I a great honeymoon and fantastic memories that will last a lifetime. We will certainly look forward to renting it again.

p.s. Michelle and I hiked to the top of Mt. Katahdin during our trip. An experience that we will both never forget!

Owner's Response: Thank you to Dan for the kind review. Being able to host a family, a couple, a collection of friends or a get together a vacation has been one of the primary things that has brought us joy.

"Serenity" on the quiet side of MDI

  • 5 of 5

It has been about 15 yrs. since my last vacation to MDI (excluding pass-throughs to Nova Scotia)

I’d have to rate this vacation as one of the best on record and Serenity helped out. It was definitely nice to come back to a place that was “away from it all”. The house and its location reinforced why we did not want to be in the immediate Bar Harbor vicinity. From our trips during the week it felt to be a bit crowded and chaotic at times. Coming back to Serenity in the evening allowed us to stay in that "got away from it all" mentality.

The pictures definitely do not do this house the proper justice. The house is in good order and kept up extremely well. The owners were a pleasure to deal with prior, during and after our trip. They provided answers to many of our questions while providing their valuable insight and tips (e.g., don't try to go to Thurston’s on the weekend was definite help. We got there on Monday evening just before 5:00p with us being only one of 3 or 4 families there when we arrived….by time we left, the top and bottom porch were nearly full)

Also nice was the skylight above the bed as we could fall asleep with the stars above us each night (managed to see meteor one evening).

The location allowed us to experience some of unexpected things, like eating at Capt’n Nemos (located on the main road to the house). This place is not in any of the guide books but don't let that fact (or the "chaotic-ness" of the place) scare you away. Food service isn’t quick, but that’s okay as it was expected (it is one guy cooking in the open kitchen area). Definitely is a local hangout. However, there were was a cross-section of people in there ranging from locals, retired seniors, what appeared to a well off couple and their 4 children, and us reeking from a day of hiking. Food and service was beyond expectations (try the Dubloons!). I think if you go in with not expecting it to be a 4-star kind of place then you are okay, which is what we could see from some of the people that entered, looked around, and quickly left.

One tip I’d share in order to ensure that the house was plenty comfortable when we got back in the evenings/late afternoons is to make sure the blinds are down (keeps out the run from the HUGE windows) and to have the window fans in the loft and living room window running. We left these running during the evenings to wake up to some very nice "cool" mornings (was 90+ back in Del. when we left and returned from MDI)

Owner's Response: This is a nice rating especially that the comments about the fact that the pictures do not do justice! I like the idea of drawing the shades during the day. The home has several sliders and huge windows in the main room. That is an excellent tip! This nice review provides some of the reasons that people come back to stay with us again! If you have not stayed with us before, call or email now to reserve your vacation!
